Design Flaw

Watch on youtube

This short film (or long-er brickfilm) is based around several themes arising from the novels 1984 and Brave New World. In a perfect world, a mistake is made. How can a such an efficient society deal with such occurrences, and what are the costs of it's own perfection?

This is to date my greatest digital project, and what may be one of my only large brickfilms for a few years to come. While in any other case I would be the last person asking for exposure, I would greatly appreciate anyone and everyone who takes a look, shares it on, and appreciates this film with the mind of a more thoughtful intellectual- if I have done my job right, the film will be "as deep as your mind is willing to go".

My appreciation to the brickfilming community,
~Patrick W. Crawford

BUMP

So, yeah. Some ridiculous number of months later, I finally complete the commentary on this film.
Watch it here to learn more about the themes and ideas of my film, as well as some visual insight into the editing and setup for the entire process! More pictures of behind the scenes are on my facebook page.

Re: Design Flaw

I shall copy and paste my comment from youtube.

Dude this was great!  It was like LEGO 1984.  Now to copy and paste this comment on the BiM thread.

And again I say, I thought it was very well done mini/yes

Re: Design Flaw

Ahh, PdoubleYouC. One of my favorite animators in the brickfilm genre. This film displayed a certain depressing aspect that I always enjoy in brickfilms. The lighting really attributed to that aspect in several shots as well. The ultra widescreen shots are effective in creating an intense moment.

I would've preferred to see more LEGO elements, such as 9:58, I think that LEGO brand flowers would've worked well. But the usage of CGI did not hinder the film in any aspect. The voice acting felt a wee bit scripted, but again it is easy to understand and does not hinder the film.

Thank you for creating such a deep film, it is truly an inspiration for me.

9.8/10

Interesting you say that- When I started this film, I had no cgi capabilities or knowledge so I decided that this film was going to be a challenge on how well I could integrate real-world footage. In the end, it fell through because it would have been a lot of work for something only a little different, but a few places I did stay with the original idea of photography, such as that time point you mentioned. I for example wanted to emulate real tree trunks coming out of the pavement in scenes like along the sidewalk at 2:50. The only thing that was cg in the end was the "deconstructor" firing at 13:55, which I only added in the last day or so because from when I started, I have actually gained quite an appreciation for working with cgi (opposite as I intended, ironically)

Ironic thing with the voice acting (which I certainly do not claim to be effective at), the best actor by far was the Great Designer, which at recording time the mic failed, and hence got the very notable head-set microphone substitute (such a shame…)

I'm ultimately very glad to hear I have in any way "inspired", thank-you for your kind words and comments.

Re: Design Flaw

Wow. That was amazing. mini/bigsmile It was so...uh..there doesn't seem to be a word for it, though I think that meaningful would fit.

Spoiler (click to read)

I like how you showed that they'd been tricked into happiness, and that happiness didn't mean freedom.

Overall, I loved it, though the greenscreening was a bit weird at times. Anyway, great job.

Wow...

That was awesome.

Slightly depressing, but awesome.

Should have had the tagline 'Just another brick in the wall'

For BiMA 2011:

Best Cinematography
Best Screenplay
Viewers Choice

This film is a work of pure genius. Such an original story, with good voice acting and writing make a masterpiece, not to mention the good animation. Even though the effects were not on par at some parts, they were quickly forgotten, as it had such a great story to keep you watching for the next 'thing'.

Overall: 8.5/10

Re: Design Flaw

Wow, I'm speechless. Dare I say this is a brickfilming "classic?"

bricksinmotion member of the year

Re: Design Flaw

It reminded me of Gattaca and Logan's Run.

Animation: smooth and life like.

Effects: well, who cares if the keying is mediocre when it has a great Orwellian story.

Well done.  Indeed a new classic to the brickfilm genre.

Re: Design Flaw

Thank you all so much for your kind words! It really gives me great joy to hear my work being appreciated mini/smile
I'm sure after this point whatever stopmotion I will be doing shalt be in HD, henceforth giving more data to be keyed (that and I now have a very good idea of what does and doesn't work)

I'm honored, though, to be hearing this film considered even if by a few as 'classic'
Eventually, in the next month or so hopefully, I will be uploading either one or two commentaries: one for the production process and technical aspects, and the more important one that dives into all the minute details and specifics of the story that I almost can't imagine everyone would grasp with one or two views.

Re: Design Flaw

Whoa... mini/eek That was impressive.
Hats off to you for making such a long movie, with still smooth animation and frame rate.
As everyone seems to have mentioned so far, the green screen didn't turn out very well. But, it's merely a little design flaw. xD
I would suggest instead of using blue screen for the sky to use some sort of large backdrop. For my films I use a huge canvas painted blue. It work pretty well. Unless you perfect your green screen.
The only other thing I didn't really like was the lack of fun and comedy, and action. Typically I prefer the wacky random adventurous brickfilms. xD However, it's pretty much impossible to keep up a high level of seriousness with fun and comedy, and I still enjoyed it anyway. Though, a fight of some battle near the end would be so cool to have.

Re: Design Flaw

That was amazing! It made mew sad at the end though...almost made me cry. mini/twitch Great movie! It kept me interested throughout the whole thing.

Well, I don't agree with the fun and comedy stuff, and with the action it could have turned out in something else. It's perfect like it is. I wasn't really giving much attention to the effects, the only thing that bothered me a little was the wind on the mic, because I couldn't avoid hearing it. But still. great storyline, amazing animation, I have to say I liked more the first part of this film than the end.
As lechnology says, it does remind me Gattaca and Logan's run. Anyway, very interesting concept, we should have more films like this (I'm a fan of the sci-fi genre). While I was watching, I wished it to last longer, but it would have taken a lot more. 4/5

Re: Design Flaw

…yeah, comedy or high action isn't exactly what I was intending with this film, the aim was to be more intellectually engaging as opposed to more direct excitement.

I've begun to script out my commentary on the deeper meaning of the film/subtle details, though it will be a few days before I've got it uploaded~

EDIT: lol, turned out to be a few months mini/lol

Wow man!  The script was perfect and the story was wonderful.  The animation is perfect!  It must been hard to animate all of those legoman in the same time.  Keep up the insane work!!

Re: Design Flaw

*epicbump*

So yeah, like I added to the original post, I completed my commentary on the themes and ideas behind my last stopmotion film. Sadly, now being in university, I have not been (nor will be anytime soon) able to brickfilm, hence I've been experimenting in other mediums....

Is it jsut my imagination, or is BiM dying down as a forum? I've looked at some recent threads and it's filled with arguments, last year's end of year awards fell through apparently (and I finished the commentary now hoping to get some revival notice for this year's BiMa...), and as for film reviews, it seems nothing has been 'approved' into the film section since well before Design Flaw was release, something like last March. Is there more going on with the community that I've missed, like an anticipated all around switch to another website or something? Just curious.

Anyways, as always I appreciate any response and I'm still very grateful that some people have taken something from my work. Happy animating/etc!

Same here. That was a great way to spend 16 minutes. Great way to help start the new year!
