Re: What's Your Favorite Film Score?

I'm fond of John Ottman's score for X-Men 2.  Michael Giacchino's done some great stuff lately.  I loved Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings scores.

Some of John Williams's early work is pretty amazing.  I also enjoyed the score to Revenge of the Sith but a lot of his stuff is all starting to sound the same.  (Take secondary, underscore music from Star Wars Ep. III and Minority Report and it's difficult to tell which is which.)

My all-time favorite?

Back To the Future's score by Alan Silvestri.

Williams is a powerhouse. Hook had an amazing score.

Re: What's Your Favorite Film Score?

My favorite score would from The Empire Strikes Back. I love the snow battle, the asteroid field, all the stuff with Yoda and then there's the duel and escape to hypserspace. It's the one soundtrack that I listen to along with my non soundtrack music.

Re: What's Your Favorite Film Score?

A Clockwork Orange.

Yep.

Re: What's Your Favorite Film Score?

I like this thread.

I loved Nicholas Hooper's take on the Harry Potter theme on the fifth movie soundtrack. I'm not such a fan of John Williams, but I still think made the perfect theme for that character, as he does for everything. His tracks just get a little too boring for me sometimes. mini/tongue
I'm a huge Danny Elfman fan, just like the rest of the world, I possibly like everything he's done.
Although I think Batman (1989) and Mars Attacks! are two of his best.
The theme for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is also one of my favorites! WALL-E also.
Alexandre Desplat's theme for Syriana makes me cry everytime. Birth is great too.
I have a lot of favorites, it's not possible for me to have just one.

Re: What's Your Favorite Film Score?

I like the scores in Equilibrium, Back to the Future, The Dark Knight and The Terminator.

Re: What's Your Favorite Film Score?

8 Mile by Eminem. I can only remember "Lose Yourself", which is very much very powerful.

Lord of the Rings by Howard Shore; really improves enhances the alreadys great visuals. Watching the DVD making of makes you appreciate the process the deadlines. Shore`s Existenz is less memorable yet wicked odd.

Spirited Away by Joe Hisaishi; mysterious energetic animated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirited_Away

Re: What's Your Favorite Film Score?

I'm disappointed that barely anyone has mentioned scores that aren't contemporary or  orchestral. mini/blankexpression
Some of my favorites:

Days of Heaven and Once Upon A Time in America (Ennio Morricone)

Aguirre: The Wrath of God (Popol Vuh)

There Will Be Blood (Jonny Greenwood)

The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Nick Cave and Warren Ellis)

American Beauty (Thomas Newman)

Fargo, Miller's Crossing, and Barton Fink (Carter Burwell)

Koyaanisqatsi and Kundun (Philip Glass)

The Godfather (Nino Rota)

Hawk the Slayer (Harry Robertson)

Am I the only person who dearly wants Hans Zimmer to disappear off the face of the earth?

Re: What's Your Favorite Film Score?

I think you must be! What's so bad about him? Pirates of the Caribbean, Dark Knight were awesome scores. Plus he's done some other cool stuff as well.  Rain Man, True Romance and As Good At It Gets are nice soundtracks...

I like:

American Beauty - Thomas Newman

True Romance - Hans Zimmer

Slumdog Millionaire - AR Rahman (it's seriously amazing!)

Beetlejuice - Danny Elfman

Men In Black - Danny Elfman (that theme is awesome!)

28 Days Later - John Murphy (very experimental)

Once Upon a Time In Mexico and Planet Terror - Robert Rodriquez

Blade Runner - Vangelis (some of the synth stuff is nice)

And the action-y stuff in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace - David Arnold and The Bourne stuff - John Powell. is quite good.

Misirlou from Pulp Fiction, Little Green Bag from Reservoir dogs are other non-composed film scores I like. Plus all the electro stuff from Trainspotting. mini/smile

Re: What's Your Favorite Film Score?

It's true that Hans Zimmer is capable of scoring a film, but I find everything he does to be ridiculously monotonous. When he occasionally breaks free of the bombastic chords + four-beat percussion mold, it's not half as bad, but I can't help thinking that he seriously lacks creativity.
