Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Very good Backyard, I like it.

If I were to offer some tips, they would be to bring the fireplace chimney out from the wall one stud. I'd also make sure you put some paper on the other side of the open windows. I'm not sure what I think about the two-color stripe, so you may want to wait on somebody else's feedback on that. The rug idea is great, and not done that often.

What would be amazing is if you used Lifelights to give the fireplace a nice red glow, but I dunno if you have any.

Simple, but very nice. I really like the bookshelves and fireplace, though Pritchard is right, it would look better pulled out one stud. But overall a really nice set, good work. mini/wink

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

It's great! But one thing that caught my eye (a small thing), there's a lot of brown. The bookshelves, the table, the floor, the mantle, and some on the walls. If maybe you could break it up? And if not, like I said it's just a small thing; other than that it looks awesome! The globe, mini/smile , that is cool.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Wonderful design it's spot on, but I agree with Legocloniac477, a little bit too much brown. Maybe replace the brown on the walls with something else?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Okay, I pulled the fireplace out one stud, and it looks a lot better, not sure why I didn't do that in the first place. mini/tongue I know there's a lot of brown, but I shoot almost exclusively with a 50 mm prime lens, which means that the floor isn't going to show up very much, and I think that there's enough color on the wall to keep the brown from being monotonous. Also, I'm going for the sort of all brown look to the study, it was popular in the late 1800's, the time I'm going for. Pritchard, I also switched the two colored stripe to one color, it looks better. mini/smile

This is part of a set I made for filming a short parody of Indiana Jones. Does it look like it's an archaeology professor's office?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

It's too cramped and a doesn't really fit the 1940s style of Indiana Jones. Also, I'm curious, why is there a Minifigure Series 8 Conquistador calmly standing there?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

@Carousel, It's supposed to be a statue.

I've done something like that before, but I would suggest you change the head out, for a clear one; so it looks like a glass statue inside the armor.

Great set! I need to get my hands on that globe.

The brown does seem to overwhelm in the overall shot of the set, but I think the framed shot looks perfectly fine. I wouldn't reduce the brown, I agree with your reasoning that it fits the interior design of the time.

The only thing I might change is the design of the desk to the left. It's the only thing that blends in too much with the brown floor. Is there any way you can break it up with some dark gray, or dark tan? It's also rather plain compared to the rest of the furniture.

Spot on, thanks for the tip too.

@carousel: the film is about modern archaeology, so it looks like a modern office.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

On the office, it looks quite jumbled together and not very well planned out.
The light grey curve element sticks out like a sore thumb, and the walls don't go near high enough to be practical.
The red bricks in that wall are out of place, and the castle top piece seems slapped on for no reason.

The two side walls match, and look fairly good, but that far wall is made up of all sorts of things. (Tan, grey and red, plus brown shelves.) The yellow chairs don't really go with anything, and the overall look makes it seem like you're really limited on your bricks.

Final tip: Cut down the color count. Randomly colored things are fine on a book shelf, but not scattered all throughout the room. Find what bricks you have, and build something with them, even if one wall doesn't match the others, find a good reason for it to be so. (All the shelves are over there, that's the exposed brick wall, whereas the others are Sheetrock, Ect.) Just be sure to make it blend well.

Welcome back Nathan Wells, you haven't been on for like two years. Glad to see you back. mini/delirium

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Thank you for the feedback. While a lot of you said it's small, I'm trying to keep it that way.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Better than the first, though I would suggest making sure everything is well connected to the bricks bellow them.

Well, here is a few pics of the first set that I finally finished for the contrast contest mini/bigsmile . Simple set, but I think it does a decent job of portraying medievalish period cottages.

All of the pictures were taken right after I finished the set, so there is no color correction or anything.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

That looks great, I honestly can't find anything there that needs to be changed.

@Nathan: Thanks for the suggestion, I updated the desk, and the set is now in it's final stage, almost time for animation! mini/bigsmile

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Wow! Great set GEF! Love the attention to detail!

I actually have never posted here, but I'd like to get in the habit of doing so so that I can get the most out of my sets.

Here's my current set:

Here's a pic to give some perspective:

I feel like it's missing something. Extra details maybe? What do you guys think?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

@GEF - I feel like the yellow roofs are a bit too bright compared to the rest of the set. I'm assuming they're supposed to be made of hay, but if you look at real thatched roofs you'll see that they're usually a lot closer to brown or gray than yellow. I'd suggest you try switching the yellow out for tan or dark tan to fit the rest of the set better.

@GHB - Your set looks pretty good, but the color choices on some of the furniture don't make much sense to me (like the grey plate on the couch, the blue chair, and the white tabletop on the round tan brick) and the red stripe is weird. The yellow shelf is also kind of distracting (and I feel like it's a bit too full). The white furniture and walls also blend together and seem washed out.

But I think the amount of furniture you have in there is realistic and it does look like a living room. The only details I think you might be lacking are some pictures on the walls. Nice work!

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Too much white, and too much open space above the guys head.

A nice stripe right above the window should fix that, or you could try adding 'Paintings' and wall decorations lower down, and just avoid showing the very top of the wall. That way, you don't have too many stripes running around all over the place, and you could have a bit more unique look.

I like the tiny red stripe between the grey and white, and you did well on the computer desk. It looks like you put a grey stripe right down the middle of the couch, even though it's probably best to leave things like that one color.

The book shelf would look more natural if you took several books out, and then twisted one or two to face the camera. You could also raise the supports one plate for each shelf, take out some books, and then have the rest leaning over with a bit of headroom. Because everything is nice and lined up, it looks like a multi-colored modern art thing as opposed to a bookshelf. You should also consider stacking something on top of the bookshelf, nothing big, but just a little something.

The bookshelf and the open, blank headroom are the two biggest issues, but they shouldn't be that hard to fix.
