Re: The CGI Thread

mini/eek  How can you do that and still have the tiniest bit of a life? It's insanely good.

Yeesh, I don't think it's the program, I think it's the fact that it's a large gif (that's apparently not looping) and you uploaded to Brickshelf (not an ideal place for video streaming, let alone large animated gif).  As I've mentioned to others, a lot of crap gets uploaded onto Youtube so I see no reason why you can't upload short 5 second test renderings that you can remove later on.

Anyways, can't really comment on it due to the compression involved to reduce the video down to a animated gif and it doesn't loop so there's no "playback" to speak of.  From what I can tell, it seems your shaders have improved, somewhat.

Hmm...aside from lighting and shaders, what else have you attempted?  /me seems to recall some technological shortcomings in the field of skin prior to Harry Potter and the...what's the one with that Dobby character?

Re: The CGI Thread

If you're not already using subsurface scattering (the Dobby thing Lech's talking about) you probably should, though it won't make a huge difference in a lowlight setting like this.  What it does is simulate light passing through translucent materials, like skin, including the blood vessels inside.  So you give the subsurface scattering a pinkish-reddish color and you get a little of that shining through thin edges like ears and that sort of thing.

For me I think the main issue was the skin has no thickness, if you could at least fake some edges on it that would help I think.

Anyway, nice lighting and composition, it has a nice look to it.  If I were to nitpick a bit, I'd say the telephone booth is a little off because it's got this perfect, smooths surface for the window frames on the door -- there's no way you would actually cut a piece of metal like that, without any seams at the intersections of the bars.

Is the poster based on something?

Re: The CGI Thread

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm using subsurface scattering on the skin, though it's turned down pretty low to prevent the skin from just glowing. I can try messing with the settings more I suppose. The skin thickness is an issue I've considered, but I haven't thought of a really good way to fix it without drastically increasing the number of polygons in the object, however I might just have to do that. You are right about the telephone booth also.

The poster isn't based on anything specific. I did use reference pictures to build many of the models, including the telephone booth and the blimp, but the composition was entirely my idea. I must say I'm quite pleased with how that aspect of it turned out.

Re: The CGI Thread

Well, I just made this in an hour or two of spare time.

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/BGanimations/ninjabganimations/power_core.png

Does anyone know how I could make it look more detailed than it is? Such as adding a certain (complex) shape thing to make it look more complex? It's okay right now, but I think that between the glowing torus and the core it needs a little more detail.

I made this.....

I think it's pretty cool.

EDIT: Wrong thread.

Re: The CGI Thread

Lolwut? That doesn't even look like CGI. It's a picture you took yourself and (drew?) some sparks in. Unless the sparks are CGI (which I doubt) then it's probably not.

He must have either posted in the wrong thread or does not realize the definition of the term "CGI."

Probably the second one. Any critique on mine though?

I'm pretty sure the sparks imagery were made on the computer. mini/tongue

But yes... that is rather effortless to make, IMO.

And BG, that is interesting. Looks like a sci-fi life preserver ring. mini/tongue

Re: The CGI Thread

Wow! You got it on the first guess! But how did you know it was a life preserver? mini/tongue

Here's an updated version:

Re: The CGI Thread

It really reminds me of something from Portal. Others may think differently, as I don't play Portal. I take it that by life preserver you mean, like, well...Iron man?

Re: The CGI Thread

What's Portal? I honestly don't know.

And it's not any regular life preserver. It's an IRON MAN life preserver.

Woah, what? Google doesn't know what Portal is?

Oh nevermind, it does.

Re: The CGI Thread

Seriously, some people seem to need a sign floating in front of them saying "Google it, Fool!" I'm tired of BIM members getting loads of useless questions due to people who doesn't seem to understand the original function of a search engine. Just sayin'.

Sorry, I'm just not used to Googling things like that. My bad.

Re: The CGI Thread

Oh, hello folks.

Here's a little model I'm working on for a live action film project.  It's basically finished, except that all the windows are subject to some change because I'm going to be making interiors that will hopefully integrate into exterior model as well.  So the windows look a bit odd right now, there's nothing proper for them to reflect and nothing inside for them to reveal.
