Re: What was the last movie you watched?

For Christmas, I got the Jurassic Park DVD box set. I had never seen these movies before, and when I watched the trailer for the upcoming Jurassic World, I had wanted to watch them.

Jurassic Park (1993)

And the first one is beautiful. It must have been a lot of fun to have seen this one in cinemas, upon its release, almost 22 years ago. Spielberg's masterful direction, John Williams' classic musical score, and the breathtaking CGI all help bring the dinosaurs to life.

9.8/10

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

No idea why the title is shaped like that. I know that the "sequel novel" is called "The Lost World", but that doesn't explain the backwards title. Anyways, the sequel is good, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original, even if they were able to get the same things that made the original the masterpiece it is.

8/10

Jurassic Park III (2001)

The third installment screams "straight-to-video"; it is an unnecessarily strange and strangely unnecessary entry into the franchise. It has some memorable moments, but this movie was doomed from the moment that the crew kicked Spielberg out of the director's chair.

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

This film seems to have received a lot of negative reviews all over the forum and the internet so I think its time somebody gave it some praise. Now I haven't read the book so I can't really pass comment on whether Jackson ruined Tolkien's great piece of prose (Although I hope to read the books given there is so much left out or changed). But anyway, down to business.

First of all Tauriel. Now I get it, she wasn't originally a character conceived by Tolkien, but in a male dominated story, I think it was refreshing to have a woman other than Galadriel. Also, the last instalment was far darker than any of the other films as it explored the theme of greed, it was grittier and felt how a lord of the rings film should feel in my opinion.

The battle scenes were exciting as well, and the CGI was amazing, and I don't think the film necessarily lacked climax, it's just the previous film had already done a lot of that. The film linked cleverly to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and ended well

That's not to say I thought the film was perfect. I think the biggest problem is that making the Hobbit as three films was a mistake, it should only have ever been split into two parts. Also

Legolas' fancy footwork kind of put me off for a bit when he ran over the crumbling masonry

But all in all I thought it was a fitting end to the series. I thought the credits and end song by Billy Boyd were also a tribute to Tolkien, Jackson and the world of Middle Earth that have entertained us for so long.

Saying that, As a big fan of the series I don't think there was anyway I could have come out of the cinema and not enjoyed it.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I only liked the first Jurassic Park movie.  MY friend who voices Mark Manchester told me #2 was great and we went together to watch it in the movies.  We kind of mst3k-ed it the whole time.  After we left, he says, "I don't know what I really saw in it the 1st time."  I just thought the plot was barely there.  I guess it's just me.

I'm really in the mood to pop in my Iron Giant DVD.  Maybe tonight.

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

I actually quite liked this film. Even though the film followed hardly any of the original story line, I found the film very enjoyable to watch. The music was very inspiring and accompanied the film perfectly, the CGI was impressive, and the stupid action sequences were quite amusing.

I know many people would disagree with me, but I'm giving it an 8/10.

The Descendants

Nothing to be said, this film was a masterpiece.

Rat Race

Right, the beginning and ending of this film absolutely sucks. The opening in the hotel introducing each character one-by-one is necessary, yet I'm sure there could've been a more interesting way. I was about to switch off when John Cleese's character shows up and things actually get funny. Then the race begins and things devolve into glorious madness.

It seems so simple, but the best comedies are those that cram as many jokes as possible into the action whilst pushing towards a larger goal. Once this movie gets going, the jokes all come flowing organically from the situations the characters are placed in. It's kinda depressing that these days only childrens films like The LEGO Movie seem to know this.

Of course, the movie trips and breaks it's neck at the end - with a ridiculously corny, out of nowhere plotpoint, and an extended celebrity cameo that I think was dated even before this movie came out. I reccomend this as a great Friday/Saturday-night film, but get it on DVD so you can skip the beginning and stop before the end.

Iron Giant.

