Re: OSCARS 2013 - Full list of nominees

I hope Lincoln wins a few categories, Daniel Day-Lewis is absolutely fantastic in it (but then, why wouldn't he be? mini/lol ). One film that I really don't like the look of is Zero Dark Thirty - come on, can the US really get anymore pat-on-the-back patriotic? Oh, wait, yes they can. mini/rolleyes It also portrays torture in a 'justifiable' way to obtain justice, which I feel is plain wrong.

Re: OSCARS 2013 - Full list of nominees

I'm glad Life of Pi was nominated for Best Motion Picture of 2012. I loved that movie. I really gotta go see Lincoln sometime soon, too. I here it's a great movie.

Re: OSCARS 2013 - Full list of nominees

I honestly see no reason how Hans Zimmer can be overlooked for the third time. No nomination for The Dark Knight. Nominated but did not win an oscar for Inception. And not even nominated for The Dark Knight Rises. I'm also sad Moonrise Kingdom hasn't been nominated for the Best Motion Picture, and that I don't see Intouchables, Wreck It Ralph and no other nominations for The Dark Knight Rises on the list. But I hope Lincoln wins something, at least.

Re: OSCARS 2013 - Full list of nominees

I'm pretty pleased with this year's nominees. Alexandre Desplat was nominated for Best Musical Score (for Argo), Lincoln was nominated for quite a lot of categories. But, I'm a little bit bummed that The Hunger Games didn't get into the Best Makeup category.

Two points:
First- have you watched the film? I feel like that would be a prerequisite to complaining about its content.
Second- when did Kathryn Bigelow become "the US"?

Don't get me wrong, from what I've heard ZD30 likely wouldn't appeal to my politics either, but I'm hesitant to criticize a film without watching it first... I'm not Spike Lee, you know?

On another note, do I take it Beasts of the Southern Wild is this year's Winter's Bone (in that I heard absolutely nothing about it until award season)?

I agree, Looper is the best Asian screenplay of the year.

Nolan deserves an Oscar for sure, "Memento" is one of the greatest films I've ever seen (my top 20).

And The Prestige was pretty good too, but Inception is still my favorite Chris Nolan movie.

Third time? You forgot Batman Begins, The Last Samurai and Gladiator.

Those are amazing soundtracks as well of course, but I guess I was listing his recent ones that were all three fantastic. To be honest I don't really know what I was listing. mini/tongue

I'll emphasise "I really don't like the look of..." in my original post. Well, Kathryn Bigelow must be very big to be the US. Her views don't represent all, but the whole film is basically (from the many reviews I've read) reassuring Americans that they are indeed the good heroes and patting them on the back for it, when in reality, it's definitely not that clear cut. That's why I don't really like ZD30, nor do I want to waste my money going to see it.

Re: OSCARS 2013 - Full list of nominees

I'm really sad TDKR got completely snubbed this year, but that doesn't stop me thinking it was the best film of 2012.  Out of the best picture nominees, I hope Argo wins, I absolutely loved the film.

Yes, why have so many people forgotten about the Orientals?  They've got feelings too!

I hate the academy awards, don't follow them, and don't care who wins.  On Oscar night I have an anti-Oscar party and watch robot chicken.

Re: OSCARS 2013 - Full list of nominees

I like the Academy Awards, even if I'm not completely happy with all of the nominations.  It's a night to celebrate films, and films are my third favourite out of all of everything.

And if you don't watch it, then you  seriously miss out on some very funny stuff.

Re: OSCARS 2013 - Full list of nominees

Its a fact of life that winning an Oscar is slowly becoming more and more irrelevant - particularly since the Oscars have a habit of drowning some films with awards, thus completely devaluing the tiny golden statuette ("Oh, you won an Oscar? Well, The Artist won five. Congratulations - now get to the back")

I can't really comment on the nominees since, predictably, hardly any of the nominees are actually out in the UK yet. I didn't see The Master because it was out for like a week in one screen (Argo also came and went with no fanfare), so I can't complain about any parts being forgotten because it could be utter drivel for all I know. The same goes for almost every single nominee.

I will say I'm very happy The Dark Knight Rises got deservedly snubbed. Its as nonsensical as the original 1960's show, only it was pretending to be The Seventh Seal. People who claim Nolan's recent films to be the most intelligent ever desperately need to see more films.

Re: OSCARS 2013 - Full list of nominees

To all those complaining about the nominations: these are just the opinions of a few old people whose opinions don't really reflect the overall quality of the film. I was angry that We Bought a Zoo was not nominated for anything and Jonsi's soundtrack wasn't mentioned either, but then I realized that it doesn't really matter in the long run.

Re: OSCARS 2013 - Full list of nominees

I've noticed lately that the winners of Best Picture are usually either 1) put in cinemas for a limited release, 2) released in other countries before, later, releasing the film in the US, and 3) released over the holiday season. The Hurt Locker, for example was first released in 2008, but wasn't released in the United States until 2009, almost a year later. I would put 4) the film includes an all-star cast and crew (the trailer for Spielberg's Lincoln boasts the fact that Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, and Tommy Lee Jones have all won Academy Awards). But, Life of Pi and Beasts of the Southern Wild, as far as I know, both have no one in the cast that has won an award (not including Ang Lee.

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

I think this decisively ends any discussion (other than guessing which films will win).
