Topic: "True" motion blur test

a topic that brickfilmers have wondered over for ages:  motion blur.  some brickfilms have a motion blur type thing going on, but "brickfilm motion blur" doesn't quite look like "true motion blur".

Now, let me get some terms straight here, "brickfilm motion blur" is when adjacent frames are faded togther (keshen does it).  it looks ok, but it's really not all that convincing.
"true motion blur" is that look that you get in real video footage when something is moving fast and it's sort of blury.

If only it was possible to somehow have "true motion blur" in a brickfilm.

Well, guess what, it is.  After weeks of "researching" (which was actually letting my mind wonder and think about this topic), I finally figured out how it's done.

so without further delay, here it is:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxhJ--aa5eU

If you guys want, I can post a video explaining how I did it, or even a tutorial on how you can do it at home.

Re: "True" motion blur test

Brilliant, now I don't have to go out and buy Reelsmart to get a good motion blur. a tutorial would be nice, and the animation itself was good, just need to watch your lighting.

Re: "True" motion blur test

Interesting method. But with AE or PS, just chose Directional Blur and you're set - I've seen clips of animation with this method. I don't bother watching your "Brickfilm MB". Either way, I never did like the motion blur effect on stop motion.

Re: "True" motion blur test

haha i've actually used that methed becfore, and it works really well.  only, it's sorta time consuming.  in that vid, i showed the technique i used, but it's a little to complex to show in a 30 seoond-long video...

interesting
Would be nice to see with some dynamic animation though
Nice job

Re: "True" motion blur test

That looks unnvervingly real...

Re: "True" motion blur test

sorry to let some of you down, but i did it with after effects...  still want a tutorial?

Oh, and btw,

I hope to do some further testing with some more dynamic animation mini/wink  this was just a quick test to see if my method works

Re: "True" motion blur test

You are a god! mini/bigsmile Great test! I want a tutorial.

Re: "True" motion blur test

Yes, I have AE so it works for me.

I wouldn't go that far, I still saw some light flicker. But great stuff, very realistic blur too.

Re: "True" motion blur test

My god, why do you care about light flicker? He's doing a test for true motion blur, you don't have to care about the quality of the animation, or the lighting, or the cinematography, it's just a test for motion blur, you have to watch only the motion blur. And anyway, a lot of brickfilm classics have light flicker and average animation: they're still awesome.
On "tropic": Very interesting, I would love to see a tutorial on how you did this. Btw, what's that "frame blended"?

Re: "True" motion blur test

Interesting idea and method. The result is nice although the way frame blending works, I have my doubts as to whether this would be a viable option for any shots more complex than a side view of a minifigure arm.

Ok, I'll make one.  do you guys want a text tutorial or video tutorial?

It's an awesome thing that after effects can do where it basically takes a low fps shot and turns it into a high fps shot.  Sometimes it doesn't really work, like Sean said.  I'll explain it in the tutorial.

Don't worry, it's just an exaggerated word mini/wink

Do you know if we can make the ''Frame blended'', on other softwares?

Nope, I don't think there is mini/frustrated

Sorry, it's gonna have to be a text tutorial because i got an add-on to my braces that makes it so i can't really talk.  I hope to make a video tutorial on it in the future, though...

Re: "True" motion blur test

Awsome video!
If the blur was incresed, it might look like something from The matrix.
And, yes, I would also like a tutorial.

Re: "True" motion blur test

This is fantastic, the blur really adds alot to the animation, thanks for posting this!

Re: "True" motion blur test

I tried doing this just now, came out ok. Not as beautiful as yours though. And plus I don't have frame blending.

Re: "True" motion blur test

I remember MiniMation did something like this for his animations. Though I seem to recall him saying he used Paint.net or something.

I experimented with this a little bit in my film Social Experiment. It makes for a pretty interesting effect, but the process is incredibly time-consuming (I used a mask and directional blur).