Loved it.  The new WB animation studios released three movies int he 1990s: Quest For Cmaelot, The King and I, and Iron Giant.  I saw all of them in the theatre.  The Iron GIant is the only one worth watching.  In fact, it is leaps and bounds on another level of storytelling.  If you haven't seen this yet, give it a check.  You're in for a treat!

... and all that that implies.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

It's really sad that neither of my parents have ever heard of The Iron Giant. It's equally as sad that I'm unable to find a DVD copy anywhere, not even at a public library.

Bought it for $5 in the bargain bin at BestBuy. Best impulse buy ever.

Also, what's stopping you from getting it off of Amazon or eBay?

Oh, yes, the Iron Giant. That is a favorite for me. Right up there with the Tangerine Bear. (Ok, not really, the Tangerine Bear is in it's own category, but there's no denying that the Iron Giant is one of my favorites.

Kooky

Somehow my brother became cognizant of this film and we watched it and, wow, that was a real gem.  It was made in the Czech Republic and I had never seen a Czech film before.
Almost the entire film is done in a really weird style with tiny objects like dolls moving around I think with puppetry.  But it's executed so flawlessly that it looks like all of the things just got up and started moving around without any strange cgi look to it.  It's really cool that it takes place in a forest and you can see all the little details like the texture in the moss and little tiny beetles crawling over parts of the scene.
There are even a few scenes where they got animals like birds to interact with the characters, and it's really amazing.

I would recommend.

Pretty stupid movie. It was pretty funny, not worth all the hype though.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The Wind Rises
Got this along with other anime from family for Christmas, and I am over the moon!
This film is just like Hayao Miyazaki's other anime; amazing!
This came out last year in limited release, which was a shame, as it wasn't in any cinema's in the part of the country I live in, to see this is just wonderful!
The Wind Rises tells the fictional biographical story of Jiro Horikoshi, the creator of the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane, used by the Japanese Empire during World War II. Of course, this film doesn't solely focus on him just designing that plane, but instead, how he views the design of aircraft in his fantasy dreamland, and how they differ when they are created in the real world.
It focuses also on his personal life, with his wife taking this role. Although what happens in the film is completely different from what actually happened in real life, I felt this created much more character development for Jiro and his wife, Naoko Satomi.
10/10
Worth a watch, and a fine final film for Hayao Miyazaki!
In my opinion, The Wind Rises should have won the academy award for best animated feature instead of Frozen!

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

I have to say, this was really good. There were one or two parts that were out of place in my opinion, but over all it was great. Much more accurate to the book than Desolation of Smaug

Man of Steel

I have the exact opposite opinion on this film, it was really bad. I'm almost tempted to watch a film like the Avengers so I don't end the year with such a bad super hero film. The pacing was slow at parts and fast at parts, and the literal birth of Superman was not something I was expecting nor did I want to see. The film tried to explain everything, which is something I don't really like.

Into The Woods

This movie was very enjoyable. Almost every musical number made me want to sing and dance along gayly. mini/bigsmile Also, the movie brings together numerous fairy tales with all the characters from the different stories working off each other and poking fun at their stories and flaws. There's also a lot of satire of fairy tales, for example, there is a song number in which two princes sing together about princesses they are pursuing whilst they rip off their shirts. mini/lol

The cast is magnificent, with bonus points for Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp, and the story is a lot of fun and delivers its moral quite well, though the third act drags on for a bit and there are a few plotholes and unresolved plot points.

Definitely worth watching it, if only for a fun live action disney musical that doesn't take itself too seriously.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

A really fun and zany stopmotion-animated cartoon PRODUCED by Tim Burton and DIRECTED by Henry Selick, for those who are still confused about that. Really glad I finally got around to watching it, because I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone.

I could have walked out of the theater right then.  This movie is terrible.  The worst of this unfortunate trilogy.  Watching it was a chore.  I knew I had to go to all 3 of these movies, and now I'm glad they're over so I never have to think about them ever again.

