Re: What was the last TV show you watched?

Last TV show I watched (except for some cartoons this morning) was Fresh Off The Boat.

Kind of a 1990s Goldbergs without the pop culture overload.  Most of the humor was obvious, but it's still better than most non-ABC sitcoms.  The other day I saw 15 seconds of "Ground Floor" after a king of queens block ended.  That was too much of my live to waste on it.

Anyways, I expected "boat" to be more like the Middle but it was really had a lot in common with Goldbergs.  And, like "Blackish", it's not afraid to address ethnic issues maturely.  There was a second episode with what sounded like a funny synopsis, but I was tired and went to bed before 9:30.

Empire

The show is so cool. Awesome music, engrossing plot. Epic. Highly recommended.

Re: What was the last TV show you watched?

The Goldbergs.  Hilarious Valentines' day special.  The mother embarasses her her daughter as punishment: She shows up at school, holds her and exclaims in front of her classmates, "This is my daughter!  I baked her in my tummy!"  Great episode for a Philadelphia Eagles fan or Dallas Cowboys hater (or vice versa).

Lainey's Father, holding a covered dish: "And for dinner, we've got roasted Eagle!  Just Kidding!  It's chicken... but that is what the Eagles are!"

Preceded by a shocking episode of the Middle!

Fresh Off The Boat.  Episode mentioned Legos [sic].  Explained it in the Lego in TV & Movie Appearances thread.

Re: What was the last TV show you watched?

The Odd Couple remake pilot.  Actually very good.  The original Odd Couple is over 40 years old and this is a modern remake.  It is current but fairly faithful to the original series.  Pretty good for CBS, which has had some really awful sitcoms in the past 3 or 4 years, approaching NBC level.  A bad review I read subsequently in Entertainment Weekly added to my enjoyment later!  I guess the winning formula is to revive a show from past decades, like Hawaii Five-0, and Knight Rider... well, maybe not.

Power Rangers Dino Charge
Holy cannelloni this is awesome. It's a vast improvement over the last two series, Samurai and Megaforce, which were pretty bland and, in the case of Megaforce, didn't even try to have any level of depth or develop its own mythology. With Dino Charge the writers clearly seem to care more - everything feels more fleshed out, and the characters are far more likeable and engaging - and there must have been a budget increase because there are genuine dinosaurs and they look sick.

Re: What was the last TV show you watched?

Twin Peaks

It confuses me.

It kind of reminds me a bit of a creepy live-action grown-up version of Gravity Falls, actually (albeit with deranged serial killers instead of monsters).  Thus far I've watched four episodes.  The pacing is very, very, slow, especially the pilot.  There are some parts that feel very soapy, even corny, and some of the acting is really over-the-top, particularly Laura's parents--yet one can't exactly say that it's bad since it seems like this is intentional.  (If it weren't, for example, someone such as Josie, the mill owner, would likely be characterised as a clueless ditz, yet as it is she actually seems to be one of the nicer people in the town, and is certainly more pleasant than Catherine.)  At the same time there's the weirdness that comes out of nowhere (which especially ramps up in the third episode).  Many of the townspeople act really strangely, yet nobody seems to notice or find anything odd about it.  Even Agent Cooper appears to be unfazed by this, and even seems to fit right in with the townspeople in certain instances...

Spoiler (click to read)

especially after the "Tibet" thing, and his conversation with Albert after the latter's examination of Laura.

I also think I completely lost the thread after the dancing midget dream sequence.  Though the next episode did sort of partially explain it.  Sort of.

Even so, it's still interesting to watch, and I'm interested to see what will happen next.  And Dale Cooper is awesome.

Though I'm still not convinced by the efficacy of using Tibetan Buddhist Dancing Midget Dream Sequences to solve crimes.

Re: What was the last TV show you watched?

IT's supposed to be weird & disorienting, as all of Lynch's stuff.  Kinda funny that it's cropping up recently.  I never thought anything special about it back in the 1990s.  Don't see the appeal.

Over The Garden Wall
This CN miniseries was recommended by a friend of mine who likes Gravity Falls, and I found other reviews that also likened it to that show, so I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed. While it is a very weird show (made me think of a creepy Alice In Wonderland), it was also delightfully fun and engaging, with a pretty good storyline to go along. I would definitely recommend it, but not really for kids, it's a bit dark and disturbing in places.

Shameless

Kind of obsessed with this show. I binge watched the entire series in a week.

