Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

I would clarify that "something that's never been done before" is maybe not the best way of looking at it.  That is such an impossible order that I think a better way of looking at it might be putting ideas together in a new and unique way, to create a finished product that is, at least in some ways, highly original and "cutting-edge."

What about my question of video format?

This contest it looking for something different - something that's never been done before. Try again.

How about, a film where the people of 2009 fight against the people of 2664? And one detective has to end this mystery once and for all.

The Gay Alien series is on its way, don't worry. mini/smile

Whoops, missed that.

I have an idea, but it would require the entry to be viewed in a special flash player online, which doesn't fit with the submission methods listed. Someone said though that a java game type entry would be allowed, mine wouldn't be a game, but it just needs to be viewed specially.
I'm just wondering if that is OK.

Yes, that would be acceptable, we're willing to put up with quite a bit in terms of unusual formatting, as needed, given the nature of this contest.  As long as it's not too difficult to view and not public before the YouTube start time it'll be fine.

Read some of the earlier posts in this thread about the term "avant-garde". While it does imply creativity in a general sense, you should try to make something that is radically different, in the literal sense of the word; the Latin radix means "root". The ideas you've been suggesting aren't anything new in that regard, since they all fit into a very traditional mold; there is a conflict that needs to be resolved, the film tells a linear story, etc.

If you look at avant-garde cinema, you'll find that it approaches the medium of film in a radically different way. Here are some examples.

Un Chien Andalou (Luis Buñuel, 1929)
Ritual in Transfigured Time (Maya Deren, 1946)
Mothlight (Stan Brakhage, 1963)
Mirror (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1975)
Stomach Song (William Wegman)
The Celebration (Thomas Vinterberg, 1998)

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

Smeogol, if the main character is a minifig, and he is animated in stop motion, it is ok if the rest of the set is not?

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

How 'bout something like a POV (Point Of View)? I've never seen any Brickfilm like that. Would that do? mini/blankexpression
Doesn't matter.

So, you mean that idea also wasn't avant-garde?:(

What about a Half-Life 2 brickfilm mini/bigsmile
No, that's actually what I want to do, as it's all I'll be able to do!

None of those ideas really fit the theme.

I can't say I actually enjoyed any of those. Given the vintage and today's popularity of the gene I'm probably not alone.
The only one I was aware of was Un Chien Andalou because of Dali's involvement and of course the cloud cutting the moon scene.
I might still have a crack at this if time permits (very busy work year for me), but I have a cunning plan.

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

Mirror is one of my favorite films, but it's probably better to see the entire film. The Celebration is pretty straightforward in terms of its script, but it's unconventional for being shot entirely on camcorders.

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

Hmm, I may try this, more for an excuse to do some random arse animating for like a month until I get an idea I like.
