Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

The alley looks great Galactic.
I love the jumble of bricks of all different types. The color choices are good, and the little bit of snow is just perfect. Not too much, so that it overpowers the building, but just enough to show it's a snowy environment.

The only issue is that it's a bit small, limiting the camera angles you can use. BUT, get creative enough, or destroy/rebuild different walls, and that shouldn't be too restricting.

I have to agree about Atlantis, the set ends too abruptly, and the background doesn't seem like "Middle of undersea city" but rather "mostly open ocean." Also, it'd be cool to have mini-models in the background for the city and its buildings rather than some drawing. I love the glowing floor, but the wiggly with studs just doesn't look right. I know tiles are a pain to animate on, but doing what you did on the sides would look great.
Also, OCD alert, but the tridents aren't all turned at the same angle. The ones on the right look better, and the ones on the left should have more of the flat side facing us.

it was kinda based partly of the Iron throne.... I'll have a think about the redesign, so, what I need is:

  • more of a 'wallish' thing signaling the end of the set and the start of the window.

  • statues, pref 4 or 6?

I would say 4. You don't want to overclutter the set. Maybe have two just in front of and either side of the throne, and then the next two further down the walkway?

I really like that, Galactic!

Those brick bricks remind me that in Lego Friends (and the Detective Agency), they started producing a new double brick brick (1x4).

Thanks guys. mini/smile I'm not finished with it yet, I mainly wanted to know if I was headed in the right direction detail wise.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Here is a set I worked on a bit last night and this morning.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Wow, that looks great! Love the asymmetrical-ness of the archway, and the consistency of the colour scheme.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

That's a big set! At least, by my standards that's big. I tend to make small sets. mini/tongue

It reminds me of Indiana Jones for some reason. Not sure what you're going to use it for, but hey, it looks cool anyway. I like how it's lifted off the ground. I'm going to have to do that someday, I can just never get my sets stable enough without needing a baseplate...

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Harborlight, my main concern with a set like that is how the camera will see it, if you do a wide shot on it will the
set cover everything the camera sees? I also don't really like building set at that scale on grey baseplates as the extra  baseplate sticking out at the bottom can get in the way during setup and animation.

This is actually supposed to be the top of a mountain-like-thing. The way up is shorter in reality but will won't appear like that in camera. Everything beyond this set will be blue screened/green screened.

I can do a wide shot with a green/blue screen, if I couldn't then I wouldn't have elevated the set.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

The char itself looks really cool, however, they leg positioning feels really strange and they don't feel like they are part of his body.  I understand that you may be going for a realistic look, but it feels strange since minifigures can't actually bend the knee.

Perhaps you could instead build brick built legs, which may possibly look less weird.

I would probably just have him sitting there, though.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

As an iconic representation of a person, I think it's all right.  Very clever way to position the leg and make it work.

A big sword, for when a normal sword isn't enough.

(These are some sword concept designs, however, they are not for Welcome to Darkmoor.  I just left the greyscale setting on because I was in the middle of filming)

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I particularly like the smaller-big sword, though the use of the Magma Broadsword in the second picture is also quite fun.

The first one feels like it belongs on a statue or something (perhaps as part of the decoration of a big headstone).

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Either might work as a more appropriately sized sword for that robot I made recently perhaps.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I thought your big sword was a cricket bat at first

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I think the first one works quite well at a minifig scale, though it would be a pain to animate with. Not sure about the Bionicle magma sword though, the technic holes make it feel a bit weird.