America's Funniest Videos.  I analyzed one episode once, and 34% of the videos involved people getting injured.

Re: What was the last TV show you watched?

Firefly

I was initially unsure about this show; a lot of people seem to rave about it, and I'm not an especially huge fan of Joss Whedon, so I thought I might find it to be overrated and underwhelming.  Unfortunately, it's as good as everyone says it is.  The "unfortunate" part being that there's only 14 episodes and it's so painfully good that the thought of not having more and just ending in the middle of nowhere of the story is almost unbearable.

The "space-western" mashup works surprisingly well, despite occasionally being a bit forced and awkward (holo-pool tables in shady space bars, anyone?).  The show can be slightly cheesy at times, but it often deconstructs or parodies classic sci-fi/western tropes as much as it plays them straight, bring a really nice mixture of cleverness and entertainment.  The writing is excellent, the characters feel unique and are brought to life perfectly by the actors portraying them, and the dialogue is insanely quotable.  ("Corpsified" is my new favourite word.)  I'd go so far to say that it's almost impossible to pick a favourite character, as each of them is so well-written and portrayed.  Even characters such as Jayne, who really should have no redeeming features, still (eventually) manage to feel humane, and you still end up rooting for them by the end.

What makes it so much worse is that the last episode is insanely good.  I'd really enjoyed the series up to then, but "Objects in Space" really upped the bar with some impressive cinematography, character development and overall awesomeness.  It's the first time we see River truly develop as a character and not just be the resident crazy person/brainwashed killer.  Jubal Early was also a really interesting antagonist, I wish we'd gotten to see more of him.  If the show had been allowed to continue to develop on this level I believe it could easily have become truly brilliant.  As it is, I feel like the final line of the final episode managed to perfectly sum up the fate of the show as a whole:

Arrow

Having seen about half of the first season, I'm liking it so far.  It does have something of a rough start, and the acting is often quite wooden (Laurel in particular), especially in the beginning, but it definitely gets better as it goes along.  Being somewhat familiar with DC, I've picked up a fair amount of the references/names so far, and I'm really interested to see how they'll develop.  The backstory of the notebook(s), Malcolm and Oliver's mother, and Oliver's stay on the island are particularly interesting.

Spoiler (click to read)

I knew that the series would feature Deathstroke in some capacity as soon as I saw the guy with the orange/black mask in the island flashbacks, but the reveal of Slade Wilson still surprised me.  Interestingly, it's Bill Wintergreen, his partner, who loses the same eye that Deathstroke in the comics is missing--though at this point Bill is supposedly dead...

I'm a bit surprised that Deadshot was killed off after only one episode, given that he's a pretty major DC character.  I also found the episodes involving Helena Bertinelli a bit disappointing.  It felt incredibly cliched that Oliver and Helena would near instantly fall in love after finding out they're both vigilantes, despite them fundamentally disagreeing in their methods, only to fall out again for the same reason.  It would have been much more interesting to stretch this arc out for several episodes and have them just be friends, instead of randomly throwing this in for two episodes and then suddenly have her disappear without explanation.

Though, they seem to have taken a similar approach with the character of Felicity Smoke, and I'm really enjoying her character.  I like that she's refusing to help Arrow and Diggle, beyond finding Walter instead of outright joining them upfront, it adds some variety to the characters (though I suspect she will become a "permanent" member of the team eventually).  I'm also interested to see how the Roy Harper thing will develop.  Thea's nickname of "Speedy" is obviously intentional, and it seems deliberate that Roy wears a red hoodie when we first see him.

All in all, while the beginning is pretty rough, the concept is really interesting and it definitely has potential to get better (and indeed is improving), and I'm certainly interested in continuing.

Better Call Saul

Just finished the season finale. This episode was kind of a frequently boring, meandering disappointment to me, despite the generally great quality of the acting, cinematography, and writing. On the whole, I've really enjoyed this show, I feel like it's as good as Breaking Bad much of the time, but with a less clear or satisfying progression in the narrative. Maybe that will make more sense as the show progresses.

I think it's all going to kick off in the next season, and will probably be a bit more focused.

The bingo scene in this episode was such a drag for me, other than that I enjoyed it.

I generally don't watch TV, but my family and I recently just watched the premiere of A.D. The Bible Continues and after that American Odyssey. Both of which have a good first episode. The entire series is to be determined.
