Topic: Canon Powershot SX170 IS 4K Animation Test

This is a short little test I did with my Johnny Thunder minifig in front of a makeshift wall mimicing the "A" symbol featured in Atlantis: The Lost Empire. All other info is in the description of the video, here:

4k Video Test

I haven't ever had the ability to shoot in 4k resolution until now, and, I've got to say, I'm impressed. Everything is just so much more crisp and clear. I'll be sure to stick with this camera for a while! mini/smile

But it's not in 4K

Re: Canon Powershot SX170 IS 4K Animation Test

Very nice. My only critique would be that the overlay Johnny Thunder doesn't line up with the background camera movement, though, it looked nice anyway. (I just noticed a small hole in Johnny's arm where the blue/green screen ate through it. I thought I'd let you know if you didn't already see it. mini/wink )

May I ask why he is carrying a lantern and a fencing sword? I'm sure it has something to do with your film, but the Johnny Thunder I know is too proud to carry any tools besides his trusty gun! mini/tongue

I liked how the fencing stick wobbled when he turned. If you ever make a full video with the stick, make sure it always wobbles when doing quick turns because it adds a more realistic effect to it.

When I started to upload the original file in full 4k resolution, Youtube said that the upload would take several days on my connection... And, on top of that, a temporary power outage caused my internet connection to shut off during the upload...

Until I move to a place with better connection speeds (upwards of the 1-2 megabytes per second that I have now), I'll have to limit all uploads to 1080p HD. mini/sad

IDK, I just like to ramp up the challenge of animating whenever I do break down and do a test film, as, I usually hate doing them. My last animation test had Superman flying down, and featured my first attempts at cape movement. And, since I'm a big Atlantis: The Lost Empire fan, I thought a backpack and lantern would fit nicely against the "A" letter recreation on the background wall. The fencing sword was just for the heck of it. mini/tongue

Actually, I didn't use any chroma keying at all! Here's the "original" over-the-shoulder shot of Johnny. It IS in 4k resolution, so, I hope that somewhat compensates for the lack of 4k-edness in the video for now. mini/tongue

It will be a while before any more Johnny Thunder footage comes from me, however. Currently I'm working on my "Sliders" series project, and, after that, will juggle Alpha Team and Adventurers films.

I also did a bit of a wobble on the lantern. I personally think that it turned out a bit better, but, to each his own. I'm glad I was able to bust out this test successfully before THAC. That's partially what prevented me from entering THAC 11 last year - My camera had technical difficulties, and, set me back too far to really finish anything.

This year, however, I think things should go over a lot better. Too bad I haven't found a way to remote capture the SX170 yet... On the test I had to manually touch the capture button every time, risking moving the camera!

If I still have problems with that, I'll post on the Software and Hardware thread. Otherwise, I might just have to get a new camera already! And, I'd like to avoid that as much as possible...

How large was the 4K file you rendered?

The original 4k film?

Well, it was over 2GB, and had a bitrate of 795,466kbps! It didn't play too well through windows media player or VLC player, so, I decided to re-render it at 1080p temporarily. I assume something went wrong in the rendering process both times, as, even the 1080p video had the same kbps rate... Then again, I've never tried to import 4k pics into Sony Vegas Movie Studio before.

From now on, I'll use the new editor I got for christmas - which is Pro, and actually can handle a 4k output file.

Re: Canon Powershot SX170 IS 4K Animation Test

Yeah sounds like you need to use better compression. My last film I uploaded in 4K and it was 30 seconds long. The total file size was 150 MB. 2 GB for that sounds like you rendered it a lossless.

Re: Canon Powershot SX170 IS 4K Animation Test

But that's just it, AquaMorph, I didn't render it lossless!

I guess my suspicions were right - it must have been something wrong with the Vegas. I'll experiment around with some more edits and test until THAC, just to make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen again.

Thanks for helping out. A 30 second 4K clip should be about 150MB with lossy compression. Got it.

2gb? That's a very big file for a short clip. Anyways the animation is pretty good, plus the camera quality as well.
