Re: The 2009 Bricks in Motion Awards: Potential Nominee List

Yeah, sort of anticipated that but that's why we had a rule against it.  mini/sad

But still this thread should be helpful for getting a broad idea, it's not as though every single film mentioned in here will make the short list.

Though I see potential problems with the idea, I would be open to adding a users' choice best film category, or perhaps to differentiate it have 3-4 users' choice genre categories like "Best Comedy," "Best Action," and "Best Drama."  We could qualify it with the requirement that users have to have registered the year previous to the year of the awards (as in, you have to have registered in 2008 to participate in the 2009 voting) so that it can't be rigged easily.  The problems I see are that many voters would just vote for the best movie they've seen, unlike the judging panel where judges actually are required to watch a long list of films, so we'd probably end up with something of a popularity contest.

I can see the reasoning in that, and I agree...I just wish I had registered last year... mini/sad

If you did that Sméagol would there have to be an exception for this year, as BiM only opened a couple of days before 2009? Or are we counting ILB(if of course this goes ahead)?

Yeah, we would count the old refugeecamp forum as well.  But understand, this is just an idea, I'd be interested in hearing if people like it.  The idea being to have user-voted "Best Comedy," "Best Action," and "Best Drama" categories, noting we have no way of regulating what films the voters have watched.  Or just a user-voted "Best Film" category.  I'm kind of opposed to the idea the more I think about it, though I can see how a user-voted "Best Film" category could add some fun and interactivity to the awards and I'm open to it.

Re: The 2009 Bricks in Motion Awards: Potential Nominee List

If you guys want to put together a People's Choice Awards for Bricks, go ahead.
In the BiM Awards I'm not sure that it would really work well. Like you said, we have no idea what people watched, and having a completely open ballot for people would just result in insanity and long nights for the tabulators.

Edit: Just realized Cyclic was mentioned already.

Hehe yeah it was mentioned but not for music. I brought it up (before and again) because of the review that Leo gave it in BiM films.
My good friend Rob recorded 4 full length songs for Cyclic and even made them available for download.
Apparently music in a film is for the score and only there to enhance the mood, which is a bit 1 dimensional me thinks.

Anyhow a public vote seems like a nice idea. I would imagine BiM's slothy code genious could setup a voting page.
BiM judges would probably need to select the initial choices or it might get a bit swamped with lots of single voted entries.
I would suggest just the one category for the people's choice......best film.

My other suggestions were really directed at the BiM judges. With so many categories related to audio why not have a comedy category?
I know it's extra work, I'm not trying to make it tougher for you all. Plenty of brickfilmers make dam funny films that aren't technically perfect. Or what about best fight scene? These two categories get a lot of films. Much more so than films with excellent Original Scores or Sound Design.

Most brickfilms are comedies.  If one film is an especially good comedy, I think it should be nominated for best film, best ensemble cast, or best screenplay, or all three, not reduced to best comedy because of its genre.  The same would go for action films, which is presumably the genre "best fight scene" would go to.

As far as best sound design and best original scores go, it's usually not that tough to come up with good nominees for original score since we have to limit it to a small group of nominees.  Having these categories in place is intended to encourage people to work on these areas, since music and sound effects are often neglected areas in brickfilming.  (While comedy and fight scenes most definitely are not!)

The Game-Best Cinematography

Re: The 2009 Bricks in Motion Awards: Potential Nominee List

Oh yes The Game! That would also be good in the Best Animation category.

No one had mentioned The Game?! Good LEGO, I thought it had been mentioned already. Yes, The Game should definitely go for Best Animation and Best Cinematography. And maybe one or two others.

Best Screenplay maybe?

Re: The 2009 Bricks in Motion Awards: Potential Nominee List

I dunno. I don't have much experience with the different parts of a brickfilm, so I am not too good of a judge when it comes to things like that.
