Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

To begin with, I liked the pace you took; if you had gone any faster, then it would have been more difficult to notice the different methods of attack, even if it would have had more tension.  The interesting thing about this film, is that it is centered around a battle, yet the outcome is not the complete focus.  What I noticed just as much, was that you were showing the various ways basic bricks can be used.  From catapults, to castles, to cannons, the two fighters used different ways of combining these to attack each other.

Not to say your animation in other films is that bad, but the animation in this is much better in comparison; any mistakes are very minor, and not as noticeable as they are in your other films.  Your walk and run cycles have greatly improved, and the somersaults were quick and smooth.

The ending was definitely a surprise;

Spoiler (click to read)

both of them turning into a dog for the green minifig.  So neither one wins in the end!

The minimal but tastefully added affects were avant-garde because they were not anything really complicated; just some camera shaking and masking, but that was all that was really needed.

Some of the comments so far point out that it does actually apply to the avant-garde theme; such as creativity and originality (the only other brick battle I saw on youtube was just two minifigs fist-fighting, and throwing bricks already in existence at each other).  Also, as you pointed out, the different techniques used aren't really in many of your other films.  In addition though, you have improved greatly in many aspects of film-making.

Whether they are perfectly executed or not; many aspects of this film are avant-garde.  The problems, however many, are well overcome by the relative improvement and originality in this film.  Even if you aren't successful in the contest, your studio has surpassed itself in many aspects. Well done BuilderBrothers.  5/5

(LegoPinions: I don't claim to be better, but I beat your review in length mini/wink).

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

Well worth the wait. I saw plenty of light flicker, and I saw a few camera bumps, and one set bump. Besides that it was a very well done film. To add there was a little bit of choppy animation 3.5/5.

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

I just watched it again!  There are some pretty impressive entries in this competition, and yours is one of my top five favorites. mini/bigsmile  This is going to be one tough contest to judge!

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

I really enjoyed this entry because of the creativity in it; loved the different weapons each creature used. The the creation conjuration was my favorite move mini/smile . I thought you could have added a couple more sound effects, especially when you had the long brick strands traveling to the opponent. 4/5!

Happy THACing mini/sunnies

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

Epic creativity guys! Only complaints are music choice, and slow animation. Speed it up a bit

I do not care about your opinion, unless it has to do with it needing more ponies.

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

*BUMP*

Sorry to bump this, however I just read the scores given to this film by the review panel. I understand everyone has their own opinion, but I honestly believe this film deserves a higher score. I personally loved this, and only 3 for story? I'd give it a heck of a lot more. Anyway, just my opinion.

Actually, I see your point, but I wouldn't even have given it a three for story- I'd have put "N/A"

I'm back. Possibly.

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

I thought the story has actually great. I mean seriously, Minifigures battling with bricks? That's pretty original.

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

Yah, we were a bit disappointed when we only got a 5 overall (after all, we did get 13th place in the competion and 5th place in presentation), but we understand that this is just the reviewer's opinion of our film.  If he didn't think it was so great, that's fine with us.  At least we got recommended. mini/smile

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

Since I was the reviewer in question, I suppose I should clarify. By my rating scale, 5/10 is fairly average (for accepted films, not brickfilms in general), but I don't mean to say the film itself is fairly average- I meant to express that in the review, but apparently it didn't come off as strongly as I would have liked. I personally really liked this film (as an entry for Avant-Garde it was one of my favorites), but I couldn't really justify giving it above average in most of the categories, because it doesn't meet my standards for such a rating. Nothing as far as technical aspects go was really amazing; what made it stand out for me was that it was a fun film, not that it was a brilliantly made film (and again, that's not to say it was badly made either). In my mind the number system is for technical qualities, whereas the actual written review is for explaining deviations that cannot be classified by the limited number rating. Looking back I might have given a 6 overall, but just as a general rule, consider my written rating if you want to know how much I enjoyed the film, and my number rating if you want to know how well I feel the film was constructed.

EDIT: I've adjusted the overall rating to reflect more of what was written in the review.

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

Ah, I misconceived the review then, sorry. I can see where you're coming from, and the new rating is much more to my liking. I was surprised when I got 5/10 on my second film (Something I was both happy and amazed at) and then they got the same for this, that was what made my state my mind, not a complaint, more of a thought. Thanks anyway, Squash.

Re: BiM 2010: Brick Battle

It's a cool video with sweet animations!
A bit lacking in the scenery, this white wall need not be flat in my opinion.  Also lacking in personality for red, for blue.
