Burn After Reading

You have got to be kidding me. I've never seen the film, but here are sentences from reviews about it on RottenTomatoes.

"A bunch of pieces in search of a puzzle. "
"Unlikable characters who do stupid things."
"...thoroughly pointless..."
"It's like a spy thriller, but with no spies and no thrills. "
"Big stars act like darn fools..."

Admittedly, I've seen good ratings for the film, but nothing seems to make me actually want to spend the time to go see it, much less call it one of the best films of the year.

Re: Favorite Films of 2008

My parents watched Burn After Reading, they fell asleep after the first 20 minutes.

Re: Favorite Films of 2008

Burn After Reading is probably the worst film I've ever seen.

My point proved.

It's too bad that maggosh deleted his post in this thread. It was really insightful.

Pfft. Yeah, as insightful as Burn After Reading.

No, I found the sarcasm charming, and the logic surprisingly strong

But yes, it was an idiotic post, and you saved yourself some amount of embarrassment by deleting it.

Re: Favorite Films of 2008

I have to agree with Matt. People like different things. Just because critics didn't like the film doesn't mean I won't. I may hate it, but really, I think you should give it the benefit of a doubt.

Re: Favorite Films of 2008

Ghost Town was a very enjoyably film.I loved it,and The Dark Knight just blew me away.

Re: Favorite Films of 2008

Leonardo, the reviews for Burn After Reading weren't so bad. I'm surprised you reacted so strongly. I thought it was good, albeit nowhere near the quality of Fargo or Raising Arizona.

Admittedly, it's not a perfect film, but I rather enjoyed it. And I would disagree with the critics you quoted, namely that the film is not pointless (I found it insightful), and the line about "Unlikeable characters who do stupid things" doesn't really make sense to me. It's kind of the POINT of the film, really. (Are you supposed to LIKE Daniel Plainview in There Will be Blood or Jake Lamotta in Raging Bull? Yet the critics loved those films)

I would recommend giving it a shot, especially if you're a fan of the Coen Brothers.

Re: Favorite Films of 2008

Yeah, I haven't exactly had the chance to watch it, either.

Re: Favorite Films of 2008

Cinexcellence, I would argue, though, that you can only take unlikeable characters so far. Fargo, in my mind, is as good as it is because the character of Marge is so sympathetic.
