Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

My question as to whether we are going to be getting an official chat or continue using an external source (i.e. Mibbit) has still not been answered.

We've got a big To-Do list, and as far as I know, a new chat is near the bottom (if at all).

We've got a chat that works for the most part, until the rest of the site is finished we need to focus on other things. I can't speak for Smeagol, but if someone wanted to make a chat out of the goodness of their hearts and knew how to to implement it successfully on the site, they can always proposition him about it.

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

Sorry, I didn't see NXT's post.

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

The post-production forum is new.  The categories between some of the forums were pretty blurry, we're kind of trying to find ways to make it more clear what would go where.  Also this new naming scheme is consistent with the (in development) Resources section.  I'm open to feedback on it, but the original forum scheme was basically done on the seat of Schlaeps' pants so to speak.

I'm just glad this forum is still alive and people are actually still working on it unlike some sites that could use a bit more organization. mini/smile

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

Well Sirs and Madams back in the day we were not blessed with such convenience as Coffee Shops mini/tongue

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

I understand that you take all these changes Smeagol, but... why can't we just have fun? I'll remember the coffee corner as FUN, not as ''9 year olds with problem threads''. The love thread was one of the threads that showed another side of a brickfilmer. I'm dissapointed, and I will not be so much on BiM anymore, because the only thing I did was having fun. I don't make great brickfilms, or critisize, or make long reviews.

That's how I think about this, but as you know, I always say what I think mini/tongue

''You don't have to tell him how great is coffee is man!''

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

I see a rather large drop in people coming to this site... possibly including me.

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

My sentiments exactly, Tom. This community is going to lose it's soul, so to speak.

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

Now how do we talk about the World Cup and other things like that. We can't just go into chat and start talking about, because others are already talking about something else.

Smeagol, you always make good, reasonable decisions - this isn't one of them.

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

I understand that discussion in the 'Cafe Corner' can be done in the chat, but I believe there is a difference between 'face-to-face' chat and a topical discussion. Its like when a teacher says you can talk to your friends after school and not in class.....there is a huge difference.

What about the 'Caption Contest'? Can we do THAT in the chat? And what about specific topical discussions like The 'Doctor Who' Thread, the World Cup thread, The Video Game Discussion Topic.....the list goes on.....

If you can develop a chat that can split off into different topics and have some kind of Caption Contest mechanic, fine. But I dont think it is acceptable to replace such a forum with a mibbit chat that can focus on only one discussion (and its mostly half as intelligent as anything in the Coffee Shop) and a chat that we will not be seeing for a long time. If the new chat was up and running, fine, but its not. If the chat was at the top of the 'to do list', fine, but its not. If the chat was mere weeks away from completion, fine......but its not. I'm sorry to keep making comparisons, but its like moving house when the house you are moving to hasn't even had its foundations built yet.

I know you are trying to shift the focus of this site from community back to Brickfilming - the sites original intention.....but by removing the community almost entirely? Thats far too drastic - that's like if all else fails.

But alas, too late. I like how you've given us all a thread to complain in, yet there is nothing anyone can do no matter what we suggest or no matter how annoyed or angry you are. Smart move....

The idea is that you don't, or you do but at least to a lesser extent. This site has been lacking a lot of filmmaking discussion, with much more focus on things that aren't about bricks being in motion. These measures are to help steer everyone back on track.

I would prefer we'd still have the café corner, though.

But this isn't the brickfilming part of the site. We can't just talk about brickfilming - it will get boring. People want to be able to discuss other stuff. Every forum has an off topic discussion thread so people can enjoy talking about something else.

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

With other forums there's often a balance, where people participate in both parts of the discussion, but the main focus remains on the subject of the site. The off-topic part had got out of control and the focus had shifted almost entirely off brickfilming.

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

I get that, but is it really the best option to just remove the other part entirely? If your trying to maintain a balance between the off topic and the topic but the off topic side is heavier, you dont just take it all off the scale....that just makes things worse!!

The site is now more unbalanced than ever. Congratulations!

Can't the Cafe Corner just be placed with "General Film" ?

I was thinking the exact same thing, so we can talk about random movie stuff.

Re: The Closing of "The Coffee Shop"

Its not like we're having off topic discussions in brickfilming threads is it? Why is it off topic if its in the off topic thread anyway? Also, things like the world cup is on at this time of year, so people will be discussing things like that more often. Plus also, its summer, most people are outside enjoying themselves instead of brickfilming. When it starts going back to winter, I'm sure things will even out again. I'm sorry, but this is a really bad decision
