Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho

Watched this movie in my English class. I loved the soundtrack, and the film was very suspenseful and scary, and had a lot of cool stuff to it. I'm not a suspense or horror film fan in general, but this movie was good.

For how high it's regarded in the film world and it's placement on the AFI list, I expected a lot more out of that film. It was good and I enjoyed it, but it didn't quite meet expectations in my eyes. I found the story a bit too long and the characters a bit too flat and wooden. Don't get me wrong, it's a good film, just don't expect it to blow your mind.

That's my take, at least.

I know it's just a matter of opinion but... flat and wooden? How can those characters appear flat and wooden?

Anyway, since I'm here:

Clockwork Orange

Has some very disturbing scenes, and they're very effective. Malcolm McDowell is terrific and terrifying. I can't really think of anything negative, except that maybe in a few parts the violence actually appears glorified rather than criticized.

Crumb
This is a documentary that everyone should see. It's about Robert Crumb, a famous cartoonist of underground comix, and part of his family. I had already seen it, but I wanted to see it again. Definitely one of my favourite movies.

I am so glad that there are other people who like this as much as I do. I haven't seen it in a while because lost the VHS but I remember loving it. Have you seen A Gay Purr-ee or Brave Little Toaster?

All of them...

The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)

Not too sure what to say about this film. It's good, for a Jerry Bruckheimer film (with Nic Cage as Exec. Producer, might I add). And I gotta give it to them for making surprisingly good CGI and VFX.

But, there's just something about the film that irks me--and its not just the product placement.

Once again, the film was OK. And Toby Kebbell is a brilliant actor, but I don't think I've seen anything else with him in it. However, there's just some aspect of this film that bothered me.

Also, the ending was weaksauce...France? Really?! Anyways, it's--overall--a very well done film. Great job, Turtletaub.

Finding a Family (a really low-budget 2011 Hallmark Channel TV film)

Not bad. I mean, the film crew squeezes out all the juice they can. But no matter what, it's still gonna be a "cute little" teen drama film.

Picture Perfect
A fun family film. It's a pretty easy plot to figure out, and the acting has its bad moments, but it would be fun for a family movie night.

I also saw about half of SW: Episode II, but I didn't really like it. mini/tongue

Goodfellas

Excellent. I particularly loved the sets, the acting, and the dialogue; and there was a lot of scenes that were just fantastically executed as a whole, especially the death scenes. My only complaint is that the ending felt a taaaaaad rushed IMO, but it didn't really detract from the rest of the film.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

OK, I'm gonna go ahead and say it...is it really all its cracked up to be? I mean, it's not all as good as The Dark Knight...so its one of those instances where the middle film is better. How 'bout that?

The acting was spot-on, especially by Jo-Go-Le (my nickname for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, if you were wondering), which actually came as a surprise to me. The 2 Nolans and Goyer have really cooked up a good screenplay, brilliantly accompanied by Zimmer's ever-fantastic musical score.

However, I found that the trailers and the spoofs conveyed Bane's voice falsely. I don't know about everyone else, but I could understand him fine. His voice was clear as a bell to me; but I dunno. Maybe that's just me. By the way, the majority of Bane's lines were really good, and Tom Hardy acted well. But one of them--

"You'll just have to imagine the fire."

Eh? mini/eh What does that even mean? I couldn't help but...well, you know...laugh a little. Plus, Bane's just not--in my opinion--a very interesting villain. Just destroying Gotham City? I mean, why can't his scheme be a little more intricate than that? mini/confused Like the Joker was a fun villain. He was so lively and almost funny in parts. But, Bane's just...kind of lame. Even Ra's al Ghul was much more interesting of an antagonist than Bane--oh, and by the way...I saw the plot twist coming a mile away.

Oh, and one more thing--Doritos product placement during the stadium scene. mini/blankexpression

But, Rises was real good, for a final installment. Just, not as good as The Dark Knight. Hmm...I think it's time to listen to the motion picture soundtrack again!

P.S. I hope you guys weren't too mad when this film didn't receive any nominations last January. The only reason The Dark Knight earned an OSCAR was because Heath edger died. I wish you guys wouldn't have gotten your hopes up.

That's kinda weird, I watched the Dark Knight Rises as well today...

They changed his voice due to complaints when an 8-minute preview of the movie was shown preceding one movie in theaters (I can't remember which one). A before-and-after can be seen here.

But one of them--

"You'll just have to imagine the fire."

It's a reference to a previous line:

At least it was in the background for one or two shots and not as blatant and in-your-face as some superhero movies in the past year...

