How does this look? The setting is daylight

Better, but those shadows are still very dark, and the lamp being at 90 degrees to the camera is also a bit off-putting. What you really need is more lights to help balance it out a bit. IIWAM's three-point lighting tutorial was a great suggestion, so try getting your hands on three lamps and setting them up like that.

What do you mean by off-putting?

Re: Critique My Frame!

In the real world, things aren't lit at 90-degree angles, especially outdoors, so if all the light is coming from directly behind/in front of the character, it naturally feels strange. It will also obscure the face of any character who isn't directly facing the light, and will probably wash out the face of any character that is.

That's why angles like this are generally preferred:

Re: Critique My Frame!

Ok. I just got done experimenting with different lighting angles and took a variety of pictures and I still have more I want to try, so I will put out the link and have you guys see how those look.

The astronaut was just to help me get the camera view at eye level, but there are two men chatting in front of a little grocery shop in the daytime.

Mod edit: When posting a new frame for critique, if only a little bit of time has passed, simply edit the post to add your new picture. Thanks!

Re: Critique My Frame!

Nice frames. Very sharp. The high angle is a bit odd, normally movies are filmed at level with the actors.

I do not brickfilm anymore, but you can see my live action stuff here.

Re: Critique My Frame!

It's much better now, although the fact that everyone has two shadows is a little odd. If you put something like tracing paper over your lamp to diffuse its light, it should eliminate that. It's not such a big deal if we're not going to see the floor in the film, though,

And yes, bring the camera right down if you can. When we look down from above, it becomes very obvious that we're looking at little toys, rather than real living characters.

*Sigh*.

If you look down a few posts, it looks like I [hopefully] got the hang of embedding photos,

Trying one more thing that might work:

This is a test I did in preparation for the Lego Batman Movie Contest on Rebrick. There are a few things I'll change for the final product (such as switching in the LEGO Movie Batman), but I was wondering what you guys thought, and what you think needs to change.

Re: Critique My Frame!

I like the star background but I would try dimming the lights down a bit because batman has to much glare on him.

Re: Critique My Frame!

How did you do that star background? I would love to see some behind the scenes photos.

I used a sparkly fabric from here: http://www.fabricsinmotion.net/catalog/ … cts_id=160

There weren't any lamps shining directly on the backdrop, but the glitter picked up enough light from the ones shining on Batman.

And to brickorbrack: The glare was probably caused by my laziness in not putting any diffuser, such as paper, on the lamps...it might be too late at this point, as I've already started filming, but I will try to remedy that in the rest of the shots that are similar to this.

Re: Critique My Frame!

I like the star effect a lot to be honest. Only thing I'd have done differently is use slightly cooler (i.e. more blue) lighting, as it appears it is supposed to be a night shot and nighttime lighting is generally more blue. However, probably too late since you already started filming.

Re: Critique My Frame!

Might want to add some backlight to make Batman pop out more from the background, given that both are black.

Re: Critique My Frame!

To Brickcrazy: Looking back at it, I agree, I was using two incandescent lamps for the test; I have now swapped out one of those lamps for a florescent light for the star shots.
To Lechnology: I should have thought of that...interestingly, when I did the star-backed shots for the video, I inadvertently set up the lamps so there was some sort of backlight effect. If I have any more shots like this, though, I'll make sure I do it on purpose. :P

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions; I'm really grateful for the help.

Re: Critique My Frame!

I've been wanting to experiment with different types of lighting so I tried to make a night time scene in my main character's bedroom, just curious on some thoughts about these shots. Right off the bat I think the window looks weird but I'm not sure how else to make it.

Re: Critique My Frame!

I think that the lighting itself is really nice.  It really gives that early morning twilight vibe.  However, the set design could use some work.  Perhaps make the be more smooth looking, and maybe cover up the floor with some plates so that it doesn't look like grass.

Thanks for the feedback, I agree with the set design comment that is something I definitely need to work on. I should probably start by getting more base plates so I won't just have green haha.

Hey everyone! I'm going back home pretty soon and I wanted to start to animating one of the Marvel Anthology episodes. I tested out some lighting and framing and wanted to see what you guys think could use some improvement. Thanks mini/smile
