Topic: Advertisements on the website.

Sorry about posting another thread, it's just I had an idea that I thought I'd share.

To put it simply, I've noticed that when on this site, I've never seen any adverts at all. (if there are in fact adverts, and I'm just not seeing them as I'm currently on my phone, then feel free to remove this post) Now, normally I hate adverts with a passion, but my idea was, that if the site could find a long term sponsor, perhaps we could all benefit. For example, if there were just one or two adverts on the right hand side, that interfere with nothing really (many sites do this) then the community could obviously earn a constant income. The reason I say this, is because for each competition we host, we often have to find a sponsor for the event. However, if we had a permanent sponsor perhaps if would give the opportunity to offer larger prizes as rewards.

I'm terrible at explaining so I'm sorry. Basically, say for example Bricklink sponsors a competition. They may provide a prize of a voucher for perhaps £20/$35 etc. They offer this amount as the time they get for advertisement depends entirely on the popularity of the contest. However, if we had a permanent sponsor, bringing in perhaps £50 a month (random number - this site's quite popular though and gets quite a few hits) then maybe that could all go into a 'prize pot'.
Basically, it would give the opportunity for the site to hold more competitions and offer better prizes. Just imagine if the prize for a competition was worth the equivalent of £100+ - the interest in the competition would go through the roof.

Again, this is just a suggestion, whether it's a good one or not is yet to be seen. What do you all think? (as I say, if there are alread adverts and I've just made myself seem stupid as I can't see them, ignore this)

Re: Advertisements on the website.

I personally wouldn't mind adverts if it led to possibly better/competitions.

Re: Advertisements on the website.

There are advertisements on the site, however, they are just basic Google Ads. Members have the benefit of not seeing the advertisements while logged in.

Re: Advertisements on the website.

Some people are a bit touchy about ads because the people who bought Brickfilms.com back in the day and destroyed it began by plastering the site with ads.

That said, I'd still be cool with this if we had advertising space valuable enough that somebody would buy it for £50 a month. I don't really wanna go into details in public but based on our general numbers I don't think we'd be able to sell advertising to a particular sponsor at a rate that would make it worth our trouble or theirs, at present. For now though, I do want to tweak the use of Google ads here when I have some time, just haven't been able to do so yet.

Yeah, that was just a random number. But I reckon it would be great if you could get money coming in going towards a 'prize pot'. It would be great for competitions.

I as an ordinary member wouldn't mind seeing google ads on this site as long as it helps for the site and community. mini/wink

Relevant ads.

Re: Advertisements on the website.

Whatever floats your boat guys!

Re: Advertisements on the website.

A few ads selling legos or toys or cameras wouldn't be a problem. I honestly wouldn't care if they're were Audi ads on the site.

Re: Advertisements on the website.

I've got a banner at the top with three AdChoice ads in them, while logged in. Is this new?

Yes.

It's a little annoying to be the first thing we see...

Re: Advertisements on the website.

Is there a way to put it on the bottom instead of the top? It's not that annoying but I guess more people would be satisfied if it was down on the bottom of the site.

I must agree.

Re: Advertisements on the website.

I saw that too, and if it means more money for the site I don't really care where it is.
Although I prefer how this is done with the ads off to the side. They then don't get in your way when you're reading down the page.

Well yeah, about the adverts...
Seems like I'm dating asians tonight! See ya.

Re: Advertisements on the website.

I don't like the new ad banner that much, either.

I seems like there's supposed to be one at the bottom, but what comes up for me is part of a "The webpage cannot be found" page.

Not literally dead, just no longer interested in Lego or animation.

Re: Advertisements on the website.

It's definitely an experiment. We've had problems with integrating ads into other parts of the page. I'd also point out that this ad is in the number one hot spot for ad placement. Like, seriously, you get probably 10 times as much revenue putting an add there as you would putting it at the bottom of the page.

I would like to optimize the advertisement targeting so we get ads with better relevance. I haven't had time to look into that lately.

At the risk of sounding like an awful admin or something, it's sort of about how much advertising I can shove down your throats without it significantly affecting your decisions about whether or not to use the site. I don't think anybody actually likes website ads, but ones that go unnoticed aren't worth having. I do care about aesthetics and providing a quality user experience, but it'd also be cool not to lose money on the site and have it be more financially self-sufficient than it is right now.

Re: Advertisements on the website.

Well it's taking up quite a bit of real estate.  Think you can flatten it a bit.  1 line of ad instead of 3.  Even if you have to spread them out, top bottom, side (way off to the side mini/tongue )
