Jeez you guys, this contest was announced like 10 months ago. You guys are LAZY.

It's called having a life mini/smile .

Such a common excuse from people who don't finish things.  Wouldn't a whole 10 months to work with mean you could be more accommodating to things that get in the way in life?  As opposed to what some people are doing now, pulling all nighters and living in their basements to make an entry in the span of a week or two.  That doesn't seem as much like having a life as working a little more slowly during one's free time to finish an entry over a period of 10 months.  Enjoying a hobby and being able to finish ambitious projects with plenty of time provided doesn't mean you can't "have a life," so this is sort remark is insulting.

Both in this contest and in MoB, though, the long amount of time seemed to be a disadvantage because people thought up overly-ambitious concepts and couldn't finish, lost interest over the 10 months, or simply forgot about it.  That's understandable, I fell prey to it in MoB myself, though it's hard to rationalize on paper.  I don't think we'll announce the next contest as early.

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

the reason i got mine out so late was because for most of those months I wasn't really interested in entering because i couldn't decide on a plot.

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

The long lead time with this competition helped a lot. Life does get in the way of hobbies. The theme had me scratching my head for some time. I had to try many things and abandoned a few ideas. The STAR competition barely gave me enough time and as a result I had to rush many things through while making Cyclic. I would rather have too much time than too little.

I hope it gets announced around the same time as last year.  I'm looking forward to participating in the contest.  By the time I thought about entering this years it was too late.  It would definitely be a good idea to announce it before Christmas break so that when school's out, we'll have a chance to work on our entries.  I have to admit that I think of tons of short/long film ideas but after thinking about them for a while, I get tired of it.  Usually once I start animating though, I stick with it.

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

Having Christmas break to work on entries does seem like it'd be a helpful thing for many people here, yeah.  I'm kind of going off of what happened with MoB and (it appears) A-G, though.  Maybe it's more because A-G had a difficult theme than that there was too much time, though.

Yeah, I never got an idea until last month. I took a little too long trying to see if it would be AG or not, though.

I got my idea almost right away! mini/bigsmile

But then procrastinated for almost a year.

That's very true. I would have made an entry if I had found an idea that met the theme.

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

Heh.  To be honest I think the theme didn't need to be as difficult as people made it for themselves.  It was really intended to be a succinct way of saying "think outside the box."

That's the trouble though. So many films have already been made (and I've watched only a fraction of them total) that I don't know if my idea truly is "outside the box" or if something similar has already been done before.

note to the haters I don't have an expensive effects program like everyone else so I use programs that are free or don't cost much

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

A lot of film makers are talking about how thy had a lot of time to make their entry, but I joined two months ago.
I had two weeks to write and produce a film, but it turned out decent, thanks to some help from friends + family. mini/wink
Thanks BiM for this opportunity!

Sorry, my joining of BiM was the beginning of this month...not two months ago. My bad. mini/tongue

Our Avant-Garde entry is 98% done!  All that is left to do is a last minute check-over.  We are VERY excited! mini/bigsmile

I'm sorry, my video quality is just too bad for me to enter. My idea was pretty good, so if I manage to get better hardware sometime I might still make it, just not for this contest.

Nothing stopping you from just thinking outside your own box.
