Re: Café Corner

I was just wondering; do you think it would be better if I changed my username to LOTW Studios?

Re: Café Corner

There's no precise science to boosting views. It's impossible to tell with absolute certainty whether something will be a hit in a market as broad and weird as teh interwebs.

While I appreciate the sentiment of "make good content, people know what they want", that only goes so far, as the vast majority of content that is most popular on a forum like YouTube is poorly-produced, or just 'pap' (when I say pap, I refer to the meat, poison and pap argument, that pap is acceptable content designed to appeal to as many demographics as possible). I'm not saying there's anything wrong with "let's play" channels like PewDiePie, as I understand people enjoy watching them, but few are actually well-made, and individual episodes certainly won't be remembered with clarity in even a year's time. Even within brickfilming, there are YouTube channels where the animations are not particularly (or even remotely, in some cases) well-made, but click-bait titles and thumbnails and appealing to wider demographics (most often at the cost of a decline in quality) mean they may have tens of thousands of subscribers, or several million views.

Now, I like getting my animations seen as much as the next guy, but you can't let the desire for success control you. Yeah, it's wonderful if one of your videos goes viral, and you should celebrate that kind of achievement, but if you go into brickfilming expecting to be ForrestFire101 or AkashLegoProductions then it's fairly likely you're not going to enjoy the hobby.

I guess what I want to say is make the animations that you want to make, and be pleasantly surprised when it gets 1000, 10,000, or 100,000 views. Because unless you're already at the top, which takes a lot of time (if not effort, debatable) the person who is going to get the most satisfaction out of the end result of that project you've been working on is you.

But as a side note, don't forget the power of social media. You might not become massive from it, but using Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr etc to spread the word about your work will help. Again, don't expect it to make you the Prince of YouTube, but it will get you on the slow road to being more widely noticed.

Do you think [reddit]'s an effective way for boosting YouTube views?

The only videos I've made that have ever received any attention on reddit were the BIONICLE animations I made last year, because the fan community was already quite open to that kind of thing. When I posted some of my Marvel stuff in a Marvel subreddit, however, I think it only got one or two upvotes. The difference is that the bigger the subreddit community, the wider the spectrum of content people talk about; with brickfilms being so niche, you're unlikely to get noticed unless it's a brickfilming subreddit (but if you're going to post it there, why go to the effort at all when you can just post to BiM?).

EDIT: Max's next post is basically what I was trying to say but more succinct. He speaks wisdom.

Re: Café Corner

Sucess these days is completely accidental. Just do what you enjoy doing, and therefore if it doesn't work out then you haven't wasted your time because you've at least had fun.

This being said, sharing your content on social media and interacting with other people making similar content is a reliable way to inject at least a few more views. I wouldn't make anything just for the sake of catering to a niche audience, but if your work does appeal to a niche audience then definitely exploit this.

I tried the whole 'kidnap and force to watch' thing, but my films are so bad that no-one ever survives this process...

Re: Café Corner

In the nine months I've had my YouTube channel, I've gained 11 subscribers, most of them are from America and other countries thousands of miles away. They are complete strangers who enjoyed my films so much, they want to see more. When I make films, I should be making them for them. Besides, I now have over 1,300 lifetime views. Imagine that many people, It's quite amazing when you think about it.

Re: Café Corner

I believe it is not about the views at all. If you are happy with the quality of work, then you have done your job. Each time I make a film, I aim to make it to a quality that I would be happy no just to show on Youtube, but to include in a portfolio for potentially future work in the film industry.

Re: Café Corner

Anybody going to Bricks by the Bay this year? I'll be at the public day on Sunday.

Re: Café Corner

I've never been, but I'm hoping to go in the next few years. Too busy this year, though!

Re: Café Corner

I'm going on Saturday I think, but maybe I'll go Sunday.

Re: Café Corner

LPGPictures, are you registered for the full convention? I think if you're not, you can only go on Sunday. Unless I'm missing something.

Re: Café Corner

Hey, is there a guide anywhere on understanding how to get good picture quality from my QCP9K? I've been Brickfilming for years but always neglected my camera setup. I'd really like to learn how to get a good, non-grainy image.

Re: Café Corner

Has anyone else experienced the views of your YouTube videos to decrease? For weeks one of my films had been over 200 views, it was nearly 300, now I check a second ago, that very same film has a meagre 68 views!

Re: Café Corner

@William, check your settings to make sure you are looking at lifetime views and not just the last 30 days or something like that.

@Brickyman, Suburb Animation Studios made this helpful guide a while ago.

No I'm not, you're correct. I could have sworn I went Saturday last year, and in addition its a week earlier than I thought. Hopefully I can rearrange my schedule and go anyway, on Sunday.

My lifetime views are fine, that keeps going up. It's just a couple of my films that are going wrong!

I'd recommend worrying less about views, and in addition check out YouTube support forums as well, they are more certainly more experienced in such areas. But of course before all of that remember Google is your friend.

Yeah, that'd be cool. Maybe I'll see you there.

I'll be bringing a couple of my kids on Sunday.  Last year someone gave us some convention tickets that they didn't end up using so I got to go Saturday.  I heard John of BuilderBrothers Studios' talk on animation and met David Pagano.  It was so much fun!

I know John will be giving a talk this year too, so you guys will be able to meet him on public day at his display.  I hope to see you other brickfilmers who are going too (It will be nice seeing you again Twickabrick!). mini/smile
