This is it.  Our BiM 2010: Avant-Garde entry!  Meet two minifigs: one red and one blue.  Each have the "elemental-brick" power of their color.  Their existence serves only one purpose: to battle each other!  Who will win?  EDIT: You can now see the film on Youtube here!

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

Very creative! The animation was good, but there was some points where it struggled a bit. There was some light flicker too. I really enjoyed the end. mini/XD The wink was very good.

I liked it! Nice job, hope to see more from you guys. mini/smile

Watched it. That was pretty nice. Though at some parts the animation struggled a lot. I thought the pacing was a bit slow and there really wasnt like a grabber that really caught you into the fight. All in all I liked it. I lol'd at the ending though 3.5/5

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

Great ending! The animation is a bit choppy, but I enjoyed it!

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

It was pretty good. Although the story suffered a lot from it just being a battle, and to me it didn't feel very Avant-Garde. The animation was quite choppy, but on the whole I enjoyed it. I laughed out loud at the ending! I liked it, but the story was really unoriginal. Overall, a so-so attempt. Good job!

It was great.

I fail to understand. D:

I would like to add that you guys should work on your pacing a bit more. If it was a bit faster, there would have been more tension and made it an even better fight. Maybe render a faster framerate or such.

Oops, haha. I edited my post.

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

I'd have to agree with the pacing. For a battle, there wasn't enough ANGER or FURY. Even if it was a play-fight, there was no JOVIALITY. The bricks needed to move a lot faster to give the fight any sense of being a fight. Still, nicely animated and I liked the robot]!

Thanks for all the helpful critique guys!

The thing that made this film (in our opinion) Avant-Garde was that we were trying a battle technique that had never been used before.  We also tried many Avant-Garde techniques when we were animating it.  For us (and for our animating abilties), it was very Avant-Garde.  Smeagol actually even mentioned in the BiM 2010: Avant-Garde thread that a film didn't need to have new techniques that had never been used before; it just had to have techniques that were not the usual for the animator that created the film.  So in our case, this film focused on Avant-Garde techniques for us.  But on a side note though, just for the point of asking, have you ever seen a battle really similar to this one?

We also agree that the pacing could have been a faster in some cases, but the main reason for the slower-paced attacks was so that you could really see all the unique techniques the characters were using.  No attack was ever used twice for example.  Also, we didn't want the characters to show such emotions as anger and fury.  They both have smiles on their faces the entire battle, and the only emotions that they even hint to portray is anxiety or surprise.  We tried to make them show only limited emotions with only using smiley faces.  (This in itself could be considered Avant-Garde in a way.)  Oh, and we also had a lot of fun designing and using the robot]!

Once again, thanks for all the critique guys!  It really helps us to improve.  Please keep it coming!

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

Wow!  I thought it showed great "joviality."  It was quite light-hearted and entertaining.  I lol-ed frequently - just shows that we all see things differently... mini/smile

I personally liked the fact that the pacing was a little slower, so I didn't have to watch it numerous times to see what was going on.  Perhaps you meant it to be more acrobatic than battle-ish.  I thought it was quite "avante-garde" that you almost exclusively used basic bricks in the battle (which must have been a challenge at times) and that you kept the same faces making the characters appear more Lego/toy-like.  It helped me to focus more on their creative movements, rather than distracting facial expresions.  Your ending too was very original.  Great job, guys!  I think you have a real shot at this!  mini/bigsmile

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

As already said a few times, the animation seemed a little slow at times.  Maybe if it started out slow but then as the battle progressed, the pace could have been increased.  I enjoyed the ending a lot too.  All in all though, I think this was a creative idea.  Nice job on this one.  From the posts I've seen in the Avant-Garde thread, many people failed to even finish their entries.  Good job on sticking with yours mini/bigsmile

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

A really enjoyable Brickfilm, technical qualities were a bit low, but the creative animation and enjoyment rate really makes up for it.
you guys probably had a lot of fun making this film.
Worthy Avant-Garde entry

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

The BuilderBrothers have always struck me as an unusual duo. Their usual work is slightly over par, and they aren't veterans by any means, however their maturity and patience is recognizable and their improvement has shown in this Brickfilm especially.

For a battle film this actually has very few sound-effects and pretty much no effects, yet for some reason it doesn't need them. This film holds it's own strongly, and even though there is no plot, it's originality is striking.

The overall pace is kinda slow, however it still manages to entertain throughout, and for me anyway, there wasn't a second I would have yawned for. Unfortunately this film still has it's down-points, these being the kinda choppy animation and of course the flickers. Another slightly iffy part is the set design. I personally would have preferred a more natural setting, or something, as I'm a big fan of set design.

In any case none of those afore mentioned down-points really dent the overall of the film. It was enjoyable, quirky, and more importantly Avant-Garde! Good work, BuilderBros, you get a nice 81/100!

What I find really Avant-Garde about the makers of this film, is that they're brothers. Usually, if brothers are working on a film, they'll have different ideas on how to do something, they'll argue, and the film will never get finished. Bravo to the two of you.

Not necessarily true. We say this because we're 2 bro's and a friend. And we rarely have different opinions. Well... mini/tongue

Nice film BuilderBrothers! You struck us on that one!

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

I loved it, even though the pacing was a bit slow at times and the music kind of faded out and started again a couple times like a repeating song rather than a whole one. The originality was cool, and the fact that most of the effects were in-camera was cool.

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

Well that was a lot better than I expected it would be. Well done just completing the film. Many others were not able to.
The fighting started out so well with animation benefitting greatly from the medium.

Spoiler (click to read)

Blocks that appear from no where

The pace and even the events of the fight could have been thought out better. There was no real climax.

I would have introduced the robots much later. The use of colour might have been more significant if their hands and faces weren't yellow. Just a thought.

I still enjoyed your film a lot, well played!

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

I, personally, wouldn't say it's Avant Garde, but more creative and well-thought-out.
The battle could have been a little more fast paced, but the pace it is already set at is very effective. The stop-motion was choppy some times and a little slow (just before they go into a run). But the use of Lego itself makes up for most of the technical errors.
A very fun film, with a fantastic end. mini/bigsmile

Nice work, guys!

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

Something else to work on aside from what was mentioned: Consistency in the character's position.

Spoiler (click to read)

Blue emerges from the left side, red emerges from the right.  But as the film progressed, the camera captures them facing different directions.  At least the directions of the attacks are consistent with the characters.

Avant-Garde-worthy?  Well, you don't normally see something like this in a brickfilm.

Nice ending.
