Re: The CGI Thread

I tried a few things last night and started to get somewhere, I think. The more I do with this stuff though, the more I realise that I'm trying to run before I can walk. I might just go back to following a few more tutorials before I start trying to do crazy things like putting a light source inside a transparent dome (an hour of rendering followed by a crash).

Re: The CGI Thread

Fellow Carrara users, I'd like to know if any of you have had better luck figuring out a workaround to Carrara's current lack of dynamic cloth.

The cape you see here is rigged on an armature with hours of tweaking the weight painting of the cape mesh to make it somewhat flexible like a cloth.  I have yet to find an easier way of modifying the weight influence of each bone (such as importing a grayscaled image).  It's an ironic case of open source program (Blender) being better than commercial product (Carrara).

I whipped this up today.
Exported from LeoCAD, imported into Blender 2.49 with the LDraw import script, Bevel modifier added, Edge Split modifier added, material made slightly transparent and reflective, lamp added inside.

The broken geometry on a lot of the LDraw elements is working out for me because it makes the wireframes look more interesting.

I've messed up one of his legs at some point. There's always something, isn't there?

That makes me happy.

Re: The CGI Thread

Anyone here know how to make LeoCad lego minifigs look realistic?

Re: The CGI Thread

Well, maybe export them to an actual 3D processor/renderer and render from there, using volumetric lighting, ambient occlusion and messing with the global illumination settings.

Re: The CGI Thread

Would Blender work for that?

Re: The CGI Thread

It would, yes. Google those settings for your version of Blender.

Re: The CGI Thread

I have the newest version of Blender, so I'll do that. Thanks for your help.

Re: The CGI Thread

Sorry, but I had a question or two. First, is the Global Illumination necessary, because I can't find it on Blender? Second, which of these brick tests looks the best, one, two, or three?
Pic 1
Pic 2
Or Pic 3
Pics 1 and 2 had different ambient occlusion settings, and Pic 3 included an enviroment lighting setting.

Re: The CGI Thread

Global Illumination actually isn't a feature in Blender yet, but there are ways to fake it. Link.

I'd have to say 3.

Re: The CGI Thread

Pic 3 looks the best. I would suggest, however, pumping up the ambient occlusion just a touch.

Re: The CGI Thread

A quick CGI question. Can you use Blender without a number pad on the side of your keyboard?

hey Superbanzai, try cycles.  it's a new rendering engine that makes stuff look much more realistic mini/smile
