Topic: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

This is mainly for episode 3,but will cover tying up episode 2,and touch on episode 4 & beyond.

I began working on the special features for the "Holding Our Own: The Complete Second Episode" DVD, including subtitling the episode and preparing the commentary track.  I also have made substantial progress designing the DVD cover.  The front and spine are already completed and I'm working on the back.  The content of the lore text is similar to that in the commercial, which will be included as one of the many special features.  I've also made a 20 song episode 2 "official soundtrack", which I can't "officially" sell, because only four of the songs are my own.  Casting will eventually resume for episode 3, and included are potentially some real exciting casting choices for parts already.  I have reserved the part of the cellmate for myself, but among roles still open are:

Bill Maher
Ann Coulter (actually, I'm already looking at people to fill her role)
Male Police Officer
Man In Line (at supermarket)
Small Store Owner
Son

This will be the largest cast so far.  The script for episode 4 is long completed and has an even larger cast, including all of Melissa's six friends gathered together at once!  I also recorded an original song that the girls will be singing in episode 4.  Meanwhile, Episode 5 scripting is still in progress, with a complete outline and some scripting completed.  I'm also getting ready to build four virtual models for the third episode.  For now, I'm compiling a list of parts I don't have but will require to build the models.  It will be quite a few pieces, but less than I hoped.  The main thing is finding a lot of beige pieces, which is important for building the church.  The church attended by the Schneiders now has an official name: St. Hilarius.  Yes, that's a real registered saint.  He was also a pope in the 5th Century.  Already I've been to the Lego store and collected a lot of beige in two free fill-up boxes for their Christmas promotion.  But my wife,  Angela, wants to build a set for her own brickfilm and the living room is beige (tan is the color's official name according to TLG).  The other brick-consuming problem is that I need to build exterior models as well, for establishing shots.  But as far as interiors go, I think the police station is the most impressive.  Models can be seen on my tumblr page:

http://holding-our-own.tumblr.com

I'm also going to post concept art of models that didn't make it into episode 2 (or was rejected for episode 3).  Keep an eye out!

Mary Charles (known on BiM as Brick7) is recording or has recorded her lines for episode 3, and will almost certainly play a second, supporting character.

I hope that everyone got to see episode 2, and I hope that you all enjoyed it.

PS: Has anyone seen General Ned?  A few weeks ago he was asking for the script to the second episode of a crime drama I'm writing for him.  That night I finished it and sent it off to him the next day.  I haven't heard from him since the day he asked.

As for scripting, I've also been in the middle of writing Robert Sheckley's short sci-fi story from the 1950s, "Warm", into a script for a brickfilm.  Anyone's welcome to use it when it's done.  It should be visually interesting, and is open to some abstract, free-form, and conceptual modeling for someone who wants to get experimental with the bricks. I adapt these stories to make them buildable.  For instance, in "Warm", the main character is tying his shoes in the original story.  I change it to something that is more practical to animate with bricks, but still stays true to the original's vision.  I actually have a few sci-fi scripts ready for anyone who loves to animate/direct the films but isn't much for writing the stories.  (One of them, "Marianna", is found in its entirety in the pre-production forum.)  PM me if interested!

If you need actors, I'll lend my voice for a character. Here is a list of films I have voiced in so far:

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

Who is the voice of the police officer?.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

Yes! I am so glad you are sticking with this thing. If you need a voice actor or something feel free to ask me too, I'd be honoured to work with this project.
Also it's so cool that all your family is getting into brickfilming mini/cat

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

I have a list of parts available for episode 3, and I will be reposting, but my life has been very busy lately and I have to get a few things in order (and finish the DVD) before I continue on episode 3.  There is one other thing I've been working on, and that's an original song for episode 4.  Ep 4 will have 2 original songs, not including Johnny Strange's song-of-the-episode.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

I just put down some basic tracks for one of the two songs for episode 4.  Today I'm recording the lines for episode 3 for Brent and a few other characters.  I've also started gathering parts to build some of the models that will appear in episode 3.

