Topic: Filming with Super 8

I'm really starting to consider buying a super 8 camera and starting to film on that. I've found a company in the UK that offer processing and digital transfers. Now I have never used film before when making films but I have been wanting to for sometime, have any of you lovely people used film for making movies before? As I am completely new to this what sort of stuff do I need to know?

My plan is to make use of the gorgeous look of the film and make a western which I think I'll start writing soon.

I should also point out in case I've been misleading. I'd be using this for live-action not animating but if anyone has any queries about super 8 in animation then by all means use this topic to ask those questions, it's not just about me.

Re: Filming with Super 8

Update: I'm seriously considering buying this. Watched a lot of films made with it and it looks really good, if I buy this I'll have to choose what film I want to use then. I'm still thinking about that.

Re: Filming with Super 8

Same idea here. Super 8 would look superb. Thinking about it for a few years now. Do it! So I have a motivation to do it, too mini/smile

Also there are some old german Super 8 brickfilms

The guy showed his films  and played his guitar  to them. A good connection to the old silent film age.

Re: Filming with Super 8

I thought there were some super 8 brickfilms. I think there is much more.

Also Blue Ghost PM'd me in relation to this topic he seems pretty knowledgeable on the subject of Super 8. I'm hoping he'd post what he wrote to me here.

Re: Filming with Super 8

That camera looks like a really good bet; I've heard great things about it. I've shot some b/w live-action footage (Kodak Tri-X 200 and Plus-X 100) and it looks pretty fabulous. Feel free to ask questions.

Re: Filming with Super 8

Well I've bidded, one and a half days to go. Then once I get that I'll begin a search for some batteries, then I'll get some of the cheapest film to do some tests in the future. I have two film ideas which I'd like to use to utilise the super 8 film format.

Night I think you showed me before but could we see the footage again?

Re: Filming with Super 8

I haven't gotten in digitized yet; I think I'll do that in a month or so.

Actually, I was just relaying some of the information that Night Owl had given to me, haha. I think you can buy Super 8 film either in a reel-type thing, becoming rare now, or in a cartridge, which is a lot easier to get ahold of. If you are looking for film, try checking out this page, it has descriptions of each type of film so you can match it to what kind of shooting you will be doing.

I'd definitely do some test shots before going ahead and putting a lot of work into a film, and if you can somehow develop it yourself, that would make it so your only cost would be digital conversion.

Re: Filming with Super 8

Well I won the bid for the Canon 814. My journey to Super 8 has begun.

Re: Filming with Super 8

That's excellent; it's a great camera.

Re: Filming with Super 8

My camera has completed it's journey from Canada and is now in my house! My next move is to buy film and plan a short film.

Re: Filming with Super 8

Bumped, as an interesting and relevant topic.

I recently shot a Super 8 test reel, you can watch a segment of it here. It lost a bit
of the color depth and image quality during the transfer.

Re: Filming with Super 8

Nice I loved how the sky keeps changing from blue to orange.

I'm going to buy some film soon so I can try out my camera but need to read up different film and stuff first so I know what I'm getting.

Re: Filming with Super 8

I'm considering getting one. That test reel was fantastic Blue Ghost.

Re: Filming with Super 8

Just bought some film so I hope to be filming within the month, going to plan a short spaghetti western kinda thing.

Re: Filming with Super 8

I wanna see super 8.
Directed by JJ abrams, it should be good.

Re: Filming with Super 8

Does it have anything to do with Super 8 filming? I've not read into that film.

Re: Filming with Super 8

... IMDB reveals nothing.

Re: Filming with Super 8

The trailer doesn't seem to give much other than it's late 70s. I should have my film soon, planning a short spaghetti western homage/sketch. Hopefully the look and style of Super 8 will make it feel like it's from the 60s 70s. One of my plans for when I film with film is that I won't contain anything in shot that is new i.e. something manufactured from after the 70s. I want my film to look like it is from that time.

Re: Filming with Super 8

That sounds awesome.
On a side note, I'm pretty sure that All of the Dead was done with Super 8.
