Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Actually the masking was some of the more painless I've done, took a bit under an hour. The nice thing about the fish is I only have to be precise around the mouths, everything else can be sloppy.

1) are you referring the how they speed up? I wasn't very pleased with that myself
2) A few people pointed out the up and down. I'll have to do something about it
3) I didn't even think of underwater vision effect, that should be easy enough, but I've never managed to make CGI bubbles I was happy with.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

do you use a green screen? (or maybe not green, it could be any other color)

Yes, I was refering to the change in speed.

No, I HATE green screens, I'm using masking. What I do is I take around 5 frames of the shot without the rig in it, Turn those frames into a loop and put that under the layer that has the rig, then I mask out the rig, It tends to look 100 times better then green screening.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Building a hanger for the zeppelin is proving to be a challenge, it more about making the set as large as possible while using as few bricks as possible. Set building can be pretty unfun when that is the sort of mentality you have to use. This is the biggest interior I have ever made, hopefully once it is finished it will look like an interior. It's pretty hard to make a set that has to contain a floating ship that is 17 inches tall and around 20 inches long, I don't think I'll be able to have the zeppelin in full frame in a wide shot which is disappointing but I just don't have the pieces for a larger set.

I am trying to sort of match the style of this previous set, they are part of the same complex.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Man, it's taken forever for me to get this set to the point of animation, but I got it there. After I finished building everything I was messing with the lighting and as I moved a light its cord caught on the set and toppled it over, I was pretty crushed and ended up going to bed.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5176/5520753356_8b5fc1f7f8.jpg

The next day I rebuilt it and spent most of the day setting up the light, I had wondered why I had been planning to shoot the scene with my 35mm lens when it seemed perfect for my super wide 18mm lens, it was a wide shot after all. I switched out lenses and got everything in focus and then added the zeppelin to the shot, once the zeppelin was in the shot I realized that almost none of the zeppelin would be in frame if I used the 18mm lens because it was so close, I had to use the 35mm to get the more of the zeppelin in frame, (there was no way I could get any more in frame by using my 55mm lens because due to space limitations I couldn't get the camera far enough back.

Once everything was in place the lighting looked pretty sweet, ended up getting 10 seconds of animation on the first take which feels like it never happens on this movie.

I have one more shot I need to do in this set, hopefully I can get that done tomorrow, but sometimes on Sundays I am to tired to animate.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Thanks, got about 4 more seconds shot in this set which should be more or less all I need this for. I also did my first animation with cotton, I really like how it looks verses CGI smoke, I will probably be using a lot of 70s & 80s style SFX with my other effect of choice, masking.

I have been looking at LEGO MOCs & vignettes and am just amazed at some of the stuff people are making. It makes my sets seem plain and simple, I particularly love the scenes created by Bart De Dobbelaer his Prometheus series is extremely inspiring. I kind of hope that someday my sets will look half as good as those scenes.

As only have 2 days a week to animate I just want to build the next set and shoot. For the greater part of this movie clutter has been building up as I build the next set and only pull off bricks from the old sets as I need them. So I've ended up with a huge mess and six half built set from this film and a few half built sets from about three older project.

If I took the time after I finished each set to take it apart and put all the pieces back it would be a lot easier for me to find the pieces to make the really big sets. Most of these bins were half empty or almost completly empty when I started tare down today, there are a few more bins in another room as well. I still have half a large Rubbermade bin and two large LEGO brick buckets filled with unsorted bricks, hopefully I'll be able to sort what is left on the work space and resume animation, but I will try to work in a bit of clean up and sorting time between sets.

I also checked up on my progress on the film (I don't really keep track of it apart from how much animation I've done) and I have shot 7 out of 14 sets. Many of the unshot sets have more shots in them then the sets I have shot, however building the sets and figuring out how to light them usually takes longer then the animation for me. A few of the sets will just have some simple dialog which can take more screen time then a establishing shot while also having an easier to build set.

@Cartoonkid98
That's what I was thinking when I was animating it but it didn't quite have that dart away because they got startled look I was hoping for.

I also got 16 seconds animated today, unfortunately it is not the whole shot so I am not adding it to my total for finished animation.

Luma keying is ace.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Amazing stuff here. I love the look of the Zepplin and your lighting is phenomenal. Looking forward to seeing more as this progresses.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

So for the last two weeks I've been moving my filming stuff from my house to a shared artist space downtown, I just finished building a storage table for LEGO so I can easily sort all my unsorted LEGO. I have recently started moving all the LEGO down there. That chest is filled with LEGO, I think I will refrain from hauling stuff that heavy on my bike again, I'll stick to large Rubbermade bins and whatever I can fit in my bag from now on.

You did that effect with luma keying?

Yes, that's what he said. mini/tongue Anyway, I cannot wait 'til this comes out, it's going to be amazing, the sets and lighting are just incredible, how much longer do you think it'll take?

In an ideal world it would be finished this year, but only time will tell.

The keying in the hologram was done with luma key and a few masks (so that his black shirt and eyes were not keyed out) I used this tutorial at Creative Cow for the effect: Creating a Hologram Look in After Effects
