Revenge of the Sith had its moments. Kind of like how literally the only good part of The Phantom Menace was the lightsaber duel (when Brian Blessed or Samuel L Jackson can't redeem the film - you know its bad) . Yes, it was over-choreographed...but that's why I love it. Think about it: What use does the area they duel in have any use for other than to stage an epic duel? What use would a bottomless pit and a corridor filled with ray-shields have in a normal job? Does Naboo have this room reserved just for epic duels?
I've concluded that any moment when no-one talks in the prequel trilogy is great. The problem is that Episodes 1 and 2 are so badly written that there is never any quiet or reflective moments (and if there are, then they are over too quickly to note them). Episode 3 actually takes its time at points. I still find the sequence where Order 66 is carried out very powerful - mostly because George is letting the visuals and John Williams do the talking. In addition, the scene where Anakin and Padme are staring out across the city towards each-over is very powerful - again, because of the music and visuals doing the work. Lucas could have had a long scene with Padme and Anakin talking about what to do next, but he actually made the smart choice of having them both feeling each-overs presence and having a spiritual moment in the sunset. Also, the part where Darth Vader is finally put together and rises from the slab is brilliant...until they start talking and Lucas ruins it all by having Vader yell "NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO", which always makes me burst out laughing.
I actually prefer Episode 2 over Episode 1 because Episode 1 is boring and pointless. Episode 2 has the more painful writing - but its actually relevant to the story arc. Everything established in Episode 1 is re-established in Episode 2 because so much time has passed (though its nice to see that only Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Palpatine have actually aged). Qui-Gon dies, Darth Maul dies, Palpatine becomes Chancellor, Anakin's power is never mentioned again, and the dreaded 'M' word is only mentioned very briefly in Episode 3. Plus, at least they filled Episode 2 with action scenes to keep the kids entertained. Episode 1 just drags on and on and on with nothing actually happening. The plot has nothing to do with anything - its just revolving around this insignificant planet and this insignificant federation. The government and the Jedi council are absolutely useless - with Yoda just sitting around barking "HE IS TOO OLD!" and Samuel L Jackson acting as though he's been pumped with tranquillisers (WORST. CASTING DECISION. EVER)
But, this is all irrelevant now we have another load of films coming out. I'm hoping Disney will look online and see how people are reacting to the prospect of more films and think "You know, maybe we should just keep churning out the toys and let the films die". But they wont.
Damn capitalism....
