Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Thanks for the help Pritchard, I used all your suggestions and it looks much better!

I added a few white tiles on the outside.  Inside I put some trans-clear cheese slopes, trans-light blue studs (1 x 1 round plates) and some 1 x 1 white tiles.  I think it turned out pretty well.

The wall now has some weird machine-ish type thing with some cool printed tiles and some electronic tiles all along one wall and the door is moved and there's going to be another separate room and I added a bunch of those grey crates...

...and...I'll just post pictures next week.

Thanks for the tips mini/tongue

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Here's a couple of Batman-related WIPs I've been working on and experimenting around with:

Wayne Manor, with a secret passage to the Batcave.

The main entrance to Arkham Asylum (it's still a bit bare, but I'm still working on it):

Some of the security guards.

What do you think?  Any constructive criticism or ideas on how to improve it?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Han Solo frozen in carbonite seems a little bit out of place, only since everyone knows what it is, and it's obviously from a different fictional universe. Unless it's a Batman Star Wars mash up, I think you might want to change it to something else. The rest of the set looks nice though, and I like the gate and tower, with a little more foreground detail and something behind it other than your wall it will look great. mini/smile

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

The bookshelves/display cases look perfect, along with the piano, tree, and table settings.  Like backyardlegos said, the Han Solo in carbonite does look a bit strange in there.  Maybe try some kind of painting made up of 1 x 1 tiles, or perhaps a suit of armor, something along those lines?
Just interested, are the walls behind the bookcases tan or are they just mismatching colors not seen?

For the entrance to Arkham just be sure you add something along the ground.  Maybe shrubbery, rocks, (a few) trees, trash (?), stuff like that.  I really like the detailing on what you have so far.

Nothing else I can really think of, sorry I'm not much help.

Oh yeah, be sure to clean the set well before filming...I see some dust and is that a hair on the floor of Wayne Manor? mini/tongue

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Very nice!

Manor-The "glass" in the bookshelves is a great idea, and all the props look great in this. With the exception of Han, that room looks flawless. I'd say some sort of a banner would look fairly good there.

Arkham-Like Jonn said above, the ground is a bit plain, but other wise the gate is good. The tower doesn't seem to reflect the same aesthetic though, as it's light gray, and the walls are a bit too nice and smooth. Adding some textured bricks, changing it to dark gray, and doing something with the black wall part. Right now the black area looks like it was added on as an after-thought to detail things up a bit more. It's not very well integrated into the existing structure, and could use a bit of re-tooling.

For the ground details, I suggest doing a bit of landscaping using plates. (Like this) Having the ground be a bit uneven and broken up gives it a wonderfully detailed, and natural feel. And adding a few rocks would also help a lot.

IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Thanks for the great feedback!

I guess Han might be a bit out of place, but it's meant to be a sort of sculpture/ornament thing.  I like coming up with alternative uses for unusual bricks so I set myself a challenge of sorts to see how many uses I could come up with for the Carbonite Bath brick.

@JonnDthunDer:  They're multi-coloured bricks (except where you can see the wall--by the minifig statue/trophy for instance--where I used black to make it look like the back of the bookcase).  I have very little beige brick, in fact this used up just about all the beige bricks I own, so I have to be very sparing with how I use them.

@Pritchard: I actually intend for Arkham Asylum to be set within Gotham City (instead of on the outskirts), hence there would be concrete instead of natural landscaping (but I might change that somewhat, I'll have to see how it goes). I'll also add more buildings which look similar to the guard tower around the gate, so the tower would look less out of place. The building is meant to be a guard tower made out of stone/concrete, whereas the gate is a sort of metal painted black, if that makes more sense.

I just have to say that I love how all the Arkham guards even have an 'A' on their chests from the Agents sets. mini/cat

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

*Bump*

Medieval-y Town Square set. The last set I need for a short animation that I hope to release soon.

There are several more pictures over on my Facebook page.
Any thoughts?

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

It looks really cool. Only thing I can spot is the little pieces on the ground look kind of out of place, like the 2x2 tile with one stud or the two 1x2 slopes. Can't wait to see what you're making. mini/smile

This is really good. Don't change a thing.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

I agree with squid.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

OK....I guess all those Bricklink Orders over the past year or two have really paid off. mini/twitch

Thanks a lot guys, although I'm sure it can't be that perfect. I'll see what I can do about the more random floor tiles/decorations, but I reckon' the rest will stay as is. The animation should be up soon-ish, but don't expect too much from it. It's just a little something for the sake of releasing something every so often.

I need to do that, today hopefully mini/sweat

Any who, that is a stellar set design, it looks great!

Yah, I really really like it the way it is. mini/smile

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Very, very nice.  I love it.  It does look more Arabic/Oriental than Western Medieval to me, though, but the set itself is beautifully done.

Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread

Thanks again, and FlyingMinifig, you're right.
It needs more wood, and probably more color to be a good medieval town. Thanks for pointing that out.

That film is done, and will be released tomorrow. But sadly, the few clips that the set is in just don't do it justice, so I'll probably re-use it in my animation challenge entry just to show all the great details off a bit more before it's destruction.
