Re: Progress on next film: Operation Blue Dragon

Very cool. I can't wait either. I like the control room. Especially the pit area.

And another one to keep you guys warmed up mini/lol

Blue League Briefing Room. Shot was slightly different (other seating arrangements, "scared face" isn't visible in the actual shot of course) and have to make another set to shoot from the viewpoint of the commander doing the presentation. I'll let you guys take a guess at what the objects left and right of the commander are...

You are NOT allowed to do any more guesses. And yes, you're right!
(Which is also a sign that I got the design right, if someone recognizes it first guess...)

This film is nowhere near being finished...

BTW, concerning the opening of the hatch: first it opens a little and at that point I intend to add an effect of escaping gas around the sides of the hatch. That's why it opens in two movements.

And... the walking Mecha which I posted earlier will also be a part of this film...

I like how it goes up-and-down!!!

Re: Progress on next film: Operation Blue Dragon

How far have you got, this looks like it will be good?

Well, I have several updates for the interested:
- The script is approaching a more or less "final version". And is about 16 pages of text... The first parts, on which I started production, were already finished, but I'm still not really satisfied with the ending.
- I did some more tests with the Mecha which I planned to used, but came to the conclusion that the "clicked joints" which come with most of the exoforce sets are simply not suitable for animation. These joints move in fixed intervals (clicks) and cannot move in smaller increments.  That makes the animation look very clunky. so instead of the exo-force two-legged frame, I will use a technic frame with 4 legs. Although that will still be very hard to animate I'm convinced that it will look much better. Maybe I'll post a test with just the frame moving (I will need to practice with that anyway...)
- Casting call will not be up for a long time. I'll finish the animation first so people can "fit" their lines to the actual footage.

Keep you guys posted!

Once you finally need that, I'll probably be a good pick for that, I have a lot of experience with that type of acting. Plus a load of voices I can make.

Re: Progress on next film: Operation Blue Dragon

yeah, i too can voice act (if any characters fit my voice)

i will gladly help out anyway i can. mini/smile i have some time on my hands mini/tongue

Re: Progress on next film: Operation Blue Dragon

Is there a particular reason you're animating before you record? It tends to come out a lot more natural when the performance is what the animation is based on, rather than vice versa.

Probably because I'm a bit ... Errrm... "impatient". Once I got an idea for a scène in my head I really can't wait to start animating, even though the script isn't fully finished yet. I "speak" the lines myself to get a feeling for timing, and I animate that. For this script I'll probably supply selected voice actors with the actual footage so they can fit their  lines. Maybe I'll even supply lines spoken by me as well...

Isn't this how they do it in the big Disney / Pixar productions? Not suggesting that I'm comparing myself to these guys, but the it's the same principle, isn't it?

We'll just see how this works out. I'm not too worried about this...

Edit, off topic: Jargon has succumbed to the pony craze! We're doomed!

Re: Progress on next film: Operation Blue Dragon

I do the same thing Boardron does due to the fact that a lot of times I don't know what will be said until I actually animate the scene. I like Improvisation, I have no script usually.
But I find out exactly how many frames the lines needs to be right before animating it, that way I can easily fit it.

So far, most of my films have turned out pretty nicely and people have been very pleased with the voices dispite the fact that I do this.
mini/smile

Though, I'm actually going to try out a little bit of the usual way in my next film, already have some lines from Stan which I'm going to try to fit.

Re: Progress on next film: Operation Blue Dragon

I do it the same way ANP and boardron do. I chop up a line into parts, like at periods or commas or just dividing the sentence in half of thirds. After I animate the talking movements, I add pauses. I say the line out loud to make sure it fits. In the beginning of Bricks: Episode 1, I said the lines too fast and had trouble fitting it in at parts. Now, I say the line at normal speed to make sure that the animation will fit the actor's lines.

I don't do it the other way because it's a pain to try and figure out the timing beforehand, especially with an audio clip. I might do that if I'm making a music video or something, but I try to avoid figuring timing out beforehand as much as possible.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who does it this way.

Not literally dead, just no longer interested in Lego or animation.

Dialog is recorded before animation. Sound effects and anything that needs tweaking will be put in afterward. This is most notable in a few Animaniacs and Pinky & The Brain episodes where dialog was recorded, animated, and then changed or removed, leading to some irregularities between the lip-syncing and the spoken dialog.

Re: Progress on next film: Operation Blue Dragon

Well, since it doesn't involve lip syncing, it's not really a must for brickfilming. I can understand that it would nearly be impossible for other types of stop motion though.
