Topic: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

Hey, everyone.  I'm working away feverishly on Holding Our Own: Episode 2, and have been keeping meticulous digital records of the progress.  I'd love it if you visit my tumblr page and check out the latest behind-the-scenes images.  Among other things, I've just posted a map of the town of Bremen, so you can see where Brent, Angie, and Melissa live.  There are also some new stills from the episode in production, and near-complete models of Melissa's school along with virtual models.  Here's the url:

http://holding-our-own.tumblr.com/

Of course, I prefer the archive page myself, because I get to see all my pictures "tumbl":

Let me know what you think!  I love to hear your opinions.

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

It's good to see someone putting that much effort into a film.
I myself would never think about which way a car should be driving relative to the school, but it will certainly add a bit of realism. Have you thought about which state it is in? That may help people identify better with the city.

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

I'm sorry that I haven't been keeping up with things, but what is Holding Our Own? I unfortunately have not watched episode 1 so I don't know what you are trying to achieve with the series. Yeah, I should really watch this. Also, the tumblr looks great! So much detail! mini/cat

Hey!  I decided to put Bremen in an non-specific, but mid-Atlantic state.  In fact, when I send out copies of the DVD, including the one you won, I write this return address: Brent Schneider - 311 Asbury Ave, Bremen 0XX30.

Holding Our Own is the name of my Lego series.  It's in the style of a domestic sitcom.  The first episode is up on YouTube, and the second one is well into production.  I hope even to say soon, "nearing completion".  I'd love you to watch episode 1 at:

Are there any suggestions to make either page better?

You're putting a fake return address on the packages?

Yeah, I do!  I've actually worked in the postal system once.  It's not illegal, and the post office doesn't mind, as long as the package can be delivered to the right address.  I'm sure to write the correct address clearly and transcribe it correctly.

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

Update: Melissa has six friends who will become semi-regular characters.  I finally got the pieces to build Friend #4, and the whole crew is finally together for their first reference photos.  The latest pictures are on my Tumblr page

http://holding-our-own.tumblr.com

They'll all appear together in episode 4, but Melissa's two closest friends will soon be on the screen in episode 2.
There's also a photo of Melissa's Bedroom, still being constructed.  It will also be a scene for episode 4.

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

UPDATE: Filming a nice scene with Melissa and her friends.  It's a lot of work, and there is a lot of movement in this scene, so I'm getting it done little by little.  AnimeNinja, the BiM user who provides Melissa's voice did an awesome job, and the audio is nearly in its finished form, which I'm animating to.  Hopefully, in a few weeks you will see the release of episode 2.  I'm going to try to get some images up on the tumblr page:

http://holding-our-own.tumblr.com or
http://holding-our-own.tumblr.com/archive

And I may even post a short video clip on YouTube featuring some animation I rejected.  Keep an eye out for any further developments.

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

Yes!  Animation is 82% complete.  After the scene I'm working on is finished, there are only two scenes that follow and it's finished.  The scene, a school scene, that I'm shooting now, has a lot of retakes in it, and thus a lot of discarded footage.  You can see some of the rejected footage in a short film at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxk7Fr72Rpg

It gives you an idea of what the scene will look like.  I really love it.  It's the first time Melissa is interacting with a group of her peers, and I love the way the dialogue has turned out.

I'm going to start casing episode 3, though it's a few weeks away before I start accepting anyone.  You can read more about the available roles in AUDIO.

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

So mint!  Animation is 85% complete!  Only two scenes, about 3 minutes left of a 22 minute brickfilm!  I built a new convertible fo Hector, different & better (imo) than the one I originally made and is seen on the tumblr page:

http://holding-our-own.tumblr.com

Just shot the stills, but haven't aniamted it yet.  I always animate in 3 steps:

1) shoot photos
2) Rename photo filenames and label keyframes
3) Animate in Vegas Studio.

The final two scenes are set to be filmed, and afterwards, a few touch ups and a bit more audio editing (mostly done since I always do the sound work along the way), and episode 2 is ready to be seen by the world!  Mary Charles (brick7), animeNinja, Brandon Fields (DarthVincentPrice) and I all reprise our roles, and they all did a stellar job with the vocal work.  They ae the greatest ensemble cast in brickfilming, even with me dragging them down!

Also, as a side note, suddenly the number of subscribers on Holding Our own's channel on YouTube doubled, jumping from 16 to 31 overnight!  I don't know how that happened, but I've been making some business cards & circulating them at Wawas, the local LegoPalooza event, and a nearby Chick FilA, 45 mins away) and the nearest Lego store (nearly 2 hrs away).  Maybe I'll save up some $$$ and stick an ad in BrickJournal if it turns out that I've made some success because of some promoting.

