Well, come to think of it, maybe this perspective of Sayid getting caught and captured in order to get Ben to release him and take him back to the Others was what Season 2 Ben used to manipulate the Oceanic Survivors and force Michael so sell out his friends.
Wow, just saw the latest episode, I probably should have seen that coming given Sayid's hatred for Ben but it was still pretty shocking. I think it seems pretty clear they're capable of changing history on some level, but then they did explain in a previous episode that time "course-corrects" so as to compensate for deviations from the plan. Perhaps someone will fill Ben's role now that he cannot?
Another curiosity: is the Dharma genocide already happening? In the original timeline, Ben killed his father as an adult, but in this episode he says "I really hated him." Did the incident with Sayid incite Ben to kill him earlier?

-Well that answers the What Sawyer-whispered-to-Kate mystery.

-Well, finally, a flashback.
-Hehe, kids like to ring doorbells.
-Oh pish-posh, if it's Satan's child, I'd kill it.
-Uh oh...so that's what changed Ben to an Other.
-So Charles Widmore and Eloise Hawking are still in charge back in the 1970s.
-The Temple! Oh F*ck!
It would seem that no matter what Jack does, it's the wrong thing to do. *Sigh*.
So if Ben forgets about the time-traveling Oceanic survivors, one Kahana survivor, and one future Other, that means either Ben doesn't return to Dharma until long after the main cast has disappeared or something happens to our favorite survivors in the next couple of episodes to make them disappear.

Anyways, this episode was 10 times better than the last, I really liked it. It felt like classic lost again once I saw John Locke at the end.

Hmm...murdered Locke, kidnapped Jack, Kate and Sawyer just so he can manipulate Jack into operating surgery on him, killed Keamy knowing that his death would blow up the Kahana, lied so many times.
No, I don't not like Ben. I despise him with a passion. He's an evil genius like Emperor Palpatine.

I always know what is going to happen before the episode is shown...mainly cause I always read the synopsis 3 days before the irish airdate.
I think the Egypt connection has been clear since the brief glimpse of the statue. I can't say how relieved I was that Penny didn't get killed, and I have to say that the writers did a great job of convincing me otherwise until it happened.
"The monster's not a train; it doesn't run on a schedule"... Wow, somebody hasn't used a train before. 
I have to say that the monster CGI in this was pretty cheesy.
Eh, I thought the Egyptian connection was clear since Season 2 when the Swan countdown clock switched to red hieroglyphics.
Yeah, I sort of wish they hadn't had the floating images in the smoke, it reminded me of Frodo's dream sequence at Rivendell in The Fellowship of the Ring as well as a time-traveling effect from Star Trek: Enterprise, both scenes I did not like. Something about comping out pre-shot footage and layering it on top of a bunch of CG doesn't quite work. And the smoke itself has always looked a little iffy.
That having been said, I love the whole visual aesthetic of LOST and they've done a good job of staying true to it throughout the show. I enjoy the story of course but the visuals are also one of the major elements that distinguish this show for me.

Oh, tell me about it, I love episodes like Enter 77 for their visuals as much as anything else.
I know there have been hints of ancient Egypt since Season 2, but I don't think it's been clear that ancient Egyptians settled the Island until recent episodes. On that subject, there were some boneheads on the Lostpedia discussion pages who were theorizing that the Temple and Statue were built by "egyptian slaves who escaped the black rock". 
And thank you for reminding me of Frodo's dream sequence. I remember laughing my head off while watching that with a friend.
I personally think richard,Jacob and people such as Bea Klugh are all survivors of the black rock, who somehow (via the island)gained sum kind of everlasting life/time travel abilities.
I'm still not sure about the whole Egyptian thing,but Jacob's hair and general appearance suggest that he may have been the captain of the black rock who was somehow unstuck from time (Like Desmond) and now has extreme power.Bea's general appearance suggests she may have been a slave aboard the black rock,and when Richard was first seen,he was wearing ragged clothing not unseen on a sailor.
I am also wondering about the fate of Daniel, where is he now?The only clue is this strange Dharma booth Video which has most likely got Faraday as the cameraman.
So now is the question: what happened to the Dharma ? Ben has joined the others earlier or does he return to the Dharma and kill them later.
They're in the 70's now,and "The Purge"happened in 1992.
Also,I cannot resist finding out what happens in the next episode.

Actually, that sounds really plausible, thanks for throwing it out there.
I'd be more inclined to think that Richard Alpert is ancient Egyptian, not from the 1700s. He definitely has a slightly Middle Eastern appearance, and there was that joke about the eyeliner.
