thanks! $350 is a little expensive for my amateur-ish purposes and i would prefer to use the money on sets. but thanks for your help i will look into it!
You could use Gimp.
oh the photo-edit software? i will look into that
Well, gimp and photoshop work, but you can do it in Final Cut Express, which is an excellent little video editing tool. I haven't actually done it yet, and its harder than in programs like LSMaker or After Effects, but it works, and is a bit faster than in a photo editing software. It is a bit tricky to get used to at first though, and you would need gimp to make the basic blade first, on a black background.
thank you all for your suggestions, i think I will use gimp. it is free and seems reccomended by many.
Yes, but the process is long. i don't care for the video tutorials- so i recommend this one:

Note- When you use the Gaussian blur on a frame with big resolution- I'd turn it up to around 50 for the 5, 100 for the 20, and 150 for the 40. If you know what i mean- because this will create a bigger lightsaber glare, as seen in this photo (1280 x 720 res.)

gah! the one in the tutorial looks so awesome! thanks guys!
But be careful if yours does not turn out that way- That photo is a smaller resolution.
*bump* I did it! gimp had a glitch but I finally fixed it!
You should do a tutorial. I cannot make a lightsaber in Gimp.
