Re: When looking for a new webcam.

Thank you. That's helpful - but only if I know what to adjust it to, which I don't, unfortunately. How can I adjust it to suit my animating needs? I've been told (see above) that I should change it, but I don't know exactly why, thus I don't know how to do it.

Finally, some other people who use the Logitech C910! I've not animated with it yet, but it seems pretty epic. I'd like to ask 2 things: 1. Why do I need to adjust the white balance? And 2. What is a graphics card? To most people that will probably sound incredibly nooby, but I'm not a technology person (though I'm good with watches).
Thanks in advance.

1: White balance needs to be adjusted because if it's not, it can be too much to the left or right making your picture either very red, or very blue tinted..

Most cameras will have it set on auto, and this is very bad, because it means that as soon as something changes (your hand moving the LEGO, shadows etc.) the settings will change to adapt. When your animation is played back there will be "light flicker" making it look like there's a thunderstorm going on.

That's more what I was thinking about. I've taken some test shots and the colour doesn't go off-balance; however, I do have a problem with light flicker.

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

I just ordered a Logitech quickcam pro 9000!!!! So excited!!! mini/bigsmile Is there anything I should know before I use it? I hear the new software isn't that good. mini/confused

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

The only downside to the new software is the somewhat awkward interface. That, and you cannot adjust the white-balance, instead, it is always on auto. That can complicate your trying to avoid light flicker, because the white balence is always changing.

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

I personally ow the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000...AND IT'S AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! GET IT!

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

Hello all!
got inspired by some of the brickfilms I've seen so I've tried some brickfilming using a digital camera (basic minifig manipulation such as walking/running/turning etc.). However it a. is not mine; b. is a bit of a hassle getting it to stay still (so some bumps now and then) and c. I've read that digital cameras are not really made for brickfilming because the shutter wears down pretty quickly. So now I'm looking for a nice starter model webcam.
So I've got some questions:
1. The "native resolution" BertL is referring to is the 'hardware resolution' you see advertised on some of these models, right?
2. I've seen that Monkeyjam will allow you to set the whitebalance on a camera input, does this mean that a webcam does not need to have manual whitebalance because monkeyjam allows you to set it manually? Eg. monkeyjam controls the whitebalance and you do not have to edit every frame you take to set the whitebalance correctly
3. Any suggestions for (relatively cheap) webcam models that will do the job for someone just trying to make some first animations?

Also: I've read some conflicting information on the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000, some say it's just the same as the popular Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000, others think it's worse. Apparantly it comes down to this: the webcam and quickcam are the same device (same hardware) but the webcam gets shipped with newer software that removes some control from the user: no manual white balance but automatic white balance, resulting in light flickering when doing stop motion animation. Is it necessary to get the older software (couldn't find it on the logitech site), or will using Monkeyjam solve this problem (see 2)?

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

I suggest getting the WEBCAM pro 9000 because the software is the same as other Logitech webcams and in my opinion is much easier to use. You can put everything on manual so I suggest buying it.

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

I would suggest getting the Logitech C910 Webcam. It's the updated version of the pro 9000 and has full manual control.

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

I don't think it has manual control over white balance...and he is looking for something that's not expensive.

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

Oh...last time I heard that it doesn't . Guess it does. It's pretty expensive anyway.

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

He thanks for the replies! I'm leaning towards the webcam pro 9000. I don't think I will notice that big a difference in quality, and there's a serious price gap there (2x 9000 =~ 1 910).

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

Ok...hope you like it!

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

About the white balance for the 9000: The software just got updated and the manual white balance is back.

Not literally dead, just no longer interested in Lego or animation.

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

Good, good.

I never had the problem, but good news for others.

I much prefer my C910, but the 9000 should do well for you to.

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

ka-BUMP!!!

Does anybody know if the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 works with Mac or Linux?
And although this software is pretty obscure, does it work with Sam animation?

Re: When looking for a new webcam.

I don't think it will work with Mac or Linux, but i am not sure.
By the way, sweet signature! mini/bigsmile

Oh thanks... I'm not quite satisfied but huh...
Do you know of a good webcam that is mac/linux compatible? Because I don't really feel like dealing with stupid Windows. mini/smile
