Topic: Wuxia test

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kk8bUsy7tk

The first 12 seconds of the video is my Wuxia test. Actually the masking for that bit isn't done yet, sorry. I didn't want to finish all the masking just to find out my frame rate is wrong or something. But if it makes sense to finish the masking before posting this, I'll do that.

Mostly, I want to see if I have the right number of frames or do I need more or less frames. Also, I want to test if the movements is akin to the Wuxia genre.

Subs and Likes in exchange for constructive comments. Please don't say "Roll over and die" or "Die in a Fire." It gets old.

Re: Wuxia test

Some of the movements were a bit choppy - you're taking enough pictures, it's just that the camera shakes from side to side during the footage. Otherwise, this is very good, and a lot more adventurous than the stuff I've tried.

Also, with the table zoom thing (which I really like) the food items disappear too soon, so a fraction of a second before the camera passes 'through' them, though I'm not sure how you get around this problem.

The masking that you have done is pretty good, and I'd love to see the opening Wuxia-style shots fully masked at some point.

BTW is that a giant toilet at the end?

Re: Wuxia test

Thanks for taking the time to watch the video.

I think I can make the camera movements smooth but I thought I wanted it to be a bit choppy ala found-footage style of movie-making. Do you think it is working? If audiences will just write that off as a rookie mistake, then I will dump that idea.

I was using gears to move the camera through the food. I think I can try different gears to control the torque. Maybe I can add 2 -3 more frames per movement for that shot just to see what it looks like.

Yup, I should masked all the Wuxia opening scenes before posting. Maybe I'll do that when this is ready for release. You'll also find out if that is a giant toilet at the end when it's completed *plug plug* mini/wink

Yeah, I think it comes off more as 'rookie error', like you said. The fact you tried to do found footage in-camera is cool.

I look forward to it!

Re: Wuxia test

You must have some fancy camera rigs.  I'd love to see some photo's of your designs.  I'm on my third iteration of a crane and I'm still not happy with it.

The opening shots are good.  I think if you mask them they'll be a winner.  The remainder of the clip has a rocky camera.  It looks like a rookie is rolling a camera across studs.  Sorry if you were hoping for a different effect.

btw, I don't think anyone on this forum would ask you to die in a fire.  mini/wink

Re: Wuxia test

Thanks.

Actually I use studless pieces for my crane/dolly/jib/slider. I don't know what to call it anymore, I never went to filmmaking school. Mostly I prefer the Sarrus or Scott-Russell linkages for my camera rig. I guess Watt's or scissor would also work but then they would need really strong casings, Oldham or Schmidt couplings maybe? I just use a basic truss.

I hope you are familiar with Lego Technic. Otherwise, it sounds like I am speaking in Klingon, doesn't it? Would love to share photos with you but if you can give me a couple of weeks to sort out my work stuff. I do think a really good design for a crane would be the 42009 Mobile Crane MK ii. You can download the instructions actually if you google Lego instructions 42009. The crane and the gear box starts at Book 4. They use 2 linear actuators and a pulley. I modified that.

If none of this is making sense, maybe you can link me in the thread for your crane and I will share photos with you there. I want to see your crane as well.

As for my rocky camera work, yah, I get that a lot, ha-ha. I don't why I enjoy jerky camera movements, maybe I've been watching too much Blair Witch Project, Modern Family and Parks & Recreation. I might try making it less choppy. But if that still doesn't work, then I'll dump the idea.

I was just kidding about flaming comments. I think I got immune to them. mini/smile
