Topic: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

After seeing all the amazing starships and renderings from Lechnology, we have decided to begin working on our own space fleet!  We will continually post updates here, including images and video renderings.

Here is our first ship for the fleet: Heavy Armored Command Vessel

We will continually make more posts with more additions to the fleet.

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

good, altough you should try to make gaps between the bricks. There's a tutorial on the internetz about that. You should try to google it. mini/wink

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

Thanks for the critique!  We actually like the fact that there are no gaps between the bricks, but that is our opinion...

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

Pretty good.  You may want to work on the shaders to make it more realistic.  Specifically with Highlight and Shininess.

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

I agree with T.G. Tom, it seemed very blocky, so I'd make a bigger gap so it's more like "this is lego and it's supposed to be this way." mini/tongue

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

When it showed the hull and ship bays, the engine flame looked a bit like it was closer to the camera than everything else, it looked as if it wasn't actually in the engine, it looks more like it was put on as a 2D effect.

Could you explain in more detail?  We are not sure what you mean.  What highlight color would we use, and what shininess level would you recommend?

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

Actually, I use percentage for both Highlight and Shininess.  Try full highlight and low Shininess.  Just toy around with it.

What program did you make that in?

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

We used Carrara 5 and LEOCad, but you can also use Blender and LDraw to do the same.

(Sorry for the double post)

P.S. We also have changed the color design of the Heavily Armored Command Vessel, but we will upload these changes later.  As you can see, our fleet's colors are blue and grey.

*BUMP*

We made some ship animations using our fleet ships.  You can see them here.  Special thanks to Lechnology for all the help in instructing us in how to do most of the effects.  Also, credit to Kevin Macleod for the awesome score!

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

Pretty good for a first attempt.  Scene Ambient could be turned down a bit (maybe to 5%).  Additionally, the "laser" fire could move a lot faster, try a higher velocity.  And what did you use for the engine glow?  I have tips depending on what you used.

We just used a bulb with light-sphere and glow enabled.  Then we toyed around with the settings to get the light to the right size.  What do you recommend we do that is better?  We'd really like to know!

What does "scene ambient" do?

In my experience, Light sphere is all you need because glow is generated after the rendering, so it doesn't matter how far the light is, the glow is the same size, which doesn't make sense if you're moving closer or away from a light and the size of the glow doesn't change.  As for the light sphere, increase the realistic percentage.

The ambient is how the scene looks where there is no lights, i.e. shadows.  If it's a well lit scene or in the daylight, you'd want to still see the colors and details of objects in shadow.  If it's at night, you want dark shadows and you don't see as much details.  In space, the nearest light source is a sun or distant stars, so the ambient isn't as bright.

In your case, it's the default of 20% white light.  Click on Scene and go under Effects, you'll see the Ambient settings.

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

That was an awesome first attempt. But the laser blasts could go faster, like what Lech said.

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

Brilliant! Is LEOCad a free download? If so, i am immediately starting making my own fleet! If not i could always use lego digital designer...

Re: CGI Ship Fleet (WIP)

LEOCad+$0= mini/yes
