I really don't want to continue this debate, it's just getting people annoyed for nothing, but I just have to poke in that no one ever said they think you think Blender is bad. I'm not entirely sure how Maya is more versatile in the overall though, because although the program might not have quite as steep a learning curve, it's certainly not versatile in the fact that it costs boatloads of money.

Edit: So there's this one thing I made a while back that I'm considering making a character to go with it.

How should one go about starting the character model for this? I haven't done too much modeling as far as real people/living things, mainly having focused on Lego stuff and inanimate objects, so any help/tips/all that good stuff would be awesome. (Yes, I could and most likely will also change the colors of the sword to look cooler and match the armor of the character I make for it.)

The best way to start a character model is by doing 2d concept. You have a lot more freedom to explore your ideas with a pencil and paper then with any modeling tools. Try drawing your guy in different poses and different situations to really flesh out his character. Once you have the concept down, draw you a front and side view. Once you have those two drawings down, you should be good to start into blender.

This is a really great tutorial series. I know the guy who did them, so I might be biased, but really, they are great.

Edit: And, the sword looks great!

Re: The CGI Thread

Indeed. Sorry if i came off as anti blender, it's good that everyone here uses it and can help each other out.

Re: The CGI Thread

Wow, that guy's really cool James! I find myself loving his tutorials, they're quite good. The only sad part is that he doesn't have any more tutorials than just three or four of them. I'll definitely do that when I model my character, it looks awesome!

Wonder if BuilderBrothers can update their first post with links so these Post-without-reading-30-pages newbies know where to go without us having to give the same response repeatedly.

If this doesn't blow your mind, Binding Bricks, then you got a clue.

Re: The CGI Thread

I'm not liking how thin that sword gets at the end BG. Swords are more about breaking bones then fine cutting. I like the handle though.

Actually, the end looks very flat because of the lighting/angle. It does still stay the same thickness towards the end, it's just a bit of a shading deception. And also, the more I look at it, I think the colors really need to be changed. Maybe a red/green/blue handle would look better.

Re: The CGI Thread

StudioL30,
I'd recomend beveling all the bricks. (it looks like some are and some aren't) real lego bricks have slightly rounded corners...
also, the lighting will loom more realistic if you use two area lamps and position them where you would position lamps in real life   turn the ray shadow samples up to about 9 or 10 so you get nice soft shadows.
other than that, it looks great, totally digging that water mini/bigsmile
