Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

I am so glad that the holidays, and all of the associated trips and family obligations and festivities are over! It seems like if I wasn't gone visiting family I was attending some party or home sick, but all that is done.

I am continuing to finish up the animation for the inside of the ship set, frequently something as seemingly as simple as a camera angle change requires the set to be rebuilt and the lighting to be totally rethought.

Since I already have an excellent establishing shot of the set I needed to remove one side and adjust the lighting accordingly. In this light setup you might notice a thin piece of black wrap dangling down, that is to block the green fill light coming from off camera from hitting the back of the computer console.

This shot was something I just added into the movie because I felt like I needed to fully establish how the guys get on this ship. I ended up having to do three takes to get everything right, and even then there is a bit of set bump at the end of the final take. If the clip does flow well and work in the final movie I will most likely try to fix the bump in After Effects, I've done these sorts of fixes in the past and they are more or less unnoticeable.

Feel free to watch all three takes of the shot, you might notice that the first 3 parts of the video look quite different then the RAW footage at the end. The first clips are just quick JPEG sequences, but the last shot was made from the camera RAW format so I could adjust a bunch of color and light/dark settings. The compression is kind of meh, but I'll spend more time finding the right compression for the final movie.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

I realy like the multi color teleporting.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Thanks, I'd be lying if I claimed to not use a lot of digital effects in this film, but if an effect was really noticeable I wanted to keep them as old school as possible, the Magic Portal gave me the idea for flashing colored bricks

Edit: Update, I was able to finish the last shot in this set today! That makes about 15 seconds worth of animation done today! Now I need to figure out which set to build next. I have been doing most of the animation on this movie blind, so to keep track of the shot I use hand made X-Sheets, this is what they look like:

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

You can't fight in here, this is the war room!

This is shaping up to be one of the best brick films I've seen in production. The simplicity of the set yet your attention to detail within them is just phenomenal, I just hope the script has had the same devotion, but judging by the amount of dedication irradiating off your previous post, I doubt you've hurried any part of the pre-production.

Killed by the husband, drowned by the ocean, shot by his own son, he used the poison in his tea an kissed him goodbye, that's my kind of story, It's no fun 'til someone dies.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Wow, this film looks awesome.  I hope that you finish it.  Also, what is the film about???  Anyway I love the lighting and the way the film looks.  Also you're sets are AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

@Daniel Sitch: I think I spend the better part of a Saturday sitting in a bathrobe drinking coffee while writing the script (it's about six pages long) You shouldn't expect a very nuanced film, but I feel like I am getting better at playing to my strength in my writing, also multiple people laughed out loud while reading the script so I feel like that is a good sign.

@Coolman Films mini/shifty what is it about...

I guess it would be the spiritual successor of 'Attack of the Evil Robotic Turkey from Outer Space' which was the most dismal failure I think I have ever made. Both films are disaster movies, of a sort, Evil Turkey suffered from bad pacing, to much exposition, an unsatisfying climax, and worst of all, not nearly enough footage of the turkey rampaging throughout the city.

Hopefully I'll be able to show more disaster in this film then Evil Turkey (there will be some city destruction from a VERY different 'monster') I also think that the climax resolution should be more entertaining then the cop-out I used in Evil Turkey.

I've been thinking about a name for this film and this week I came up with 'The Interdimensional Police VS the Eldritch Horror From The 11th Dimension' I'm not set on the name, but its the best I've come up with so far

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Ew math. That looks painful. I wish you luck, sir! This is going to be awesome!

Listening to Ween and dreaming in micro scale.

I need a wide shot of a city so I figured I would shoot it in micro scale, I've never really worked at that scale before so it looks like it might be challenging and fun to build a whole skyline.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

That looks sweet! I love what you did with the bottom part, as well as the various tones of grey. I'd love to see some more buildings! Personally though I think it would look nicer if there were some windows in there (transparent bricks perhaps?) and maybe on top of the building a little lighting rod/cone/stick thingie (I forget the name). The smooth flat bricks on the side would maybe also look better if you kept the lengths consistent, like the two left sides. Will you try to replicate a city, or are you just going for a general New York style city look? Finally these quite possibly could be of inspiration (with a different color tone naturally) link 1 and link 2.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

I am going to the LEGO store today go see what pick a brick has to offer, I am going to try and loosely create a space needle free Seattle coastal skyline. The lack of windows and just vertical stripes was loosely inspired by one of the buildings on our skyline, I have built 3 more buildings but I do have some brick based limitations (hopefully pick a brick can fix that)

Edit: While doing some reserch this was the most inspiring thing I found. Something kind of like this is 'sort of' what I want for the skyline.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Oh yes, good old Seattle.  My ant live a bit past Seattle so when I go visit her I have to drive through.  I live in Shelton, which is near Olympia. It would be cool if you did put the space needle in there (or something that looked like it).

I don't really like the Space Needle, plus it's in Queen Ann, and that neighborhood isn't in the skyline from the sound, Seattle people recognize the Colombia tower and the cranes, oh the cranes, there will have to be more of those...

I now have 10 major skyscrapers for my skyline, I'd like to build about 5 more before I start setting up the city's grid and adding the smaller filler buildings, I am having a LOT of fun building in micro scale. I went to the LEGO store yesterday and cleared out there light grey 1x2 grill bricks and picked up some other (not as useful) elements.

Very cool. I used to animate blind and my X-Sheets were nowhere near as nice as yours mini/smile

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Well I have been working on this off and on for the last four years, believe it or not I have got more animation done since the last update and it is actually looking like I will finish this. In about 3 week I will be taking two months off work just to finish the animation for this film. Currently I am working on one of the main scenes which happens to be the biggest set I have ever worked on.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2901/14131442518_38e2dc3d68_z.jpg

This is the establishing shot for this scene, and I dreaded shooting it for years, I finally did an animation marathon a few weeks ago shooting from 8 PM to 5PM with two naps. The shot is composed of about 14 layers (each car is a separate layer) and everything was exposed at 1.6 seconds, that way I could push the cars individually and get a natural blur, they are then added over the minifig layers which were animated normally. Once I started I could not stop shooting because if I left, and the camera shifted at all I would have to redo everything. As you may have noticed the masking is not complete and some layers are blurred over others.

Currently I am working on blasting a hole in the white art deco building which made me realize I would have to build an interior for it, so I am working on the poshest looking office ever, thankfully I won't have to animate details inside it.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Just a question, do you storyboard at all, and in what format (hand drawn/brick stills etc).

I haven't done any story boarding for this project, in the past I have used drawn story  boards for my clay animations. For dialogs scene I don't really find it necessary, I may end up boarding out some of the action sequences but it's hard to do those  before I have an idea what the sets look like. How the sets turn out tends to be a bit different then I imagine as they will be limited by the bricks I have or can get and the limits of my creativity, some kind of things create creative blocks that don't exist for other things I create. I am particularly bad at cars, but since all mine are super blurry I don't think anyone will notice.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

I gotta say that your sets are amazing (not just from this post, but for the whole thing)! And it sounds like you're pretty serious about finishing this, if you're going to be taking time off work. Also, around how long do you think this video will end up being?

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

The script is 6 pages long, and I am expecting 5 - 6:30 minuets.

Also worth noting, this is how the original mico-scale shot turned out with a look at what it actually looked like:

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

That round table & chairs is cool... I've been trying to build a virtual set with that kind of table myself and was never successful.