I also just updated my Tumblr page to feature six early virtual models from episodes 2 and 3 that were rejected.  You can check them at

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

Episode 3 set construction is underway.  I'm gathering bricks to build the police station, one of 3 new interior sets that will appear in episode 3.  It's actually the last of the three to appear chronologcally in the episode, but I knew I had most of the parts already.  For each new set I build, I gather the pieces I'll need into a small plastic sterlite box.  I actually did well; after gathering them together last night, I found I had 300 of the 335 required bricks, nearly 90 percent.  I'll post models on my tumblr page once it's completed, but until then, you'll soon find five virtual images of it, made in Lego Digital Designer:

http://holding-our-own.tumblr.com

So far, I've only bought a few pieces I don't have on bricklink.com, mainly the holding cell bars, and a few other parts for the church set, one of two other sets for episode 3.  (The other is a supermarket.)  So my budget for  expenses for episode 3 has been $5.77 so far.

Some of the ensemble cast's voice work has been done and will be processed shortly.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

I just scripted the first episode of the spin-off.  This show only features Brent Schneider and Steven Weh, a character I developed a long time ago who will first appear in episode 5 of the reguler series.  Again, it is of a wholly different nature and it will take place in an unused conference room at Brent's place of employment.

Dude I got the DVD!

thanks so much! I can't wait to watch those bonus features and stuff! Gotta say though, I love the cover design. It is pretty darn amazing.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

Awesome!  The cover for episode 2 is complete and will be up on tumblr sometime soon.  The ep 1 cover you have is a parody of a promotional photo from "The Brady Bunch".  I think it's also a cover of one of their DVDs.  The image is so iconic that I can't imagine it not.  Nor can there not be at least one season with the 3x3 blue grid.  I just scripted the first episode of the spin-off and will probably record on Thursday.  I also have the live-action materials nearly ready.  The spin-off features a second character, Steven, who is one of Brent's employees.  In the regular series, he's first going to appear in episode 5, which is about half-scripted.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

Much of the voicing for the core cast is complete and now being processed.  I also recorded the vocals for the spinoff, and collected the needed live action footage.  Building a set and animating are next.  Also, I'm building the church for episode 3.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

Gathering the materials to build the church interior for episode 3.  Fortunately, not many specialty pieces are needed for this one, but I do need more beige.  I'll be posting virtual pix soon, and some real photos of the nearly-complete police set.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

Still preparing to build the church (the third of 4 new sets for episode 3, the Acme Market is the fourth.)  While I'm doing that, I went back to work on the script to episode 5. It's about 1/3 complete.  I have an episode 6 idea and a working title but no outline yet.  That will conclude the first season.  Six episodes per season was good enough for Max Headroom (1986),so it's good enough for me.  If I go beyond the first season, I already have ideas for stories.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

I'm heavily in my busy season at work, I'm going to complete the episode 2 DVD, and write a commercial promoting the DVD which I will post on Youtube and include as a special feature on the ep 3 DVD.  I will try to build the set for the spin-off.  I'm also writing episode 5 and spending some casual time reconstructing the space lock-up isolation base from the original Space Police series (Set # 6955, 1989).  You can see that at the link below:

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

Hey!
I've completed the set for the Spin Off to Holding Our Own.  Part of the set can be seen on my Tumblr page, where I asked all of you to vote for your preferred color of Brent's hair.  If you haven't seen this in the pre-production thread and voted, please visit

http://holding-our-own.tumblr.com

and email me your preference.

Next week, I'll be posting more detailed pictures of the set, plus some other things I've been working on.  I've re-worked the Mom & Pop set for episode 3 a bit, and added some scenery.  Shelving and products are next.  I also made a most unusual Lego minifigure who will be in the series.  More on that later.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

MEDIUM-LEVEL CRISIS

My laptop crashed, and I don't know if my files are intact.  Odds are that they are, but the odds never seem to turn out in my favor.  The worst that happens is that I have to re-process all the audio, which isn't too major.  All audio I have backed up somewhere, so no one has to re record anything.  But summer is the worst time for this, as it's anturally a time where I have no free time, and I have other, bigger troubles to worry about.  If someone has a Windows XP system file, they may be able to help me by emailing it to me... from there I can figure a way to downlaod it and install it from there.  Anyway, I'll be re-doing audio for episode 3 and spinoff episode 1.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

Wow, that's a tough break mini/sad
I can't even begin to imagine how I would feel if my computer crashed in middle of making a Joe Brickmond episode. I hope things work out in the end.

Re: Holding Our Own Ep3 Production Log: MY FINAL THREAD POST

Fortunately, I back things up regularly.  But it's still a setback.
