[BRAWL 2011] The Job Offer

YouTube

A man desperately in need of a job chooses an unlikely offer as a spy. Hiding from sight, he must carefully gather information on an unusual victim.

Made for BRAWL 2011, hosted on bricksinmotion.com! I worked all week on this project, scripting, animating, and editing. It's by far my best work and I'm overjoyed by how it turned out.

Special thanks to: My Family, Jonathan Williams (Jstudios), Jonathan Phillips (Just Kidden), Stan the Lego man, DW|Storm, Animartian Studios, and most of all to Golithan for hosting the contest.

Haha, this was great. Loved it Onion, nice job.

Re: [BRAWL 2011] The Job Offer

liked this alot, except for some yelling. There's too much yelling in brickfilms, I'm not sure if this is just me, but I don't find people yelling particularely funny. The animation was great, and the sets were very impressive, though the warm colours don't feel right, I think, but that's just a nitpick. Nice. 4/5

haha
the flow lagged a bit every now and then, but other than that, it was excellent!  great work!

Re: [BRAWL 2011] The Job Offer

To be honest, I felt that it dragged on a little too long. Random brickfilms aren't bad (Even though I don't usually prefer them), but this seemed a little too random, and I didn't know what was going on half of the time. The animation was good, but it could have benefited from some easing (It looks like you eased for a lot of the animation, but at times it looked choppy). The voices were solid, though, and it was beautifully shot. Overall, your best work yet!

3.8/5.

I thank you very much for this review, as it sums up my feelings on it. The yelling was over the top, and that was mainly because of myself. All the voice actors supplied me with numerous variations of the lines I asked for, and I chose more then once the one in which they yelled. I did consider changing it, but when it came to 11:30, I decided there wasn't enough time.

I, to be honest, find this comment very disheartening. While I understand a lot of the criticism given, I feel this isn't true. Everyone who's seen this so far has understood it, so I'm unsure why you didn't. James got a job as a spy, he spied, and then his boss and himself go to confront the man he's been spying on. Whilst writing I thought the idea was too simple.

The easing fairly understandable, although there were only a few scenes where this was apparent. Although the worst thing for me is your comment "Your best work yet"... why? Because of your rating. You gave my previous film, "Runway", 5/5, and you said it wasn't flawed almost at all, yet this, in my opinion, is a great deal better.

Maybe I'm just sorry to hear that something I have put many hours of work into is lacking, I don't know. Thanks for your input anyway.

I liked it, the animation was nice though i think it was a bit too over the top at times and was just random. The voiceacting for the most was pretty good except the yelling as others have stated. I enjoyed it though, especially

Spoiler (click to read)

the lighting speed animation at the end which was excellent.

So whilst I understand criticism, and your reviews are usually very good, this is untruthful.

I didn't really understand the beginning much at all, I had just figured out he was a spy once he was already inside the subject's house for a while. I understood the ending, but to me, it just looked rushed.

Also, I was unaware that I (It may have not been me. Remember, there are three of us) rated Runway a 5/5. If I did rate it, I apologize for the confusion I caused. And lastly, I don't see how my comment is untruthful. I mainly just gave my opinions on the film instead of saying something like "You tried to do it this way, but you did it wrong...".

I hope the comment I wrote above doesn't seem like I'm attacking you, that is most certainly not my intention.

Wow. The voice of that evil receptionist person was the best voice actor I have ever heard, who was that? mini/tongue
Jokes aside, I'm really pleased with how this came out, great jjob Onion, can't wait to see more from you.

Re: [BRAWL 2011] The Job Offer

Mmm... I don't think this quite lived up to my expectations based off of your other films. It seems rather like a project in which you have over exerted yourself trying to complete this longer-than-usual film in a one-week time frame whilst spending too much time chatting with other brickfilmers about all kinds of random nonsense. xD

This, however, is understandable, as moving to longer projects can be harder to do, especially in a short amount of time.

Though, whilst it doesn't live up to my expectations, it did live up to about 96% of it, which still pretty great.

Hehe

The best thing in this movie is your set design, which just blows all of your other set designs away. I especially liked the path to the house, how it used varying colors, and you put it on the same level as the grass instead of being lazy and putting it in top of it, very, very clever. I'll probably use that some day. The house was also very nicely done, and I liked many of the little details very much such as the silver cup, the book shelf, and other things.

Your animation also has improved nicely.
And the whole idea of the story was very great, just some guy applies for a job, then that other guy is like "HEY DUDE WANNA BE A SPY" And then he's a spy. xD That's comic genius. Along with the whole coffee thing.
mini/lol

As for voice acting, I love crazy over-the-top screaming a whole lot. xD It's awesome. But what I don't like is when it just messes up because of the microphone and it just hurts your ears. Particularly when Just Kidden yelled and such, his mic isn't the best, he can't help it, I guess, but this had me messing with the volume trying to adjust it so I could hear everything without hurting my ears. Properly, when watching a film, you should be able to find just the right volume and be able to leave it there throughout the movie without any need to change it. I think you could've altered the levels of a few voices, sounds, and music to make them better. But it's understandable for a BRAWL film. I was completely unable to understand the guy with the red beard.

Just Kidden please, read this. (or anyone who voice acts and screams)
When you record screaming, or rather loud yelling, you should keep your face far enough from your mic as so the scream can be recorded properly without that bothersome loud fuzziness which happens when microphones are overloaded with loud noises. When I record, I usually keep myself about a foot away, more or less depending on the line, then I'll probably edit it in post production to make sure the volume is just right and flows with the rest of the film. Sometimes I'll shout and move to three or two feet away, and then there are some especially extreme circumstances. A good example would be a line in "MAILBOX OF DOOM!" where that one guy (Wilson the Window Man) ran into town screaming at the top of his lungs then announced that a giant mailbox was coming to eat them all. Remember that? If not, go watch it again, enjoy the awesomeness of my movies (haha sorry xD), anyway, whilst recording that line, I got out of my chair, and walked somewhere around seven feet away from my mic, then screamed as loud as I could. Thus recording a good scream without causing that annoying fuzzy noise.

Actually, I'm quite aware of my awful mic quality. mini/tongue Also, I do everything you mention, it's just that my noisy computer fan and my awful microphone just ruin it.
I don't have much money to go buy a new microphone, either. But trust me, as soon as I have the chance I'll go out and get a new mic.

Re: [BRAWL 2011] The Job Offer

This contest had an amazing turnout! I love every film I've seen so far. My favorite part of this film was the sheep (mainly because that was the only part I understood. I swear, you're trying to be like JK.)

Re: [BRAWL 2011] The Job Offer

That's the sad part. JK is original in animation and story, but when people try to copy him, his own films get boring. Just like FF101. Everyone has they're own personality, make that shine in your films. Don't copy others, it's cheap and stupid. Great film though, Onion.

I wouldn't say it's a bad thing. xD I like the style, it's nice to see it more. (as long as it's done well)

Anyway, ON TOPIC. Fantastic film, love the ending camera angle and the sheep part. Although the pacing slowed down a bit when the guy was actually spying on him.
