kinda over did it with the motion blur (took 2.5 hours to render.)
with the motion blur turned down a little.....
With motion blur it looks much better, but the shading on some parts are still weird.
Bumpety-bump.
So I've been playing around with the cycles renderer in Blender to try to make relatively realistic LEGOs. I'm not planning on adding bump mapping, since that would be too tedious for a large, full size set. And as for the "LEGO" on each stud, I wouldn't put that onto the bricks, should I use this in a large project.
nice mate, looks good, I made the Helicopter in this:

its cgi.
here's a still:
Gotta say it blended well with the scene. Nice job.
*push* (Opps) *bump*
Anyway. My brother and I just finished a new short brickfilm a couple of days ago, The Survivor, and I thought I would post some CG I did for it. The following picture is the credits background for the movie and is 100% CG:
I thought it turned out pretty good given I didn't spend much time on it, and thought I would revive this thread. Let me know what you think if you want!

That looks excellent, nice attention to detail on the grain and the slightly rounded edges /crookedness on the bricks. It is a little evident that the scratches were added in photoshop given they line up from one brick to another.
Thanks for the comment Sméagol! Yep, nice catch, I did indeed add the scratches in post. I probably should have fixed that issue (I could have very easily) but I was already running over my time budget for this. Oh well. I hope it doesn't detract from the picture to much. I should probably not let something like that go next time...
Bump
Hey, I use Cinema 4d for my CG work and I was wondering if anyone knew how to make the bricks look more rounded?
Thanks
I was also wondering if there's away to animate a cgi object onto video?
Thanks again
The process in feature films is:
Film your video
Run a 3D track of your video using a 3d camera tracker
bring the 3D tracking information into your 3d software, and an image sequence of your video at the correct FPS
set your video as an image plane so you can line up your 3d stuff, you also use the tracking data to position your 3d objects correctly
render out just your animation with an alpha channel
comp the animation and video together in some comping software.
Obviously its a lot more complicated that that.. I just breezed through in rough terms. These guys will probably explain it better, too long haha
This is one of the opening shots for my upcoming film. I really wanted the planets to look realistic, so I followed a tutorial on how to make a realistic earth and applied the same process to my own planets. I do realize I could have done better on the spacecraft, as well as the engine exhaust or whatever you want to call that. Despite all that, I think this is some of my best work in my CGI career, even though I haven't done much.
Add some lens flare from the sun, always adds to space scenes
I feel like the planets need to be more shadowed. Also, the atmosphere on both looks too fake (not sure how you'd fix it). As for the ship, if you're using Blender, I'd recommend adding an edge split modifier to the bricks and using smooth shading to make them slightly more realistic.
@dt98 - If you go here, I believe there's some tips to help make more realistic legos in Cinema4d. Like, post 90.
Kind of a preview of a clip I'm working on that is going to involve two Classic Space figs. Not a "film" per se, but animation nonetheless. I hope to have it done around the end of the month.
That looks awesome Littlebrick.
The only qualm I have is that the studs on the brick still have lines/aren't totally circular. Aside from that, the quality and clarity is very nice.
