no i just wanted to no what i was up against cause lets face it macs are so much better and i knew that all of you would be entering other wise you wouldnt be on here so. long live the mac

I'm working on a co-produced film to enter into this contest.  I'm using PCs and my co-producer, PWC, is using a MAC.  There are some downsides to using Macs for ameteur animation:

- Logitech's pro9000 webcam equivalent for Mac does not allow for manual focus.  I'm guessing in general there are fewer webcam models available for Mac to choose from.
- animation and video editing software for Mac can be expensive while there are many freeware and open-source capture and video editing software available for PC (MonkeyJam, HeliumFrog, VirtualDub to name a few I'm using extensively).

This is my first film using Helium Frog (2.06 beta 3) as my primary capture software, and it is working much better than Animator DV Simple+ with my QC Por9000 (AnDVSimp+ seemed to introduce a good bit of light flicker I think from faulty frame averaging with the Pro9000).  Kudos to Martin Price on this little app and for his relentless support to get the app working on one of my PCs that was having some issues with it.

I did like your seeing your sets. Mine have been a bit hit and miss. I have been taking photo's with a still camera while animating there's too many to post here. If anyone else is interested after the contest I might stick them all in the film thread for "CYCLIC"
I suspect that some people will want to know how I did some of the animation and often the only way to explain it is with some photo's.
As usual I bit off more than I can chew and will be lucky to finish in time.

Okay so I have finished my 10 page script, and I am unlikely to finish it in time.

Its like at least 30 minutes worth of script.

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

I was cleaning up some disk space and found my original (rejected) script brief for my STAR entry so I thought I'd share it.

A pirate’s mum is sick, she lives above the café in the hotel. On her deathbed the pirate returns to visit her. She forces the pirate son to agree to eat more fruit and veg and then she dies.
The gangsters have already been beating up the shop keeper down stairs and the shop keeper’s son throws one of the gangster’s through the window. The gangsters vow revenge.
They put a bomb in a banana and throw it into the fruit bin, during a drive by. This same bin the pirate steals and takes back to his ship.
The ships cook is preparing diner and a monkey steals the bomb filled banana and climbs to the top of the rigging. The cook now furious shoots at the monkey. Every shots misses the monkey but each time another dead parrot lands on the deck. Eventually he hits the monkey and the explosion sinks the ship.

Not a very good match for the theme (Space Time & Reality) which is why I rejected it. Anyway, I wrote a much better script for CYCLIC.

How do you think screams come into existence in the first place? People looking stupid screaming into a little microphone! mini/mrgreen

Try screaming "Oh no! Run from the reaches of the horrid monster!" at your computer a full dozen times on a saturday afternoon when you have three siblings outside the door windering if you're going insane. Simply screaming, my friend, is nothing. mini/lol

I never plan on buying anything when I go to the Lego Store.
Strangely enough, I always wind up finding something that makes me ditch those plans.

On the flip side, it sounds pretty stupid hearing someone do that fake "whisper scream." The actual act of screaming at the computer would be short-lived, so you'll only look stupid for a short while. I think that's a reasonable tradeoff for better credibility to your film.

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

I will real scream I just try to do it when no one is around becouse fake screaming is one of the worst things EVER.  The key is to be far enough away from the microphone not to peak it, but peaking sound is not quite as bad as fake screaming

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

thanks smeagol!

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

thanks i think i will sit there an record my self screaming one day. i agrea that the whisper scream of "oh no the monster ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" is not very good. also REALLY NEED A VOICE ACTOR who can do a really good old mans voice. i know i can ask my grandad or someone but he doesnt sound old. just like a normal person:/

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

If your film does not have all the credits that are really necessary (such as the name of the music used in the film), is it okay to put the rest of the credits in the description next the download link in the e-mail we send to you Smeagol?

Re: BiM 2009: STAR [CLOSED]

If the sounds you're using are allowed to not be credited within the work then yes, that's OK, my guess though is that this would be unusual if there are stipulations for credits on the sounds.  (For example, Incompetech requires you to obtain a non-attribution license if you're doing something like that)  If the creator of the sounds doesn't require credit to be given, neither do I, however music must be credited, and it should be credited in the film if the artist requires this.

I'm noticing that most of the questions here ask whether or not entrants really have to follow particular rules.

As a rule of thumb, YES, you really do have follow ALL of the rules.
