Topic: Space Ships WIPs

Hey there everyone! I just created a space ship in LDraw, and textured and arranged it in Blender, so here's the result!

More pictures will be coming up soon, from different angles and of different ships I'm making.

Re: Space Ships WIPs

If you haven't already, download the unofficial parts from Ldraw and add them to your MLCAD library, it'll expand your creativity.

Re: Space Ships WIPs

No, I don't think I have downloaded any of them at all. Off to LDraw!

Re: Space Ships WIPs

The render looks a bit weird IMO. You should try to make it more bricky.

Re: Space Ships WIPs

If the image displayed here looks a bit wierd, try clicking the link, the picture looks like it's suppose to there. More pictures will come out today after school and swim practice (a.k.a. in about 8 or 9 hours). Maybe I'll try some more textures...

those engines on the side should rotate up to land. mini/smile

Re: Space Ships WIPs

DOUBLE POST!!!

These pictures still look a bit wierd, so you can go to the link I listed previously and go to previous or next for them to be better looking.

Edit: Darn, you beat me to it Real Brick!

Re: Space Ships WIPs

The problem for me is the fact that from the top, there's no gap between the bricks, making it look unnatural. this may be difficult to change, but it just looks wrong to me. Other than that, the render looks quite good, though I don't particularly like the design of the ship.

Re: Space Ships WIPs

Well, at least then you won't hate my next small ship I'm making (way smaller than this one). The design is way different.

That's assuming that we, the CGI animator, want to make it look "natural" like an actual LEGO brick.

Re: Space Ships WIPs

Actually, that's fairly easy to fix. All you should need to do is add a bevel to it, and shorten certain sides if needed. I'm taking a break from my mini-figure, so I've got time to try and get the bricks a little more "natural looking". I'll need bricks for my mini-figure anyway.

I agree with CheesyBricks in that I don't like the design of the ship; it looks too simplistic to me, and not in a good way.

Re: Space Ships WIPs

on the slopes, add a rough texture if possible, it'l make them look more natural. Also, if you want to waste a lot of time, make a raised LEGO on the top of each stud.

mini/eek  Do you know how much time that would take to put the LEGO on the top of each stud?!?!

Re: Space Ships WIPs

You could cheat and use bump maps.

Re: Space Ships WIPs

That's cheating though, and even though I think I've used bump maps before, I'm not completely clear on how, so I'll stick with this way.

Now think about it, if you are going to actually create polygons just for the logo, imagine how many studs you have to apply the same set of polygons.  That's additional point values added to the model, which means a larger file to load and save.  Bump maps are used to make things easier.

Bump maps involves an image file in black and white (and all the grays in between).  For a LEGO logo, if you want the logo to look like it's bumping up out of the stud, create an image with the LEGO text in white over a black background.  Vice versa if you want the text indented into the stud.

Re: Space Ships WIPs

Wait, I think you can use the noise button in Blender. But also, you have to subdivide the object LOTS of times in order to make it look real.

And I'm not planning on making a little LEGO word on each stud. mini/tongue

Re: Space Ships WIPs

Just to add to the comments that the model seems simplistic, what I've done is look at concept space ship designs on the internet.

One of my main sources is conceptships.blogspot.com

Re: Space Ships WIPs

Yes, it is VERY simple, seeing as it's my first one.
