Topic: Environment Blending

I recently developed a way to do Lego mouth movements in Adobe After Effects that looks pretty good, but it doesn't really blend with its environment.  It just looks like a black blob on the figure's mouth expanding and shrinking.  I guess it could be considered "good enough", but I'm a perfectionist.  Any suggestions for making it react with its environment?

Re: Environment Blending

Change the blending mode.  Try Multiply or Overlay.  Add some blur if it's out of focus.

Oh, yeah!  I kinda figured out the focus part, but I didn't even think of changing the blending mode!  Thanks!  mini/smile

Re: Environment Blending

Depending on the lighting situation you may want to ajust the colours of the black blob

I just need three more actors for my new film, check the casting call here.

Re: Environment Blending

I usually put my mouth layer at about 90% opacity and never set the color to perfect black. Use another black part of the shot or the minifig as a reference for what black should look like. Also, AE has a neat effect called Roughen Edges that I use to give some texture to the edges of the mouth mask. If that's not necessary I just adjust the mask feather.

Just colour correct to the colour of the eyes.