The only reason The Dark Knight earned an OSCAR was because Heath Ledger died.

While I can't deny that his death increased the chance of TDK getting the Oscar, it won because...I dunno...it's one of the greatest films of all time. Ledger's performance was worthy of an Oscar regardless of his death.

Magic Trip: Ken Kesey's Search for a Kool Place

This, in my opinion, is one of the best documentaries for one reason only: It was being documented while it was happening. It was in the moment, had non-religious, religious views (if that makes sense), and spoke about the spirit of the true American.

YES! YES! I'M NOT GOING INSANE! ANOTHER PERSON SHARES MY OPINION!

I never, ever got Bane's motivation. He reminded me of Ulimecia from Final Fantasy 8, who wanted to destroy the entire universe including herself for...um...kicks?

This pretty much describes The Joker, and nobody ever complains about his motivation.  Also, from what I understood, Bane wanted to destroy Gotham (i.e. finish what Ra's Al Ghul and the League of Shadows had started) and perhaps get revenge on Batman.  I personally don't find him as good as The Joker, but he's still a great villain nonetheless.

Either way, though, I'll never see TDKR in the same way again after watching this...

That's why people enjoy the Joker. He has no motivation other than chaos. He seeks to overthrow Control and do anything contrary to the views of the "Establishment". It's a very Anarcho-Skeptic view.

Honestly, I think the Joker's motivation isn't just chaos. I think he sees himself as more of a liberator. The only one who can free society from average social convention in order to reach the true essence of humanity. He sees the government (or Establishment) as a phony, crude product of mankind's flawed need for Control.  The Joker seeks to tear down this front and introduce mankind to their true nature of chaos. Sadly, the Establishment prevails and the Joker's only true believer is thrown from a roof.

Sad movie.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey EE
Hmmm...Some of the extra scenes are great, and I mean GREAT.
Others...Not quite so much.

Spoiler (click to read)

Bathing dwarves and the Goblin King's song fall squarely in the latter, Bofir's song added nothing, but took away nothing, and the rest was generally quite good.

I haven't delved into the extras yet, but as of now, I'd have to say that the extended scenes don't improve things near as much as the ones for LOTR. That being said, I did mostly buy the DVD for the extras, so I'm sure I'll get my money's worth. If you own the Theatrical, and don't care about behind the scenes, I wouldn't spend even more of your money. But if you don't own it yet, get the EE.

The whole point of the Joker is that he has no motivation. He's just completely insane, and he's terrifying because you have no idea what he'll do next - although Nolan tried to add in some pretentious message about the evil spirit of man, but kinda failed, so everyone just enjoys the Joker as a crazed nutball.

Bane actually had a motivation...it just made absolutely no sense at all. He wanted to destroy Gotham when there was no need to because Gotham wasn't a hellhole anymore. He wanted to prove that he could corrupt Gotham again by releasing all the prisoners...which is kinda obvious - that's why we have prisons. He wanted to break Gotham's spirit by threatening to blow everyone up, but he's going to blow everyone up anyway...including himself. He tried to make Bruce Wayne bankrupt and a wreck when he's already going bankrupt and is moaping everywhere. He wanted to get rid of Batman by putting him in the most easy to escape from prison ever. And of course, in the end it turned out that Bane was just a henchman anyway...and upon that revelation Bane just says "screw it" and tries to kill him - reducing him to nothing but a Bond villan who should have just shot Batman so he couldn't return later to ruin his diabolical plan.

Bane is like a Doctor Who finale in how whenever I try to work out the logic behind it, my brain hurts and I get annoyed because I'm clearly thinking about it more than Moffat/Nolan did.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

My problem with the Dark Knight Rises was that the whole things about whether Gotham deserves saving. Batman says yes, Bane says no. And other than a few people doing their jobs, none of the people of Gotham actually show that they are worth saving.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Yeah, in The Dark Knight they had those two ships that in the end didn't blow each-other up - thus proving that there is at least a handful of good people in Gotham. The Dark Knight Rises is a much more cynical film, which doesn't really work because its cynicism kinda contradicts the whole idea of Batman. It's like Batman Returns, only with even less redeeming qualities.

Actually, the plot to The Dark Knight Rises is sort of a rip-off-of V For Vendetta, only that novel was a critique of Thatcherism, and V was supposed to be a hero (a chaotic, anarchic hero, but utlimately a hero) And yes, Christopher Nolan cannot hope to match Alan Moore in terms of complexity and ambiguity.
