Topic: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

While many brickfilms these days have other issues beyond romantic elements, such as concept and plot, I still can't help but wonder if there should be more "romantic" brickfilms.

While we are talking about plastic lego men here, rest assured I do mean lighthearted romance...nothing that you wouldn't see in a PG or low-ended PG-13 rated film. And of course I suppose romantic comedies would work better in this medium. But even so, do you think a decently "serious" romance, meaning not comedic, could work well in a type of brickfilm? Why or why not? Do you think there should be more brickfilms that, don't only have a decent plot and concept, but also a decent amount of romance? Do you feel that romance could add more profundity to a brickfilm, or do you feel it just wouldn't work out no matter what?

State your opinion on this matter, and discuss. Feel free to add more than what this thread asks, or, feel free not to answer any of the questions and just post what you think in general. The idea was just to get some brain juices flowing, after all.

I think it's a topic worth discussing, but please do not take it the wrong way. I am not suggesting every new brickfilm should have romance, I am only suggesting there should perhaps be more ambition in today's brickfilms. More ambition to do more, and to go that "extra mile" while making a film of any kind.

It'd be hard to do, seeing, as you said, as they're plastic toys people will find it hard to take it seriously and not get bored. I think it could only appeal if if was pulled off like a work of art.

Good alternative to a love topic. mini/wink I for one am all in favour of more romance, but as you put, in a light-hearted fashion. Certainly Filmyguy's Valentine's day specials (1 and 2) were some of my most favourite brickfilms to date, and with some slapstick humor involved make for some funny films. At the same time it might be nice to see some more heartfelt animations, which while staying towards the more fun an cartoony side, could also have some nice moments.

That's my thoughts anyway.

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

It could work if the creator succeeds in making the audience care for the characters, which is hard to do in short films, and even more harder in brickfilms.

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

'Lighthearted Romance' makes me immediately think of 'Romantic Comedy' - the most formulaic film genre of all time (more so that the slasher and disaster movie IMO). It would be interesting to see someone attempt a serious Romance, like 'Cassablanca', 'Cleopatra', or some of the old Rita Hayworth Movies. I suppose it could work in that way, but 'lighthearted' may be too bland and formulaic....

A serious romance would have to be very stylistic, to make the mix of plastic and love seem fitting.

If a brickfilm like Frankenstein could horrify kids at a film festival, I'm sure a serious romance brickfilm will work too.

I think it will be nice with a romance film for once.

I was actually thinking to make a romance film to the Septemberfest, but I didn't because I thought it would be... embarrassing mini/XD
But I think it is a good idea with a comedic romance film, too.

Expect a brickfilm with a theme of love form me in the next two years. mini/tongue

Seriously, I've had an idea rattling around in my head for a while.

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

Try Doug Vandegrift's film 'Pirates!'. It has a fair bit of romance.

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

I agree with Timothy_R and Vik.

You'd have to make the audience care about the characters in order for romance to work in a brickfilm. That's hard to do in live action, and even harder to do in a LEGO film.

However, plastic man or not, I think if you could create likable characters that people could relate to in some way, romance might have a chance. You have to make the viewer want these two people to be together. It would also be good to show their love in some way...beyond the man buying flowers or something for example. And I don't mean kissing or anything either...but there has to be a certain feeling to the film where them being together seems and feels right, and it has to be clear they are in love.

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

There is a little bit of romance in my up coming BiM 2011 entry.

Though it doesn't focus so much on the actual romance, while it rather focuses on what the guy does to impress the girl.

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

Romance is hard to pull off in a brickfilm, since your working with plastic. However I would love to see some one pull it off. (no pun intended)

Romance in brickfilms? It works if done right. However you have to be quite a good writer to make a relationship between two plastic figures meaningful.

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

I think it'd be hard to take seriously if it takes itself seriously, because they're LEGO minifigs.

That said I've had an idea for a brickfilm story that involves romance; I'm not totally opposed to the idea of it and at the very least it'd be nice to see more significant female characters in brickfilms.

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

I'd love to see this, but the biggest problem I can see is there's no real way to make minifigs kiss.

The only problem with this, is that it's hard to find good female voice actresses allot of times.

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

Guys, guys, guys. Ever heard of True Love Waits?
On a less silly note, I really liked Legoander's romance-oriented THAC8 entry, Love's Labour

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

Voice actors are no problem for me, I prefer the silent type of films that tell the story through actions.

Re: Should there be more Romance in today's Brickfilms?

I've been thinking about the same thing. I have some ideas for romances, but I have way to many tings I'm making at the moment.
But I think romance COULD be done. For the most part, I hate romance movies, they just all seem unoriginal and dull. There are, however, a few exceptions, such as Wall-E, which is a romance with robots. And if one could do a fantastic romance with robots, which aren't humans, I think you could do it with LEGO as well. mini/smile