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

Animation 86% complete.  I just completed a pleasantly-animated cut of Hector driving his cool convertible.  I'l have some reference shots taken and posted on tumblr sometime soon.  A lot of audio is crammed into a samllspace here, with music, sFX, laughter, voices, and some real dynamic animation.  When episode 2 is posted very shortly, please give the car segments a second look!

Congrats on getting more subscribers! mini/smile  I am really looking forward to episode two!

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

So am I!  Segment 1 of 4 is completely done and 2 is almost ready, too.  I just have a 1 1/2 minute scene left for segment 3 and the 1 1/2 min. scene for segment 4.  But I don't want to post until I make a commercial for episode 2, first, and I wish to include some animation from the scene I'm about to animate.  I did no namiation yesterday, but did work on some of the audio.  I mixed your work (Brick 7) with some voice work of my own for the radio blurbs.  I also did a 20-second audio tapestry where a character is tuning a radio.  There are, I think, 6 songs (And a lot of radio noise) in the sound piece, and I might post up the sound with a contest, to see who can name all the songs!   Or as many as possible.  Winner gets a Holding Our Own Episode 1 DVD.  Runner up gets TWO Holding Our Own Episode 1 DVDs.

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

Sounds like fun!  Remember that if those last two lines I did for you sounded too much like Angie and you want more variety, let me know.  I'm worried that I didn't do my best because I was still a bit sick.

By the way, you don't drag us down.  You have the perfect "Brent" voice! mini/bigsmile

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

That's not my real voice, by the way!  The voice I "do" is actually my impersonation, more of a charicture than an impersonation, of my father.  I mention this in the commentary track to episode 1 on the Episode 1 DVD.  Anyway, two of your "Awesome Angie" voices were mixed with a few of my voices for a "Chorus" and it has the sound I'm looking for.  And I pitch-shifted and put a few effects on "ValSpeak Word Of the Day", so it's not as "Angie" and more radio sounding.  The audio has come up nicely.  I'm looking forward to finishing up the film & sharing it with everyone!

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

AAAAHHH!!!!!!  No progress at all!

First, my son loses the microphone part from my set (he usually pulls off the ceiling, which is easier to find!)

So then I get the mic head plate and put it aside in a place where I can easily spot it when I find a replacement for the main microphone part.

Unsuccessful, I put the contents of the bucket that should have had the part away, go to get the other piece I put aside, and it's like, GONE!

So back to square 1, I get that piece replaced again, go searching a tub of random lego bricks that used to have a bunch of them, and now had NONE!!!!

So, I go into my closet of sorted bricks to find just that part.  SUDDENLY I HAVE NONE !!!! IS THERE A MAGIC PORTAL THAT SUCKED THEM ALL AWAY?

I try to pull out one more box that may have this blasted part, and

LEGOLANCHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm really mad now and there are 6x10 plates and 1x8 bricks all over, and the Heartlake Pool set is busted, and I still don't have the part.

So I go into my final box of random pieces and THERE IS ACTUALLY ONLY ONE THERE!  And it's miscolored.  SO I have to bleach it to see if I can get the color to look like the lost piece did.  Very c a r e f u l l y....

Now it's 40 minutes later, and I finally have the TWO PIECES that caused all this trouble back together again & then I have to go to work.

Maybe tomorrow will be better.

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

I didn't know you had a kid. And here I was thinking that you were another teenager. mini/lol

Yeah, I know the feeling. (Except I don't have anybody else to blame for loosing the part. mini/tongue)
And yes, there is a Magic Portal. When you're not looking for a part, there are hundreds of them, when you are looking for it, none of them can be found. Having everything sorted would help a lot.

But I'm glad to hear that it all worked out in the end. (For the most part.)

Re: Holding Our Own episode 2 production log- UPDATE

I bet it got sucked into the same void where the missing socks go... or did you check the bottom of your foot?  I think there is a magnetic attraction between Legos and the bottom of feet.

All kidding aside, I'm sorry that you had to go through that.  We have done that here a few times - dumping tubs of bricks onto blankets to find that piece that we know we have a dozen of.  My daughter was in the habit of stealing the girl minifigures, then just their hair, for a while.  It drove my boys crazy until I got her some girls of her own to lose.  That was very clever of you to bleach the piece, and I'm glad it worked!  I am truly impressed that between family and work you have any time to film at all.  mini/smile

me too!

The thing that made the incident so m uch worse is that I have bricks sorted, for the most part, by brick type, and I KNEW exactly where about 6 to 8 of these pieces should have been, and weren't.  Weirded is that that was in a Gerber container in a sealed storage container of Gerber containers, so it shouldn't be anywhere else!

Well, today is much better; I animted about 6 seconds, and will be reusing a bit of footage, so I should have a good 20 to 25 seconds of new animation done by tomorrow!

---UPDATE---

I've also added a lot of updated photos and information on my tumblr page, including a redesigned car for Hector, some background scenery, and a few models for episode 3!  Check it out & let me know your opinions
