Re: How to Post Your Film

Only one thing I have to add to Sméagol's comment... the fact that "The Magician's Hat" took second place in Septemberfest is irrelevant. Contest results only indicate how good a film is compared to the other entries.

(And before someone gets offended, no, I'm not implying that I thought every Septemberfest entry was garbage.)

Re: How to Post Your Film

Yeah, I meant to mention that; contest placements are only relativistic to other entries in the contest, so placing in a contest does not provide any assurance of directory acceptance.

Re: How to Post Your Film

Cheers Sméagol and Noodle, its great to know what you think. I can see what you mean about the contest too.
The thing that surprised me the most was the fact that it got the same overall as my 'A day for Heroes' film. I think that TMH was definitely better than that. It just depends who reviews it I suppose, so if it was re-reviewed, then I would be very grateful. mini/bigsmile

Re: How to Post Your Film

Haha... I was about to post a response asking just how long my submitted film would take to be available for viewing (I don't care for score etc, I would just like people to be able to see it). However, having read most of the posts in this discussion, I can see that you're extremely busy and compared to some entries, I might as well have submitted my video yesterday. I'm sure you're doing the best you can, so I'll stay patient and just wait. Thanks guys, keep up the exceptionally hard work.

Re: How to Post Your Film

I have an issue with our film for Avant-Garde. I understand that it wasn't recommended, but I've seen films that were much worse than ours. I also have an issue with "The Smoking Pun" and "It's a Magical World" being recommended and "The Missing Piece" being in "All Films". So, I hope there is a restructuring of some sort, because I think some films, not just ours, are being unfairly reviewed, while some not-as-good films are being rated as 6 or 7 stars.

Re: How to Post Your Film

I have a thought, perhaps setting standard guidelines, a list of what to look for in a film, before deciding to recommend it, or put it in the usual film area would be in order.

Re: How to Post Your Film

The problem is that reviewing is subjective, and it's always going to be. We have a list of standard guidelines, but different people have different interpretations. The story was slow and hackneyed, but the dialogue wasn't bad... should the story rating be a 4 or a 6? There was light flicker, poor sets, and simple camera angles, but they were framed well... a 3 for cinematography or a 5? There's no way to quantify things like this, and making an attempt to do so would only slow the reviewing process down even further without improving anything.

I'll refrain from commenting further until I've talked with the staff. Your film will be posted in the Panel forum for possible re-review.

========================

EDIT: OK... If you honestly think that "The Missing Piece" is better than "The Smoking Pun," any attempt at rational discussion on my part is likely a waste of time. Every single shot in your film was from the same high angle, most of them were out of focus, the sets were minimal, the story was impossible to understand most of the time... if I'd reviewed it, the ratings might have been even lower. "The Smoking Pun" may not have been a masterpiece, but the timing was good and had a short build-up with a decent payoff. Think that's just my opinion? Check the community ratings... "Missing Piece" is a 1.86/5 with seven ratings, while "Smoking Pun" is a 3.0/5 with five ratings. Be careful what you wish for...

I have to reluctantly agree with you "Magical World" probably shouldn't have been recommended, but at this point it would be useless (and rude) to reclassify it so late after the fact.

By the way, enjoy the new friends you made by throwing them under the bus like that.

Re: How to Post Your Film

I still have to disagree, but whatever. I do have an argument that "The Smoking Pun" had some framing issues, as well as some shots out of focus as well, but since I'm the only person who thinks that our film should be rated higher, I guess I'll be quiet.

How long does it usually take for a film to be submitted?

Re: How to Post Your Film

It depends on how many films are in waiting. I would say about a month at the most. Also, just to let you know, not all films will be in the recommended section, only films that the review panel think are well executed. Hope that helped mini/smile

The rest go to the "all films" section.

Never said it didn't. But even if we ignore the camera work (and I think SP holds a slight advantage there), in terms of the execution of the story, "Smoking Pun" wins by a landslide. Yours may have been more involved, but complexity does not equal excellence.

In reference to ZAB's question, the current wait is somewhere between 1-2 months... not ideal, I know, but we got slammed with all the THAC entries and it's going to take a while to get through the backlog, especially with college now starting up again. Like mcoov hinted at, make sure you're checking the "all films" section, as only above-average films are featured on the front page.

Re: How to Post Your Film

I completely agree actually. While story is always a key factor, it doesn't necessarily mean that a longer film is ultimately better. Especially when the afore said brickfilm isn't well executed, making it harder to follow.

Quality of quantity essentially.

Re: How to Post Your Film

say me and one of my friends made a film about a man trying to eat legos. the legos are all stopmotion but some of the diner is live action. does this count as a brickfilm?

Re: How to Post Your Film

Yes.

Re: How to Post Your Film

As long as there is stop-motion of brick-based building toys occurring in a majority of the film, then yeah, it'll be fine. What you've described sounds like it would qualify, but if you're unsure, shoot me a link before you submit it and I'll check it out.
