Topic: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

http://brickjournal.com/images/banner.logo.jpg

I'm working with Joe Meno, editor of BrickJournal magazine, on an issue all about LEGO animation. The issue is set to be released in early 2011.

Here are some of the article concepts we have in progress:

  • How to do LEGO stop-motion

  • LEGO animation: an Abridged History

  • BricksInMotion.com/the online LEGO animation community

  • The LEGO Studios MovieMaking Contest - 10 years later

  • You can build: LEGO animation puppet

My question to all of YOU is, what other kinds of content would you like to see in such an issue? Articles, interviews, features, building instructions, etc? Let me know. Thanks!

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

The fall of BF has to be included. An interview with a well-known animator (Smeagol, Mindgame, Nathan Wells, YOU, etc) would be cool. There's going to be a contest? Sweet! Tips 'n' stuff would be nice (and greatly appreciated, I'll bet). Screenshots and other examples of some work from our community should be there. I have to get this issue! Hope I helped!

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

Discussing the fall of BF is NOT a good idea. Why would we want to spend a chance like this memorializing internet drama? It's also not a great way to represent ourselves to the rest of the AFOL community.

Also, goldencamera, he's referring to a contest that took place in the past.

It might be interesting to discuss the evolution of LEGO's emphasis on brickfilming, i.e. the progression from having a line of sets, to a few contests, to a crappy third-party camera, etc.

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

I would think a few examples of good brickfilms would be a nice touch.

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

Yeah, don't forget to mention how serious brickfilming can be, and what measures people take to make it amazing- mention Unrenewable. Greenscreen, editing, effects, own music, community voices, etc.

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

I agree with DerTarchin, have a list of films to check out on Youtube, as well as a list of brickfilmers (Smegol, Hazzat, and not to mention Pagonomation mini/wink ). Also, if you could have pictures of how you animate. As well, have discounted copies available in the BiM shop. mini/smile

Living Lego, they aren't going to discount stuff for us because he have a membership on the site, then anyone could just sign up to get a discount, then leave.

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

In the past, I think brickfilms has been glorified a lot more than BiM.  Probably because it came way after BF but just to be clear this website's name should be on the title of the issue.  Also, you should probably interview Smeagol or some other famous brickfilmer and put it on there.

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

Madlibs makes a good point. BricksinMotion just doesn't have the same name recognition that Brickfilms.com did (and still does). It'd be great to get greater exposure to a more adult audience here.

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

Is this going to be printed, or online?

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

BrickJournal is both. It's often even available in LEGO Brand Stores.

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

Just an idea, but maybe you could discuss the FOS, and maybe some of the entries (which will be out quite soon).  That way, people would learn a little bit about some brickfilmers, brickfilms, and brickfilm competitions.  Just a suggestion though.

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

It'd be cool to have some interviews with brickfilmers (great opportunity and exposure mini/bigsmile ). There could also be a section about the 2011 BiM Contest, maybe the BiM Awards as well? I'm just throwing ideas out there, I look forward to this!

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

I can say pretty certainly that we won't be discussing the Brickfilms/Bricks In Motion falling out; as was said, in terms of giving readers an eye into the LEGO animation community, it's kind of a moot topic. Doesn't tell anyone about who we are or what we do.

TLG's tie-ins to brickfilming is an interesting idea, and I've checked in with Joe Meno to see if we could perhaps get interviews with the designers of the LEGO Studios sets.

Smeagol is contributing to the issue, and I believe will be writing an article about BiM and the online community here.

As for selling copies in the BiM store... I don't know about discounts, but it's not a bad idea. I'll look into it.

Thanks for the input, all! If you've got other ideas, keep 'em coming.

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

There should be an article on how to make a brickfilm and the general standards of animation. That way, if people who buy the magazine are interested in brickfilming after reading the other articles, they will have some instructions and advice on how to make their own brickfilm. mini/smile

Another idea is to feature a timeline of significant brickfilms (i.e. The Magic Portal, Star Wars: The Great Disturbance, America: Outlawed, etc.). If you want, you can also mention my most popular brickfilm, Johnny Thunder and the Secret of Marco Polo. True, it wasn't recieved very well on this site, but I consider it significant because, between August 23, 2008 and January 7, 2010, it was the longest brickfilm in existance that I'm aware of (The Ice Storm now holds that honor).

Take them or leave them, these are just a couple ideas I had.

Re: BrickJournal #14 - LEGO animation issue

I think you should try getting in touch with some past brickfilmers who have gone on to get degrees/jobs in animation, and talk with them about how brickfilming, the art and the community, helped them get to where they are now. Also, maybe you could have an article or two about set design, covering stuff like "don't build what the camera doesn't see."

I wouldn't write anything about the "standards of animation," though, if it's what I think it means. Too much of the focus now is on technical aspects, and not on bringing the gag/skit/story to it's fullest potential.

I was about to say "Welcome to BiM," but then I realized you're a Member. Shame on you, you should know better.
