Topic: Q&A Topic

Since the closing Community forum was closed, people can't really go into the Café Corner and ask sort of minor questions such as how to stop light flicker and how to do something with a certain software, kind of like questions that they'd like to know but by posting them in the Café Corner they will stop the posting of topics that have already been posted a gazillion times and they will probably have more people pay attention to they're question if it's on a large topic that pretty much everybody trolls reads. Sooooooo...
I thought this topic could be for like if you have a question that doesn't merit it's own topic, you ask it here and (hopefully) someone will answer it.

Also, whenever I have a minor question about something brickfilmy, like how to prevent light flicker or how to do something in GIMP, I ask it in the Cafe Corner, so not to spam other forums with topics that have been made a million hundred times.

Why not start up a 'Minor Questions' thread in the Production forum? That way, even if you can't find the answer to your question though search, you can still ask it.

Glad this topic is here. mini/smile

Anyway, does anyone have some ideas for unusual lighting methods?
As in something different that just the usual shining some lamps on your set.
I've found it's nice to experiment with other stuff at times to try and find some other cool stuff. Like using a coil of string lights.

Any ideas?

Re: Q&A Topic

Well in my upcoming film I did this
http://i52.tinypic.com/x55unc.jpg
by turning out every source of light in my room and getting a lamp and putting it way to one side, like a sunset/sunrise. So the shadows are long and the light has that coloring to it. I believe I also put my camera on a setting to give it the warm sunlight feel. I can't really remember though.

Also, you can twist a paper into a cone and stick it in a hole in some cardboard or legos and then the light will shine thorough the cone only and it will look like rays of light. I think I saw that in 'BrickJournal' in reference to Zach Macias' Treasure Hunter.

Re: Q&A Topic

Well, there's always the option of a (very loose) removable roof if your set isn't very big.

Re: Q&A Topic

Topit, could you give me a pic of your setup...the one with the sunset. With the position of the lights and everything?

Re: Q&A Topic

Uh... I already destroyed that set because we were done with the scene... But I quickly set it up with a diferent set

It's actually really simple: You just have one light way low down and to one side, which creates long shadows. But where the coloring in the movie screenshot came from... My camera (I have a digital photo camera instead of a webcam) was on Florescent setting and that caused it to look orange-ish. If you don't have that you could put a filter over the light (which would probably look a lot better) or you could try to adjust the white balance of the picture. It's not much.

why was community closed?

Re: Q&A Topic

Read about it here. Let's try to keep the discussion here brickfilming related. mini/smile

Re: Q&A Topic

We put a red piece of paper over one lamp for a shot in another film.

Re: Q&A Topic

I find putting various textured pieces of LEGO above your set, under the lamp, can create all sorts of interesting shadows.

Re: Q&A Topic

Here, I have a question. I made a topic of it but nobody paid attention to it... mini/sad

Hey. I have a Mac os x 10.5.8 and when I downloaded gimp it worked for a few days but now when ever I click on the icon thingy the following two messages appear: http://i55.tinypic.com/2isjk76.png
why does this happen and what in the world is dbus-launch anyway? please help!

It started working again but oddly enough whenever I open Finder it displays the message that GIMP quit unexpectedly, even though it wasn't even open at the time. And stranger still: When GIMP is actually opened and I click on Finder, it still displays the message, but GIMP remains open! What's going on?
It's not like it's that important, it just gets annoying so I was wondering if any Mac users had this problem...

Re: Q&A Topic

I have never had that problem, try deleting it and them re-installing.

Re: Q&A Topic

Does anyone know how to do in-shot lightning? Like, not when you actually see the bolt, but when the light reflects off people's faces. Like when people say something dramatic and lightning then strikes.

Flashlight. mini/smile

For that effect, try a LED.

I recommend going to the store and buying random things that light up, you never know what you might find. ^.^

Re: Q&A Topic

Hehe, thanks. I might turn the lamp off then shine the torch on the minifig's face for the 1/2 frames.

Does anyone know of or have a good wave cycle? I just can't figure out how to get that to look right.

Re: Q&A Topic

As I recall, the movie Jericho: The Promise Fulfilled used blue sand to make the river Jordan. The waves in that look pretty good. Try getting a YouTube downloader and watching videos with wave cycles frame-by-frame. That's what I do when I need to figure out how to animate something.

Re: Q&A Topic

I have a question...I'm not as creative as I used to be at building lego stuff. Anyone know what I could do to help myself?