The LEGO Movie
Finally got around to watching this last night, regretted waiting so long.  It was awesome.  Crazy.  I kept saying "what? why would they do that?!?!"  I loved it.  I'm very curious to know how they were able to use get/use permissions for so many iconic franchises (Batman, Superman, Star Wars, etc) in this one film.  Some kind of "advertising" loophole?  Whatever, I don't care that there was a sappy LEGO commercial under it all, it was awesome.

That particular moment of dialogue (and a few others) aside, I actually disagree - I think overall they've been pretty good. Not as good as LotR, but pretty good nonetheless.

Well Batman and Superman are both DC, so they appear together in the comics themselves on a regular basis anyway. Plus, it was made by Warner (who own DC), which also explains how Middle-earth characters can appear. Not sure Star Wars though.

Smokey and the Bandit (1977)

A hilarious, bawdy, funner-than-a-barrel-of-monkeys thrill ride. Definitely some of Jackie Gleason's best work; he stole the show.

The Blind Side (2009)

This 2009 Best Picture nominee tells the touching true story about the former NFL offensive tackle, Michael Oher. I would recommend this to anyone who has yet to tire of these "sappy sports movies". Still though, I enjoyed this movie.

Redline (2009)

OOooooooh yess. This movie is a freaking adrenaline rush! I went into this movie only knowing that it was about racing and that it's "the raddist". And it does live up to that description. It has some of the best animation that I've seen in a long time, it really gives you an awesome sense of speed. And the amazing sound track only helps up the intensity. While the story is SUPER thin, the movie is short and action packed enough for that not to be an issue. The official English Dub of the movie is available from the distributor on YouTube, so I highly recommend you check it out.

The Imitation Game

Another movie I went into only knowing the most basic things about, I really enjoyed this. Benedict Cucumberbatch gives a great performance as always, and the rest of the actors carry along the great story well enough to make this a easy recommendation.

The Interview

It wasn't that bad. I've heard a lot of people saying that this was a super terrible film, but it ended up being relatively close to what I had expected it to be before things got real real and even my 84 year old grandpa knew about this movie. Rogan and Franco do a good job, and the plot, while pretty predictable, is still enjoying to watch. If these types of movies are your thing, I say give it a try. If not, I wouldn't expect it to be anything grander than a weird Seth Rogan movie.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The Giver (2014)

This movie was under the radar this year.  I say it's the best movie you didn't see!  It's another in the genre of futuristic utopia where equality and perfection appears to have been achieved until someone discovers the society's true nature.  The theme is not original; I am reminded of every one of these movies/novels while watching: THX-1138, Gattica, The Wizard of Oz, Pleasantville (although that movie is utter garbage; Orson Scott Card, author of the novel Ender's Game called it the worst movie of 1998), Agenda 21, Futurama, 1984, and a few others that slipped my memory until I watch it again.  Despite all this, the movie is freshly original.  It's thought-provoking, not an action film of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" scope, but I loved it as much.  I'm also a huge fan of George Lucas' iconic THX-1138, the movie this most closely resembles.  The Giver is ten times better.

The cinematography is beautiful.  Not even considering the symbolic use of color and lack of color, The Giver is a work of art, as is the world where the story takes place.

The movie is also very relevant today.  Though the novel it is derived was written in the 1990s,

Spoiler (click to read)

The Giver is a warning against achieving perfection and "equality" by eliminating the "Unequal".  And there's no better time than now to warn us.  The story's society acts under the pretense that it eliminated the evil horrors of crimes against man.  Yet, as in all socialist societies, its solution is more inhumane than the world it purported to eradicate.

The actors, many who are young fresh faces, were well-directed, and even Taylor Swift makes an appearance, a surprise to me!  In summary: The Giver has some action but nowhere near "Guardians of the Galaxy", is just as good, thought-provoking, and more satisfying than THX-1138.  Recommended.
