So you're saying that the only reason that we would get a brickfilm removed is if Lego dissagrees with the content?
And that they already have this power (but they rarely use it), and the bill would just let people know the consequences?

That's good to know.

(I'm surprised KinzCove hasn't been taken to court yet.)

I kind of went off on a tangent there (when I said content I actually meant the owners of a copyrighted material suing you, as opposed to violence or nudity leading to a lawsuit from LEGO- I should have been more clear); this particular bill doesn't really apply to the use of LEGO within a brickfilm, but it is true that LEGO has that power and has been known to use it. I hate to reference it again, but the most significant time I can recall LEGO pushing a lawsuit over a brickfilm would be when they sued Rick and Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World while it was still being filmed with LEGO. It was also getting pretty significant critical attention though and was primed to become a cable television show, so I'm sure that factored somewhat into their estimation of how much damage it could do. Whether LEGO would actually succeed in a lawsuit is questionable, but for most of the people here that's irrelevant; no one is willing to go to court over a LEGO movie.

What's stupid is that we even have to worry about little things like that. The U.S government has much better things to do than toss Brickfilmers and Machinimators in jail.

Fair use. No one's going to prison for Machinimation.

People shouldn't have sympathy for the rights holders. Once upon a time you would write a book or a piece of music and the copyright would only last a few years. Then after that time was up the work became public domain. Now it seems like the companies are getting closer and closer to permanent ownership. They are playing the system to get more money they don't deserve. Not to mention that it effects creativity. Gets even worse when you look at patent laws. Microsoft makes more money off Android because of some bs they patented then they make off their own mobile platform. The way I see it you can't own an idea. It's morally wrong. It's anti-capitalism. No one should have the right to own something just because they created/invented it, indefinitely. However protecting trademarks within reason is fair.

Re: USA To pass bill to make video streaming illegal

What I've been trying to say is: If this bill passes, we'll still be able to make brickfilms. Some people are worried that they won't be able to, but that's not going to happen. I just want to get that straight.

Not literally dead, just no longer interested in Lego or animation.

Re: USA To pass bill to make video streaming illegal

Yes, that is correct. The bill has no real bearing on brickfilms unless they use copyrighted content without permission.

Except he lives in Norway which would make it his second language. Assuming he's I dunno 13, that hardly makes him an idiot.

Unless you like get the permission from the artist, I assume.

Re: USA To pass bill to make video streaming illegal

Google has some deal with the record labels to give them revenue for content they own. If you find a music video on youtube of any big artist you will probably see that it has adverts and a "download song on iTunes" link. Doesn't take a genius to work out why music videos are beneficial to the label, Google and Apple.
The record labels only want to clamp down on places they don't make money.

Re: USA To pass bill to make video streaming illegal

Should this site black out for that day too? Just a suggestion.

Re: USA To pass bill to make video streaming illegal

That wouldn't be much of a protest. We have 6000 users and probably half of them are spambots that wouldn't care. just saying, that would just be an inconvenience to the ponies who oppose the bill, and not very many of them at that. I don't think that would work. I just think it's so cool that "The Encyclopedia anypony can edit" is finally taking action for the public.

Most of the users are either spambots or inactive users, but it wouldf affect those who don't fall into this category.
The blackout will change lives, let's hope we will survive tomorrow.

Re: USA To pass bill to make video streaming illegal

For anyone living in the United States, contact your district representative (e.g. Niki Tsongas - D, Massachusetts 5th District [my district]), and both of your Senators (e.g. John Kerry and Scott Brown) and tell them to vote against these bills.
For anyone outside the United States, contact the Speaker of the House (John Boehner - R, Ohio 8th District), as well as the Party leaders in both Houses (Eric Cantor - R, Virginia 7th District, House Maj. Leader; Nancy Pelosi - D, California 8th District, House Min. Leader; Harry Reid - D, Nevada, Senate Maj. Leader; Mitch McConnell - R, Kentucky, Senate Min. Leader.), and tell them to vote against these bills, and explain how these bills would affect you and your ability to use the Internet, despite living outside the United States.

Please, the Internet needs YOUR help. YOU are its only hope.

ON TOPIC: Last year (2011) over 2,000 bills we're submited into congress. 1,100 of them were passed, so about half were passed last year. The statistics for 2008 numbered 8,000 bills submited, so there's no telling how many bills will be submitted and passed each year.

I'm working on getting my studio back up and running, so stay posted...

Re: USA To pass bill to make video streaming illegal

I just hope the people in congress will have their heads screwed on the right way when it comes to deciding whether the bill will be passed or not.

You can do anything, just have fun while doing it.
