Topic: Talking with hands

I got a lot of criticism on this video for overdoing the hand movements. I'm starting to animate next episode in the series and I wanted to get feedback on my new approach. Here's some bits I did last night. Let me know what you think. .mov

Hand movements were great. mini/smile

Re: Talking with hands

Hand movements generally look bad because they're not used how people would in real life. I think you nailed it here - it was very natural.

Re: Talking with hands

I would just slightly move the arms a bit instead.

I'm not sure I get what you're suggesting. mini/confused Are you saying that i should only move tha arms and not have any hand twisting? Or are you saying that my movements are too exaggerated in general?

Re: Talking with hands

As far as timing and the nature of the gestures it looked pretty good to me.  It could always be a little smoother but with the chair moving and such I imagine that is challenging.  This was definitely much better than the original video.

I do agree, though, that arm movements tend to 'feel' a little off because people don't do that in real life.  It can help liven up a conversation, though, and mouth animation is a lot more difficult.

Yeah, I've never been a believer in mouth animation on minifigs (in something like Little Guys, though, I'm all for it). Minifigs are not humans, and while I do want them to act life-like, mouth animations usually push them into the uncanny valley for me. mini/eek

Re: Talking with hands

I once animated a figure who's headpiece (long female hair) restricted head movement, so I had to give her expressions through her hands.
