Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

The arrow has pretty much been summed up by backyardlegos. As for the short sword fighting test, I suggest moving their bodies more with each hit. They should swing more sidewards and upwards when charging up a swing and then releasing it into a fast movement without any easing out once the swords clash as this looks best. I used that technique in my recent Star Wars video I animated.

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

For the sword fight, I think probably Faster movements, with more anticipation-- more up and down movements and less short movements-- would probably work a bit better. Also it might help to try swinging a sword and see how it feels and see how far back you move your arms and such. Also it might help to remember that in animation it often helps to exaggerate the movements, especially in things like sword fights.

Hope that helps

osomstudios Exaclty. Bigger movement exaggeration will convey the force in the swinging of the swords.

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

Thanks for the comments. I am going to do some more animation tests, and definitely add more weight to the swords. I did notice many errors in the sword fighting, and those shall be fixed with practice.

As for the bow and arrow, I do agree that the stick needs to fly faster, and not start s far back. This was mentioned in chat, and not here, but Princess Storm's hand should not have been above the arrow, it should have been below. I will be practicing more on that as well.

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

Double post time:

I purchased the entire Princess Storm minifigure off Bricklink. It's in very good shape. I really needed the visor for a part in the film, so I'm glad I made the purchase.

I also purchased a few other parts that are medieval related for the film (and a few parts that have nothing to do with this film).

That's pretty much it for this update.

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

I have been working on my script less lately, because I have been making a film for Easter (which I still have to finish mini/shifty ), but I promise it's almost done. I did a few animation tests though, so you can check it out if you want.

I switched to 12fps now, so I was mainly testing the framerate and some basic animations (which I think I failed at most of them)

Tell me what you think! All comments and critiques are appreciated! (I know, it's a really bad animation test...)

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

I liked the circular motion of the camera, and the dino scare one aswell!
Come to think of it, I should probably do a test montage too.

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

In my view, the walk cycle and the running test are pretty good. I'm glad you tried some camera movements test, I think the best of them is the circle around (it is not perfect but you achieved a decent effect of circle), did you move the camera or the set?

There really wasn't a set, just a baseplate on the table, so I moved the camera. I free-handed it (as you might say), so it wasn't really smooth.

I animated yet another sword fight test. This time, I think it came out a little better than the other ones, but I have to break my habit of easing when the swords clash.

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

I realise you said so yourself, but stop easing out on sword clashes. It'll look so much better without it. Also, I think the characters fall a little too far when being pushed back by the sword clash.

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

Those sword fights are quite good (I prefer the first one), but the part  when minifig falls can be improved(it seems too rigid, in my view). As a personal suggestion, you can also test some camera movements while they're fighting in order to give more dynamism. Some months ago I did a short medieval fight that may inspire you. Also you can take some ideas from fights from movies, series...

I like this second sword fight better. However, the falls could be better.

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

sword fight needs less easing.  I know it's a test but put a metal clash sfx where the swords contact and your test will give a far better indication.

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

Thanks for the tips! I'll definately keep those in mind as I animate some more tests.

So here's the update:

I thought I had my script almost done with this production topic. I was already starting production, drawing concept art, making minifigs, even beginning to design the sets. Then I realizes it ended terribly and it was too long. So I've been revising and rewriting a lot, and am now back in pre-production. However, this is not a bad thing, because I feel that the script is coming along much more nicely than the original one.

Today, I took a short break from writing and made the following little test. Basically, I am trying out digital decal replacement so I can have a lot of different options for some scenes when I need specific wardrobe changes. It's not perfect yet, but it's a good start. I will need to work on simulating depth of field, making the hand overlay the decal instead of going behind it, and a few other things before I can actually use it in a film. But at least I'm making progress. mini/wink

That looks great!

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

Another small update:

The script is nearly finished. Thanks to fantastic help from a few people, I have conquored the script and now I just need to work out a few kinks and it will be ready to film.

In the meantime, I went ahead and built a set for the film:

This is still early, I don't have all the furniture or decorations, but I just thought I'd post a pic anyway. If you want, you can give critiques on it, but keep in mind it's not finished mini/wink

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

Rioforce,

I am really looking forward to this, and I must say that pic above is just beautiful! While it isn't finished its still quite a beauty to look at. I mean the windows and the door and just great, they give a good aspect of the olden ages and how the windows at that time were. I love the outside of the house as while it is blurred it does give the illusion of a rocky landscape and the house possibly being near or on a mountain or ridge of some sort.

I do like the red flooring as well as its something different rather than the usual grey baseplate. So it's nice to see. I am not sure what else you're thinking of adding nor do I know how big this house is. But none the less this is looking great, so good job man!

Sincerely,
Divine.

Re: Princess Storm - Production Topic

This looks really nice Rioforce.
One thing about Princess Storm. I think it's kinda weird that she has red hair printed on the head, and then a brown hairpiece.
I understand that red hairpieces are rare, so I see why you went with brown.
Overall it looks pretty cool.
