Topic: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

Please can we drop the time limit on the consecutive posts settings.
Some of us only have a short amount of time to dip into the forum and out again and having to wait a minute between posting one topic and then being allowed to post on another is very annoying.

I am sure a much shorted time limit would still work to prevent spambots etc.

Please can this be sorted.

Re: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

The time limit is to make sure that nobody spams up the forums, sure.  But it's also there to make sure that people construct well thought out and well-worded responses.  If it takes you less than a minute to think up what you're going to post, then it's really not worth saying.

I support the time limit.  There have been countless times when I go to post, get the time limit message, and then go back and change things, realizing that I've been too hasty in my response.

Can't we make an exception for Si ?

I mean, I'm in no position of authority, but I'm guessing the answer to that would be no.  If Si got some kind of exception, then everyone would be asking for that exception.

Re: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

If someone cam to the forum with the pure intention of spamming, do you think a minute long wait will stop them?

Re: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

It'll give the mods more time to retaliate against the spammers.  Back on Brickfilms, during outbreaks of spamming, there was no limit, and the frantic chases to delete posts and threads was ridiculous for us.

Re: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

What others have said: if you feel the need to post less than a minute apart, it's your fault.

Re: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

I agree with both sides honestly, we sometime only have a few minutes of precious time on the internet sometimes but sometimes a post is quick to respond to, like the first film that comes to kind game. But the limit stops spammers, thiugh we could use to lowere it a little bit. Perhaps have a max number of posts in a certain timeframe?

Can you please change the settings of the really annoying 60 seconds between each post limit. 10 Seconds or 15 would do.

I don't think we can, part of the reason for the 60 second limit is to keep the database from being flooded, which was a problem on the old BF.  As stated in the original request thread.

I'll ask if a slight reduction would be problematic or not, but this combination of hosting and software hasn't always proven to be the most robust so I'd rather err on the side of caution.  In most cases, I suspect it is going to take more than a minute to read a thread and construct a thoughtfully written post in response to what has been said.

Somtimes it does, but if I just posted and someone lese did and I respond, it can be in less than a minute.

What do you mean by "someone lese did and I respond?"  This is part of what I'm talking about, I can't tell what that means due to what is most likely a typo and it's clear a lot of people here don't read their own posts before posting them, so maybe it'd just be better to slow down a little.

edit: Oh, "someone else did," I bet.  I honestly didn't get it, though now it seems fairly obvious.

Re: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

I am against the 60 seconds limit and I am also for it.

On one hand, some people really do suck at writing and they should take longer to think about what they are going to write.

On the other hand, some people are fast typers, and some responses do not require lengthy posts. I can imagine that people who are short on time (as si suggested) would be worst affected by it, for example: If you were at work and you wanted to quickly browse the forum, you wouldn't be able to post anything because you'd have to wait.

Anyway I don't care, I'm happy to keep the 60 seconds if it is making the forum faster because lately its been quite slow sometimes.

Re: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

If you were just quickly dropping in, you could at least post once, I don't understand why somebody would need to post more than three times if they're visiting the site for about 2 minutes.  It's not a chat, it's a forum.  I agree there are some rare circumstances in which it's a minor inconvenience, I'm just not sure it's worth risking the stability of the whole site over something like this.

Re: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

I had 5 minutes to spare, in that time, I posted an offer of help in the Software & Hardware Forum. Added a review on one of the films submissions and commented on someones post within the last lego set they had bought.

All three items were not spam.

If it takes you less than a minute to think up what you're going to post, then it's really not worth saying.

I find that remark offensive. You are basically inferring that we are not capable of eloquent and informative insightful comments in a short space of time.

I am a touch typist at approx 60 words a minute, and I assure you I am more than capable of fast and relevant commentary.

20 to 30 seconds would be more than enough to prevent spammers.

No, but it will help. Brickfilms was recently flooded with spam from bots and it was very hard to keep up with them because there's a very short time limit over there. A minute would certainly have helped a lot, because instead of making 150 topics an hour (or even more than that, maybe) it only would've been able to make 60, which would've really helped the mods out.

I'm in full support of the post timer. If it takes you less than a minute to move from topic to topic and make a well-thought out post, you can surely spare a few seconds to look it over. It won't kill you. I'm sure that if you find yourself with a only a few minutes to post, you'll be able to find time later to post it.

Re: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

I don't know much about the forum software as I don't work with it much but it might be possible to make some kind of filter which prevents people with less then 100 posts from posting more then once every minute and then relaxes the limit to about 25 or 30 seconds for those with over 100 posts?  This would slow down spam bots as they are new users, and the mods should hopefully be able able to stop a spam bot before that.  Maybe it could only allow the post time to be relaxed after 100 posts and one week?

Just some ideas.

Jeez, you're really going to get defensive and personal about this?  He's not saying that at all.  I hate to sound like the bad guy here, but honestly, suck it up and just be patient.

Re: 60 seconds between posts nonsense again!

There are quite a few people here who seem to be incapable of eloquent and insightful comments in any amount of time, let alone 60 seconds.
