Sand red looks pink, and pink is not an allowed variant of red. So no, sand red touching a black brick does not count as the MOD element.
Come now, the colour is commonly called sand red, and it is distinct from pink, otherwise it would be called sand pink. I don't really think that's right. Sand green counts when the colour mod is green, as does sand blue.
Here's how I look at it. Looking at the sand red brick, it looks exactly like pink. If I saw that brick in a film with no context as to what specific color LEGO had assigned to it, I would consider it pink. Because it looks exactly like pink.
Sand blue and green are still clearly identifiable as the color blue and green, I don't confuse those for some other color.
